    I built one of those many years ago. 3/4” plywood edged with decking boards. It’s not light but has stood up to a lot of heavy use and is still going strong.

      My first WorkMate was an old frame without a top.
      I was able to use chip board with oak edging. That was over 30 years ago and still working fine. 😀😎

    Hey Dave - nice thing you built: zero cost (elbow grease), easy to store, and it transforms your workmate into a bench...mighty useful when you need it. It's always good to be able to have multiple uses out of one piece of shop furniture. 🙂

      Having easily stored work surfaces is great. Being able to clamp things to them makes them even better.

      A little project to make our other projects work better. It is a fun and easy addition. 😀
      Lydia just had her first rehab session on her arm.
      Some excersize and a massage has her feeling much better. 😀😎

    I know what I’m building next. Sometimes something simple is a great idea. Thanks!

      Workmates are inexpensive and versatile.
      When I didn't have a shop I had to make do with whatever space I had. The folding WorkMate let me reuse the small space for multiple tasks.

    This is a nice tip that didn't occur to me. I have a workmate 425, and sometimes it's really nice to have a portable work bench you can move around. Very simple to make; I'll try it.

      @@patjohnson3100 It keeps from chewing up the bench top. If it does get chewed up then you can flip it once or toss and replace.

      Yes, you are correct. It will save the bench top. Another reason to use it.@@OldSneelock

    How's she goin'? I like these kind of hacks. You have this and that and by using a little common sense and practical thinking you can make yourself a nice addition to the shop! Take 'er easy!!

    I had an old Workmate from the early 80’s that I used a lot and I got remarried in 2016. My husband appropriated it for his use and I found one advertised for $20 that was a bit newer that I planned to use in the back yard for projects as we are on a steep hill. I saw that they didn’t have the dogs in it but it was in good shape and had no rust. I brought it home and my husband checked it out and realized that the dogs were placed underneath so it was complete. Unfortunately, he also commandeered that on for the garage but does use both of them. My old saw horses are what I keep out back. Not as useful, but still handy. I am sharing this with my husband. I’m searching for another Workmate…

      I don't know where you live but I have seen 3 of them so far at the Restore and two garage sales.

      The originals were built tough.
      Dad gave me a die cast aluminum framed WorkMate back when Lydia and I got married. I still have it. 😀😎

    Never hurts to have a topper for a work table. I have a custom made topper for my rubbermaid cart with a hole in the center that I can plug. That hole makes the inner part a trash can or pit basically. When you need to adapt you can always make something. I sure hope your son got the handy Gene from you if not never to late to learn. I'm that person who will be right over to fix something or help someone out like the neighbor dad of old. I can still tie fence wire almost blindfolded because of my grandpa. There's something to be Said about a man a teacher that couldn't write but chicken scratch but could eyeball a measurement without touch a tool and was about spot on every time.

      Ryan took the basic idea of Sneelock and formalized it with a college education that his old man told him was much easier than the OTJ plan.
      I got there but it took a lot longer.

      Glad you are ready with the paint. We are at rehab for Lydia's arm.

    I made a top for my workmate using 3/4 in plywood routed in the middle to recieve a 3/8 in thick pvc panel to hole my router and jig saw I can lift inset out to chnge bits or blades I built an L shaped bracket to hold it alongg
    table top ans a clamp on the opposite side. I also built a flat panel as you did that adds another work space because I have often had many projects running at the same time.I will be interested to see what else you come up with nice work!

      Nice idea for a router/jig saw table.
      Workmates are like a Leatherman Knife for the workshop.

    If you want a topper to last a lifetime on my workmate knockoff the chipboard rotted away but I fixed that. I took hardwood pallet boards (you can do this to plywood as well) literally poured the old chucky stain you know you have in your basement on it. That old can of minwax even partially cured will be like you put formica on it never gonna hurt it even water. Just dump the entire can and spread it out. A material we use also on our cutting tables or even workbenches here is frp (fiberglass reinforced plastic) it's the stuff you see on restaurant or hospital walls that has texture. There's almost no way to paint it grease solvents won't eat it and it's almost immune to utilty knives. Ever need to bulletproof a surface frp is a great way.

      Fiber Reinforced Plastic sounds like a great idea.

    What a great idea, thanks for sharing. I'm going to build one for my workmate. So the bottom piece is an inch or two narrower than full open on the workmate?

    • @OldSneelock
      @OldSneelock  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      About an inch or so. The wider the vise is set for the better the table is supported. 😀😎

    Is Old Sneelocks Workshop actually
    a New Square Tube Metal Building ?

    • @OldSneelock
      @OldSneelock  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The building in the thumbnail is my old shop by Union City, MI.
      The Versa Tube metal building this video was made in is my new shop that I call the Annex after a joke we started about 6 years ago.
