As a professional violinist who has played plenty of Paganini and dabbled in Ernst, I can say that I have not been this dumbfounded since I heard Last Rose of Summer for the first time. This is something different even than that though. I may just be ignorant but I don't know anybody who's stretched the instrument like this since Ernst-- so in the last 150 years. I feel like the what's possible on the violin is suddenly different. I can't even feel bad about my own playing because of how in awe I am. Unreal.
Ground breaking work. Listened to this probably 10 times now. Feels like watching history being made. The use of harmonics for huge chords is amazing. Bravo
Sounds like sul ponticello, but the footage does zoom in and he's not actually playing on the bridge. Similar timbre to the viola solo near the beginning of Janáček's 2nd string quartet.

I think roman Kim gives all of us the experience of watching paganini alive playing for us. Imagine this kind of sick talent playing in the 1700', now all the legends about He selling his soul for talent make sense. In the minds of those people this kind of playing was something impossible, and the only way to make it something comprehensible was attributed it to the devil. Im so happy to be alive in the same era of Roman and be able to watch this kind of videos. Making the impossible , possible. MAESTRO!!!
In Roman's video titled "ROMY KING plays HIGHWAY STAR of DEEP PURPLE [Violin Solo]" there's a comment thread that has his replies explaining about his fingerboard with those fret like bumps. Original comment is from Roman himself "Thank you guys!!!" One person asked in the replies "What's that fingerboard?" and he replied "Fingerboard i developed myself .I make many experiments on violin)" and then 2 people asked "It looks very interesting! Can you explain the benefits of these little fret-like bumps? I would like to try that fingerboard!" and "What does that fingerboard does?" and he replied "make sound much more precise. it gives many things-i cant explain, but you can understand when you try this.but you must to play violin a bit different way-fingers must be putted much more flat for example" and "maybe) but you know i play with this things something like 1 year. . .that is experiment.i can play precise on violin without,i played whole my life on normal violin-hear my earlier videos. but about precise i mean in a big hall. you can hear difference in big hall. about microfone-maybe more,i dont know)" So I guess it makes sense to be using that kind of fingerboard to play these out of this world chords. Absolutely mind blowing!

The use of the thumb, flageolet voicing and the measured tremolo are simply stunning. I've never heard anything close to this good with all of these techniques being used.

Mind blowing arrangement and playing! Those hybrid bow waving double stops, with legato on one string and flying stacatto on the other, might just be an actual first in violin technique; not something one sees every day (or century). Thank you, Roman. You made my day significantly better.
Roman Kim is completely next level, but that technique has been around since the eighteenth century! I don't know the violin rep as well but there's a couple of cello etudes by Duport that use it.
Holy crap what was that hand position at 3:10??!!!!!!!!! You have changed is all forever Roman! I’m a cellist and I’ve only known thumb positions on cello but I never knew that such things could happen on violin!!!!!!
"We told you to bring an orchestra!" - (*Coughs in Roman Kim*)Yes, and I did. I believe now I know how people felt when they saw paganini playing. It's hard to believe that someone is actually playing that on one violin.
It's not just the technique. It's the legitimate realization of the parts that Beethoven wrote. It's simply fabulous artistry of the violin and arranger and reverse orchestrator rolled into one. I think Beethoven would be proud. He knew a kindred spirit when he found one..the people who broke through all the boundaries to do something different. "Art must not stand still"

Some day in the future this piece will be a audition requirement for the Juilliard entrance exam. I am lucky for I will die before that time. This piece is by far the most difficult piece ever for the violin.
At the first listening you are astonished, at the second you get excited because you observe a moment of evolution, at the third listening you enjoy the music. The more I listen the more I like it.
First of all, amazing techniques as always. I'm guessing even Roman needs those "fret bumps" I see on the fingerboard to help with the intonation on all the crazy chords?
@@ryancantpvp no, fingerboard grooves run parallel to the strings and are usually limited to the first position area. The violinist will get the fingerboard planed when the grooves become too deep because they hinder intonation. These appear to be actual frets, running perpendicular to the strings.
He talked about them, he likes to experiment a lot on his violin, I think he said it gives a different, fuller, richer sound to the violin, specially on big halls, he also hand makes his own violin strings, and his iconic prismatic lenses which claims to alter his perception of time and give him more control on his playing, also experiments with his bows as well

Why is Roman Kim not insanely famous ? It is simple -- he is absolutely unique, and has gone far beyond the range and scope of a normal concert violinist. People without musical discrimination (or ones filled with jealousy) work behind the scenes to discredit him or play down his accomplishments. And who knows, he may well be high functioning Aspergers and doesn't know how to (or care to) play the political scene you have to play to get the most elite doors opened. It is disgusting -- far more people deserve to hear his genius. Truly one of a kind.
He is by far the best violinist of all time. Double stops with harmonics on one string and regular notes on the other, while throwing in left hand pizz? Come on.
Nope. Not even close.
@jack burgess2 Thank you for your thoughtful response. When you get a chance, there's a cleanup on aisle 4.
he might aswell be making coffee in the next room and we just don't know it!

