    Great review that I totally agree with. In fact if you think about it a bit, you could argue having soft corners with slight vignetting is what you want wide open, because you're more likely to be shooting a subject you want to separate from the surrounding. You only really need sharp corners if you're doing landscape work, when you'll be stopped down anyway for the depth of field.

    Hi! Love your channel! Was wondering- out of curiosity- how long did it take you to settle on a format for your videos? they seem so well structured and consistent down to about f16 when softness begins to creep in as an effect of diffraction...

    Nice review.
    But nobody mentions one problem with this lens and that is focus shift between f2 to f4.
    Mirrorless users will have no worries but on my D610 it is a problem.
    Live view is not always a solution in many situations.
    My micro adjustments are as follows:
    f1.8 -5
    f2.2 -8
    f2.8 -10
    f3.2 -12
    f4 -14
    After f4 depth of field resolves the problem.
    Otherwise a sharp, light lens best at f 5.6

    This and the 35mm are petty much essentials. So good. And very affordable for what they can do. Three lenses are why I picked Nikon over Canon. They simply can't compete against these lenses at these prices 😶

  • @EFFTEEZEE
    @EFFTEEZEE 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Optically A LOT better lens than 50.4G(which is more expensive). Most people will not going to complain that much about this lens's image quality. It's weakness is bokeh is somewhat harsh(but no onion rings), quite of color fringing and dull sunstars. And these are can be only achieved with bulky Sigma ART 50mm F1.4, or Z 50mm F1.8S when used with Z6, Z7.
    Anyway, This lens is quite bargain for nikon F mount.

    This was my first prime lens back in 2014. I still use it and is a beast. Sure the image is not as refined as the new 50mm Z 1.8S, but for $220 (compared to $600) is a no brainer

    • @lordwafflesthegreat
      @lordwafflesthegreat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@farisali8546 The 50mm f1.8 is essential to any and all Nikon owners. A must buy! It's great for portraits (70ish mm on APS-C) and lets in a lot of light for its price. Every photographer has to own a nifty-fifty for low light and portrait. That, and/or the 35mm f1.8.
      In my humble opinion, most people only need a 18-200mm superzoom for random photos and a 50mm for anything fancy. A two lens pack is perfect for traveling, just make sure you stock up on batteries!
      I wish I knew that before, now I mostly travel with a 18-55, 70-300 (kit lenses) and the 50mm. A bit bulky, but it's fine. Sometimes i only take the 50mm and my phone for wider daytime shots.

      According to every review website I've seen that has tested them properly, the G version is apparently a little sharper

    I can't wait for a review of Canon's 50 f1, 8 STM on your R5. This Nikon 50 looks pretty good on the Z7 for the amount of money you would pay.

    Which do you prefer using for z50? The 35 or 50mm?

    Amazing video and love how detailed you got with the F-stops. I have a D5300 and still use the kit lens, mostly for stills and some indoor video shoots. Will the 50mm af-s be a good lens to have for videos? Thanks !

    I've noticed my 50mm 1.8g shooting on the d5300 will yield photos that are slightly out of focus while using auto focus and using view finder. when using the same exact settings but using the live view, the photos are always crisp. if anyone has any advice that would be great because I almost always use the view finder

    • @barnazadori9227
      @barnazadori9227 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it happens because the viewfinder works with phase detection AF and it needs to be properly adjusted with some lenses in some cases as phase detection can be "blind" compared to contrast detection AF (in live view) there is no AF tuning option built in for the D5300 (which I also had and had an issue with a 18-105 lens) but if you take it to a Nikon service centre, then can do the AF fine tuning for you and it will work fine, like mine did.

    I had this lens before deciding to upgrade to Sigma's 50mm f/1.4 last year (based on your review). I always shot it at f/4 or f/5.6 and never really went brighter than that - simply due to never really feeling the need. Most of my photos with this lens are also cropped in somewhat or have out-of-focus backgrounds in the corners, so corner sharpness was never really an issue. And I was using the D7200, which is a DX camera as well.
    You can also pick this lens up used for a very good price. And someone almost always has it on sale, so you should never really be paying full price for this lens either.

    I had this lens. Works great, it is one of the powerhouses lens on my D700. Today I am using Z6 and 50 1.8Z, however I still like the color from the old setup. It was deeper and has more taste.
