Grumman really knew what they were doing when designing the Tomcat. Wide spaced engine nacelles that gave the F-14 either lifting body or a low drag weapon hardpoints. Large wing gloves that allowed for weapon pylons to be placed on them and thus low wing loading. Yeah, it may be massive, but when you look at its aerodynamics, it isn't a surprise why it performs as well as it does.
As an F-14 fanatic I can vouch that it also had it's problems though. The main being US Naval fighter doctrine require every aircraft to have 2 engines and for the plane to be able to fly with 1 engine due to reliability concerns which is one of the reason why for example the USN didn't adopt a Navy version of the F-16. However with earlier Tomcats until the F-14B's A-symmetric thrust limiter due to having such a wide space between the engines meant that it was extremely risky if not impossible to fly it on 1 engine in situations that would typically cause the plane to go back to only 1 engine (landing, take off ect) Grumman was great, but it wasn't without faults, that being just 1 of the most obvious.
@@southernbear736 TF-30 wasn't without issues, especially I'd say for air superiority fighter application. But in terms of aerodynamics, Tomcat is still impressive even today. The Cat is such a capable dog fighter. Big lift, plus high speed. If it had some more nose authority and wasn't as likely to kill you it would smoke everything in DCS. I always enjoy with your videos they are great. also I haven't play with dcs but I know that if you close the wings of f-14 tomcat it will move faster
hey man thank you, the moving faster part isn't really related to the position of the wings, moving the wings back doesn't make the plane go faster, the wings sweep back once the plane gets faster, if you're flying slow you want the wings forward as it will provide more lift and will allow for tighter turns. an interesting side note, Pilots in the F-14 would sometimes sweep their wings back when fighting F-15s to give the illusion of going faster and having a higher energy state but this was not a common thing they did as the F-15 guys quickly figured out what was going on and wouldnt fall for it again.
at 5:44 putting the lift vector behind the bandit would have worked out better
I like your intro in every single video its so good........... :)
Such an awesome intro with many interessting informations. thx for that. Anytime Baby
Will you consider joining the next year fold of honor, fights for honor tournament?
This man knows how to fly the f14.
Iranian F-14’s dominated when they were using their aim-54 missiles. They got stingy with the missiles but still performed well.
dude I've been binging your videos they're absolutely great! lots of real world info is the part I like! can you do some videos with either the a10 warthog, f4 phantom, or the su 27, or maybe all three lol
Nice TopGun reference at the end.
US Navy pilots: we want the Super Tomcat 21.
Iranian Air Force: hold my beer 😂
No in russsa we make super MIG21that explode for no reason that's better than your filthy capitalist planes a
Long live The Shah !!!
Can you do the centuries series planes or early 50's planes such as F7U Cutlass
just what is that 29 doing
Hottest. Jet. Ever. Made. :)
what a beauty fighter.
I think that was the win of the pilot , not the win of the machine .
Growling "Buzzsaw" Sidewinder strikes again!
Incredible cinematography
Very Interesting Intro. Had no idea we sold F14's to Iran. Wonder if they could shoe-horn the latest Russian vectored thrust engines into their 14's? That could make for an interesting dogfight.
Tomcat, Yes Please!
Giving top gun feeling right here.
Love the crosshairs or the hud symbology signs on the tomcat but seems to show less numbers than other modern huds. Wonder if its much of a disadvantage.
