  • In this video I restore this old Dunlop Standard footpump.
    The Process
The resoration of this vintage footpump was definitely a labour of love. Due to it's age it required unexpected parts, such as leather washers and a lot of elbow grease!
I started by disassemlbing the pump, and washing down the brass parts. I sanded down the main chamber and brass elements to remove the grime which had built up over the years. Meanwhile, the main frame soaked in rust remover to strip it down to bear metal.
Once the rust had been removed from the frame, It was treated with a base coat, followed by black gloss spray paint. The brand and model was hand painted on the footrest.
I made a new leather washer to replace the existing solution, which looked like it had been fixed using two thinner pieces at some point. This was fitted to the pump and soaked in vegetable oil.
Once all parts were ready, the pump was reassembled ready for use once again!
Thanks for watching, see you next time.

    Hey all,
This took a little longer than I expected, a few unexpected set backs but finally got it finished and really pleased with the finished product!
While not 100% true to original (the original had black bands at either end of the brass chamber), the wear and tear lent itself to a full brass mirror finish.
Hope you enjoy the video. Please feel free to leave any feedback in the comments below.
    Cheers!

I've just been given an identical Dunlop footpump in much the same condition hence searching for and finding your video. An epic restoration and has inspired me. I hope to do similar, but as this is only likely to be a show peice, I might not do the internals as that looked like a nightmare. Thanks for the video.

Hello, have the same one, not polished ex just made/fitted new leather washer, just want to ask, the 2 holes at the top of the cylinder have they got to match the 2 holes on the spring holder/cap?.Thank you!..

Hey Steven, that's right. These need to line up to allow air into the back of the cylinder when the pedal is compressed and the spring stretches. If you screw the cap on right they should line up automatically.
