Steve, I'm not a woodworker, but I subscribed to you years ago because I just loved your videos. This past week has been very difficult and stressful for me, and in that time you've made two videos, and I've watched a bunch of your old ones. And every single one made me laugh. Whether it was you being intentionally funny or just something simple (like not wearing shoes in your wood shop), it's put a smile on my face and made life just a little brighter. On the router bit issue, a 1/2" bit will be more stable and have less vibration and deflection. On the drill press, don't tighten the chuck in just one spot. There are 3 "grabby things" and 3 holes for the chuck key. Tighten all 3 of them to help get the bit centered in the chuck.
The close-up opening you did last week reminds me of Wilson Wilson from the show "Home Improvement". You should do an impression sometime if you are familiar!
I noticed maple plywood at my local Home Depot but haven't used it yet. Still waiting for a good simple project to use it with.
I have a scroll saw with a rusted base plate so what do I do to fix it

OT low end tablesaws, I just got a DeWalt DW745 and love most things about it so far, would love it even more if I could have gotten it at US prices $-) except I'd probably then have gotten a 744 which has a bit more power. Best thing about it is that rack-and-pinion fence. Plus it is relatively easy to adjust basically everything, so even if something's out of square, with a good square and a little patience you can definitely GET it square. Also DeWalt has already launched a successor (DW7480?) so there might still be a chance to grab a bargain somewhere.

Thanks for waiting!!! I paused the video and glued up door panel number 17 of 21 for my kitchen cupboard door project! after the video ends i will scrape the dried glue of the panel and add it to the growing stack of maple panels growing in my living room work shop!

On the drill check that the drill shaft and chuck is installed correctly sometimes they can me off and give a wobble.

Yeah I had a cheap saw too. I got fed up with the fence, bad miter slots and lack of insert plate and I ended up tearing it apart and making a home-made saw out of it. More precise now and I used combo track (3/4" miter and T-slot) so I can lock down feather boards and such. Its more precise than it was and a bit quieter too now as well... It will do until I can afford a good saw.
Oh, and I love working with Kevin too.
Another great Ask Me-Mo segment. I love the questions and how you answer some and sort of answer others with humor. Always good for information and a laughter fix.

On the drill press, if there was debris on the spindle of the chuck, it could cause/contribute to runout (bit wobble). Try removing the chuck, cleaning it with some acetone, cleaning the hole out, then reassembling it...

I've recently run across crooked (black and decker) drill bits, smaller sizes from a multi pack, I found on clearance somewhere. Lay the bit on your table saw, roll it, and watch the light coming under the business end, is the light the same for both flutes?
Hysterical, I loved it.
On the other side of router bits...I had a 1/4 in a router table and it broke and no I didn't push extremely hard, that was a couple years ago.. still don't know where it landed but I only use a few different at a time so its only 1/2" shanks now
I use a program to speed up videos. Generally I watch them at 1.3x speed (so I can watch more videos). If you think Steve talks fast normally, try listening to him 30% faster! [ I've actually gotten used to all my favorite creators talking 30-40% faster, and when I hear them at normal speed, it actually seems waaayyyy slooowww! ]
Okay Steve, what about a veneer finished birch plywood.
Making a desk/cabinet/book shelf combination. This veneer coat (looks nice) that came on the wood is not strong for a table/desk top; it wants to chip. Should I put on a "epoxy resin" or a "polyurethane" coat or two?

I'm looking at buying a good quality table saw. I've looked at a few brands and models, but leaning towards the DeWalt DW744XP-XE. Does anyone have any reviews about this saw?
I wish we could get that type of plywood here in Australia. We go from structural CD grade to marine grade costing over $100 a sheet. Very few good ones in between.
same here in nz... luckily i only use ply for drawer bottoms and cabinet backs.
Besides, I do learn things from you. Now that I am over 75, I have a pretty nice wood shop and can now build things and if they are supposed to be square, they actually come out square. Only took me 50 years.

