More on the company and the pump.
Aerite is a neat, functional little pump, manufactured under this brand name by Walters and Dobson (see below) - with the good build quality and (generally) screw fittings to enable them to be dismantled. All the ones I've seen operate on the single-stage principle - one piston in one cylinder pushing out air at the end! Because of their relatively small size, you often need to keep up the pumping frequency with your foot to get a good volume of air going they don't usually have inbuilt non-return valves.
When originally supplied they would have had NR valves in the hose connector at the pump end. But I've seen a number without this - maybe hose replaced later in life? Sometimes those without NR valves in the hose connector do get air into the tyre successfully - but high-frequency pumping is needed!
Aerites don't usually have pressure test valves or pressure indicators - not the ones I've seen anyway
Sutty whose pumps are mostly smaller, similar to Aerite. These come in a range of pretty colours some come with a dial-type pressure gauge on the pump.
Walters and Dobson company
Walters and Dobson Ltd. (WAD) were a Sheffield manufacturer who made a range of high-quality pumps. The range included an advanced and beautifully designed double acting pump and a series of single-acting examples of various sizes. The firm was jointly founded in 1922 by William Mansfield Dobson (b.16 Feb 1896, d.15 Feb 1965) and Booth Walters (b.12 Aug 1895, d.23 Mar 1983).
WAD was in business in the same time period as the more famous Sheffield pump maker, Wm. Turner and Bro. (Kismet). Apparently, Wm. Turner and Walters & Dobson were very close for as long as the original owners were in place. In fact, during WWII the two companies worked together in support of the war effort and some details of their pump designs "crossed over".
Following World War II the WAD business was never the same due to ill health and responsibilities relating to the defence of the realm during the war. For instance, W.M.Dobson’s health suffered badly due partly to him being CO of the local Home Guard and Anti Aircraft Command Battery during the war. The firm passed onto the next generation after the founders and eventually, the Motor Accessories activity (including pumps) was sold. The intellectual property rights e.g. registered designs, patents etc. of this business were acquired by PCL (Pneumatic Components Ltd) also of Sheffield.
As a matter of interest, I have recently supplied a restored WAD pump to the son of William Mansfield Dobson, one of the founders. He wanted it for his family history project, never having seen one in his life and wanting to tell his son about the pumps! I am indebted to this elderly gentleman for providing me with the above information on the history of the firm and its founders.
WAD also manufactured lightweight, less heavy-duty pumps under the ‘Aerite’ brand in Chesterfield

Really a good job here. Many years of useful air pumping left in this! I struggle with what direction to take with old leather sealing parts like that. Your special paste was a great idea. I am going to consider finding something similar here.

yeah sometimes its the only way to prevent cross threading. helps the threads catch and you feel or even hear a click to know it's on the threads!

I love what you do with all the restorations. You are very talented. For me personally, this one wasn’t your most complete work. The top of the piston canister was left pitted and seemingly out of round (you obvi got the lid on). It was noticeable after powder coating. These are things that in previous projects would have been addressed.
I leave pitting on some projects for a reason, the pitting resembles the years of torture and history. I hate to remove them.

I’ve also got an old one that my Dad had. But I think the barrel of mine is solid brass. I must dig it out and have another look. I know that the membrane inside is also leather.
I wish this one was solid brass, I love brass!

looks great. one suggestion i have is that you really need more heat to hot blue metal parts like that bolt. the metal needs to start getting red in color. if you are worried about the temper, you can put it in an oven for awhile to stabilize it.
I tried to heat them till red but my little torch just did not have the guts for it. I will have to get something more powerful.

Nicely done. The powder coat will certainly last for years to come. I would have replaces the gasket seal on the pump cylinder plunger with a new one, but other than that....perfect! Thumbs Up!

I did search for a seal/gasket. It is made of leather and there is nothing of that size i could find on the entire internet. So the old one had to do. I even looked for rubber seals and tried to make my own, but even with my own one, it didn't work at all hahaha
according to Wiki, Dale's Dubbin is made of porpoise oil. betcha can't find that anymore!

I still use my Aerite foot pump that's been in our family for 70years. I've just took it apart and it's still as good as new. What happened to the Quality English tools we use to make that lasted forever. Now it's all throw away rubbish made in China.

Had one it was awful, thats not the original valve clip the original had a screw end with a rubber washer inside and it would'nt stay on the valve.