In some cases, perhaps.
In others it is just proof of listening to violinists who are better.
Not gonna lie, I'm here because of Twoset Violin's video. Someone in the comments was like, "If you think this (his Mozart video) is something, you should see him do Beethoven 5." And now, I see why they said that. He graduated from being a string quartet to being an entire freaking orchestra. 😵💫

i watched twosetviolin vid too but i watched eine kleine nachtumusik roman kim first
seriously my left wrist cramped solely from watching this!😭
I'm Wondering how all of this started, maybe their string quarter mates, never arrived and he had to take the entire class alonee and maybe this is how he said this won't happen to me againg and start practicing in a whole differente new level
Bro even his harmonics sound like flutes! This is beyond mind blowing
The violin is fretted, i guess that makes harmonics easier
@@dang5874 nope, that's a new type of harmonics that Roman developed he refers to as 'forced' they are very flexible compared to standard harmonics and foundational to his multi-voice interpretations m.th-cam.com/video/gQhQ06kXt0g/w-d-xo.html
he developed and played them even when he used to play standard unmodified $ multi-million 1695 Guarneri over a decade ago, he gave it up because he wanted to experiment violin design and modifications and in the process of that work this is his final instrument that's much louder than a standard violin and has wider dynamic tonal range, oh and it has no frets but has scallops on the fingerboard
@@LogioTek I see, thanks for the info!
Blown away. Speechless.
Just when you think there can't be any new innovations in what a violinist can do without being dorky, in comes roman and blows it out of the water.
I still think you're Paganini reincarnated.
Thank you!!!!
None of Paganini pieces are as hard as this.
@@망히-z9z He means Kim is innovative like Paganini
Now I am curious about the "dorky" type of innovations you have encountered.
So now the thumb it’s an actual playable finger and I guess that scales, exercises or etudes would need to be developed from now.
In more than 20 years as a classical violinist, I’ve never seen such an extended use of the thumb in full use. This is totally unbelievable 🙇🏻♂️
He does it a few times on Air on the G String for solo violin, and Eine Kleine Nachtmusik for solo violin, but this here, he uses it a looot, it's unbelievable!
I guess the frets help a lot, especially when he uses his thumb.
@@Yakumo00o I thought the violin is a fret-less instrument. Did he add frets on his fingerboard? I do see what appear to be horizontal markings.but not sure if that’s the same as frets
@@MustafaAlmosawi indeed, violin is a fret-less instrument and for e.g. glissando you need a fret-less fingerboard, but there are also some violins with frets, especially electric violins. For me it looks like he added frets on his fingerboard
So does the violin in this video actually has frets?? Like you can definitely see lines, but it’s hard to say if they are 2-D or 3-D.
I dont know if anybody else has noticed a slightly hidden technique Kim employs, which is the addition of his thumb to the regular four-finger system. The fact that he actually practices it and proves its feasibility is really jaw-dropping(I say this because I once had the same thought of using my thumb, but since it’s so unconventional, as a consequence, I never thought it’s even possible😅)
I have not seen that before, thats amazing.
Yes, I noticed it. He is playing with 5 fingers, for the first time in the violin history.

Absolutely mind-blowing. It's very rare to see such a case in which a virtuoso impresses as much by his technical abilities as by his musical understanding, respect for the work, seriousness of approach, care for details, aesthetic consistency and innovative ideas. Wow!
I feel like the violin hasn't been stretched to new limits in such a profound way since Paganini. It's like I'm watching history happen. Unreal.

From the comments you can see why he is not a resounding success, there is a lot of envy. And the more one knows about music, the more this feeling grows against the most talented violinist of this century. I, and every human being alive, have not seen Paganini play, but this lad beats them all by a wide difference in talent and makes me proud to have seen Kim perform such a marvel.
Perhaps, but how does that explain why Jacob Collier is such a sensation?
Simply the best violinist alive to date, and potentially the best to ever pick up a violin. He would definitely give Paganini a run for his money.
Perlman is still alive though. Roman is likely top 5 though
@@pulsar2049 At the top the only difference between the 'greats' so to speak is playing style but all of them can play anything even if there aren't recordings for us to see.

Kim's Violin: GOD PLEASE SAVE ME!

Violin: "THAT'S NOT WHAT I MEANT!"
I would like to try that fingerboard!" and "What does that fingerboard does?" and he replied "make sound much more precise. it gives many things-i cant explain, but you can understand when you try this.but you must to play violin a bit different way-fingers must be putted much more flat for example" and "maybe) but you know i play with this things something like 1 year. . .that is experiment.i can play precise on violin without,i played whole my life on normal violin-hear my earlier videos. but about precise i mean in a big hall. you can hear difference in big hall. about microfone-maybe more,i dont know)"
So I guess it makes sense to be using that kind of fingerboard to play these out of this world chords. Absolutely mind blowing!

First of all, amazing techniques as always. I'm guessing even Roman needs those "fret bumps" I see on the fingerboard to help with the intonation on all the crazy chords?
I heard that those bumps come from practicing so much. A normal violinist has a few but Roman is so insane that he has it across his whole fingerboard
@@ryancantpvp no, fingerboard grooves run parallel to the strings and are usually limited to the first position area. The violinist will get the fingerboard planed when the grooves become too deep because they hinder intonation. These appear to be actual frets, running perpendicular to the strings.