***** was that by any chance PureBond maple plywood? I have used that brand before in Birch and it was really a pleasure to work with. At the time the veneer was .02 thick which means that I was able to plane it in some areas after assembly! Can't say I have seen that thickness since at the Depot. Would love to hear from you on the veneer thickness. Thanks

About the router bit size, I use only 1/2 inch bits because of safety and that I can use larger cutters... 1/4 are just more likely to shear off.

It depends on the design, but yes. I built a cabinet to support my +/- 1,200 pound aquarium, and it's been supporting it for years. I did put solid-wood vertical pieces inside the 4 corners.

In our general DIY shops they sell internal and external ply. What's the difference? Plus it splinters really badly at the edge whenever you cut it. Is this a problem with all ply or just cheap ply?
internal plywood isn't treated or sealed to resist moisture like external plywood is. don't get wood from box stores... the grade is always horrible for how much you pay for it. Find a local lumber yard and they will have a better grade of plywood for the same price. the wood tearing could be a dull/cheap blade on your saw. also make sure your blade is designed for the job your putting it up to.
splintering is caused by two things, blade being set at the incorrect height, and using a blade has too few teeth, a high TPI blade will give you a nicer cut. You can also put masking tape over the cut while you cut it to minimize splintering.
I recently discovered that plywood is rarely accurate in the advertised thickness and that 1/4" plywood is generally closer to 3/16ths. Evidently this is because most plywood is shipped from overseas and so if they're accurate to anything it's actually millimeters. only domestic plywood is anywhere close to accurate to the advertised imperial measurements. I found that MacBeath Hardwood in Berkeley sells a very accurate 1/8" birch plywood but I've yet to find a good supplier of 1/4". How do you deal with this discrepancy while woodworking?

Another consideration when buying a table saw is to make sure it has a slider groove on both sides of the blade in case you want to make a cross cut sled. I had a Ryobi saw that only had one, and I had to buy a new Dewalt just so I could get the sled track on both sides.
Also, it's very beneficial to have an adjustment on both ends of the rip fence to square it up. My Dewalt has 2 allen screws on both ends, and it is extremely accurate when set up correctly. Just my 2 pesos.

Big box stores will cut 4x8 plywood sheets for customers but they must use blades with 3 tpi that have also cut black pipe because one side is always chipped out very badly. Any suggestions for someone who can’t get a sheet that big home?
I've bought sheets before that wouldn't fit in my vehicle. My solution was to try to have the store break the sheets down to a manageable size, an inch or two oversized. All the precision cuts I did myself at home. Even a lousy, rough, chipped-out cut will only cost you about 1/4" of waste, be more concerned about their cut location instead of their cut finish.

What finish on your router table?? Probably not a finish but more likely a silicone spray or something like that to make the wood slide easier.

Dewalt DW745 is the best low end table saw with a rack and pinion fence, its great and its around $320

Steve Please help. I just saw the Q&A video. About the after market table saw fence. I too have a low end tablesaw that overall does the job. But fence is terrible. When I lock it down the other end will move 1/4" inch. Then I have to measure from the blade to the fence and hold the front of the fence in place while trying to lock it down. Where can I find a decent fence that is compatible with a old Craftsman 24' saw.
You are my last hope.
lmk if you find one... i have one of those old saws too... love the saw but the fence is a joke and most of the aftermarket ones that would work are more expensive than a brand new saw would be... way too much for a hobbyist like me

What to look for when buying a table saw IMO is, make sure it has a riving knife. Not a splitter or those godawful pawls, a real riving knife. For 500 I would think an older quality cast iron saw would be within reach, though probably needing some work done on it, but one can save lots of money if you're willing and capable to do some light repair work, and you can get industrial quality machines.
One issue with this in a US-specific context though is based on my observations, riving knives seem to be uncommon on older, even professional level saws. In europe they where standardized on maybe even in the 60s. My 40 year old german saw has a riving knife and overhead guard and I've been able to observe in person as I accidentally pushed a part slightly wrong and how the knife prevented it from going into the blade and causing a kickback. Truly the best safety device ever for a table saw.
