When I was in the navy I used to watch the f14 and the a6 intruder flying around and it made me feel invinsible. I don't know if the modern aircraft exude as much confidence in today's sailors but I hope they do.
Well I’m not in navy but I work in a area that has fighter jets flying in and around the sky of a joint strike base. And we see a lot of f15 and f22. I can truly tell you when I hear the sound of those twin after burners I truly know we are a protected nation and I know no matter what this city is protected no matter what lol. I hope everyone feels that sense of safety and national pride when they see fighter jets.
Interesting fact: you had to launch tomcats one at a time off the older carriers because when their wings were fully extended they would reach over to the catapult beside it
I sort of laughed when the screen said the bear was getting too close to the carrier. In 1980, when Iran had the American hostages, my Marine amphibious unit was on the USS New Orleans, a helicopter carrier, floating in the Persian Gulf. The Soviet Bear aircraft flew so close to the carrier that you could see facial details on the Soviet airmen. We would wave at those guys and they waved back. They would circle around the ship several times, disappear, and then return again and again. We were floating around out there for about 60 days.
When I was in 2/3 I got to do RIMPAC one year and was on the helicopter carrier HMAS Canberra. We got a couple flybys from Chinese aircraft close enough that we could see a pilot taking pictures of us, so a few of us decided to moon them on one of their passes. I hope my cheeks are still in a folder marked “INTELLIGENCE” somewhere in Beijing
It'd be more interesting to try and guesstimate what Israel is going to do to/with their F-35Is. Just adding the Python 5 would be interesting close-in.
In terms of avionics and rising maintenance costs due to airframe fatigue, it was starting to grow long in the tooth by the mid-late 90s, but the design itself? Certainly had some more life left in it.
If anyone is ever in Charleston SC. We have a f14 on the deck of the Yorktown carrier. I think we have a f18 also. But the f14 was added back in 2017 I think it was. They have to sent up in launch ready. It allows you to walk around and get hands on with the f14.

I wish we had a way to know what the Iranians have done to upgrade their Tomcats. They may also have new engines, almost certainly of Russian design, and may have true combat flaps. Other possible upgrades can only be speculated. Well, I can’t really put any weight behind my thoughts I never fired an aim54 or worked on one in real life so what do I know? But to me it does appear to be kind of slow. It also doesn’t seem to loft when it feels like maybe it should. Sort of like using this as a trailer for mini-docs sometimes, while giving the BVR and dogfight crowd on this channel what they want at the end of the explanation...every now and then. Obviously they don't want to sit through that every time.
"...ANYTIME, BABY!" Love the Tomcat! I wish the Navy would have kept upgrading the Tomcat. I know she was a maintenance hog and I love the Bug and Super Bug but the F-14 is just an iconic Naval Aircraft. Would have liked to see Super Tomcat 21s, flying an Alpha Strike with A-6Fs and Super Hornets.

I like how you can see those retractable canards on the film of those Iranian F-14A models. I know the US Navy found them to be a non-factor in flight, so they permanently had them fixed in the retracted position on all later F-14 models. I wonder if the Iranians did the same with their A models?
Relatively recent pictures of the Iranian's modernized F-14AM still feature functioning Glove Vanes, so even after all this time they still don't weld them shut. Later B and D models ditched the glove vanes entirely.
That Bear looked like he was hauling ass. Even when the Foxhounds separated to engage you, it didn't look like there was a ton of separation. Might have been a trick of the optics, but, still. Nice intercept.
Great Video @GrowlingSidewinder! So this scenario exemplifies the purpose of the fleet interceptor and what the F14 Tomcat was built for, but it would be interesting to put one F18E/F in this same scenario to see if it can fill the shoes the Tomcat left behind. Moving the US and Russian (since the USSR has fallen) technological clock forward 10 to 20 years in technology just to be fair. Obviously carrier fleet defense is still a valid scenario, or has this threat diminished?
"Jalil Zandi " was a fighter pilot in the Iran Air Force who served during all of the Iran-Iraq War. His combat record qualifies him as one of the most successful pilots of that conflict in air-to-air combat as well as one of the best Iranian aces ever. It also made him the highest-scoring pilot in the history of the F-14 Tomcat. He earned his fame as an F-14 Tomcat pilot during the Iran-Iraq War. He has been reliably credited with shooting down 11 Iraqi aircraft (eight confirmed victories through examination with US intelligence documents released according to FOIA inquiry and three probable victories). The victories include four MiG-23s, two Su-22s, two MiG-21s, and three Mirage F1s.This makes him one of the most successful Iranian fighter aces and the most successful F-14 Tomcat pilot worldwide.

Yo GS. Nice mix of minidocs and your GS content. great video as always. F14 any time baby! Have a pleasant day. Cheers
These edutainment vids are definitely my favorite 👍
The victories include four MiG-23s, two Su-22s, two MiG-21s, and three Mirage F1s.This makes him one of the most successful Iranian fighter aces and the most successful F-14 Tomcat pilot worldwide.
had my first day at my new job. being received by a new GS video is just 👌
very cool, hope you had a good first day and you enjoy the new job.
Great fight by you GS in beautiful F14 Tomcat
Two vids in two hours? GG Growling!
4:30 bruh by this point I forgot this was a DCS video, thought I was watching one of those documentaries
Nicely done tho lmao
That was a really good military history lesson
11:55 classic F14 footage rifht there.... 😊
Dude the music you have when the em force is sick. Im not even playing and it fills me with dread lol.
did yall know that the audio in the introduction is from the conflict between two american f14s and two syrian mig 21s
Finally, you got the Mig-31 without using the Raptor or riding the ground crashing into trees lol. Well done. I was hoping you would Merge with it and take it to school.
Swing wings make F-14 such versatile fighter. Just needed better engine reliability I think. Good job
Id like to see a carrier landing. If it can be done on dcs
Ya know , there’s just something about the alarms and comms with the F-14 … nostalgia 👏🏾 🇺🇸
Those bears need a shaving. Badly.
That Tomcat is a sexy beast. Great video, GS!
I love the background song when you show the Russian planes.
Have to tried the F-14 Speed and Angels campaign on DCS? It’s created by an F-14 pilot who flew, A-6, F-14s and F-5s at Top Gun.
The Intro was very cool!
Would love to see you land on the carrier after the mission.
A mini doc on the Saab J35 Draken would be cool
I remember this matchup ending brutally. A cpu became a statistic that day
The fleet defender, imagine it with the new BVR missiles
