    Played lots of Hero Quest as a kid. My Dad tried to get us on this Advanced one but it was a bit complicated for 8-10 year olds. Only played it a couple of times before going back to the original.

      Similar here - though I was probably around 14. Remember the "rat people" and the modular plates.
      Preferred the simpler rules and liked the aesthetics of HQ much more.

    Nice video! You`ve done a very good job with theming the henchmen. Very smart indeed!
    Haven`t played it for ages but still my favourite dungeon crawl. I particularly like the D12 system and also the realism of having to buy spell components in between adventures. If you have two fireballs then when they`ve gone, they`ve gone. It makes you think more carefully about when to use them rather than being able to hurl one almost every turn as in games such as Warhammer Quest. It was a shame they didn`t add more expansions but the one they did, Terror In The Dark I thought was very good

    AHQ has NOT removed monster variety. They are just not included jn the box. You can add every model of the GW Old World line of White Metal models. I made cards of the printed cards in the RPG rulebook included in the game. This game really is a square based skirmish game that needs a DM or AI cards and scenarios. Descent 1st edition is more like this game than WHQ.

    Just like to add something else I like about AHQ and that is the randomness of the dungeon levels. You can`t descend into the next level until you find some stairs inside a room to do so. These stairs only appear in certain types of rooms and even then you have to make a roll to mean that they are there. That means you have no idea how large each level might be. In one game you might find the stairs quickly and in another you won`t. I love that kind of level of randomness and never knowing. It`s not until you get to the bottom level of each game that the dungeon is mapped out for you

    At long last Advanced Heroquest is getting some love lol. I've got this game sat on the shelf, will have to play it and compare the rules with the new fan rules. Me and my brother used to play this game when we were youner back in the day and lucky I collected Skaven and Chaos armies so had many of of the minis which was handy...........Love to see a playthrough, as this game is under-rated and overlooked, sometmes forgotten. It's hard and sometimes unfair but that's what you want in a game nothing too easy lol.

    Some elements sound like an improvement over HeroQuest but it sounds overally complicated just for complicated sake. I still believe HeroQuest the superior, more family friendly and lay person game. Dungeon crawlers don't have to be over complicated to be enjoyed. The basic combat and the board I think are better and you can still heavily modify it for your own enjoyment if you are that way inclined. HeroQuest leaves alot open for the players to muck around with and let their imagination fly. Advanced HeroQuest is just not as player friendly although hit definitely sets a theme for more advanced uses who ended up going into Warhammer table top games. I will always cherish my HeroQuest game and it's expansions. Many people on line have given me great ideas in improving it without overally complicating it. I even have my own ideas of expanding it and that's what makes it an all time classic and great board game.

    • @TheBattlinBarrowGaming
      @TheBattlinBarrowGaming  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes AHQ can be over complex and all that rolling on charts can really slow the game down. I do love it though, but Heroquest is the best and will always have a special place in my heart.

    I much prefer how WHQ does the random dungeon, with dungeon cards to represent every tile so you never run out and you know you’ll get to the objective room eventually, it’s not dependent on random dice rolls. I also much prefer the art and variation of the tiles in WHQ. It’s just such a shame it’s so expensive now. I wish I’d kept hold of my copy from back in the 90s. I never even really played back then either, I was too young to fully understand it and me and my friend just kept playing Talisman 3rd edition instead!

    Came originally for your dungeon tiles based upon HeroQuest. I am making my own set and I'm still deciding ultimately what material I intend to use. I played, but did not own that game as a child and, being an American, Advanced HeroQuest was largely just not a thing here in the US.
    About ten years ago, I bought a mostly complete copy of HQ for a fair price. It had fraying cardboard edges on the furniture bits and box had blown its corners. I repaired these and bought what I was missing, but … I also saw a listing for AHQ from a UK shop for a song along with the AHQ paint set. Shipping was dreadful of course, but I proudly own both now. I didn't really play the game because, as you say, it's a completely different game, the rules are quite wall-of-text and not particularly good, and it's really just an attempt to get you to buy a bunch of Citadel minis which you can't buy anymore.
    Still, I appreciate having Skaven to add to my HQ game, and the random dungeon generation is nice too. On the whole, I'm glad I bought it.

    I have some questions about the game and how its played.
    1. Can the monsters move out of the rooms once they have been "opened" by a hero?
    2. Do the "wandering monsters" show up every time a hero searches for treasure or just the one time?
    3. When do the objects show up to the hero in the room? when they enter the room or just look thru the door?
    4. Are there rules of engagement? can a hero disengage from a monster if they have exchanged an attack?
    5. Can a hero move around a room without engaging with a monster?

    • @TheBattlinBarrowGaming
      @TheBattlinBarrowGaming  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      1) Yes they can but you can loose them, if you are out of line of sight after two turns they return to the room.
      2) There are two ways of playing with a GM and solo. If with a GM when you search there is chance you fail if this happens the GM can take a token, These are various things like traps and wandering monsters. THe GM is free to play these at any point so could play a wandering monster when searching. If playing solo when searching you roll a dice and a fail rule can produce wandering monsters.
      3) THe room, including monsters is set up as soon as the door is opened.
      4) Everyone has a deathzone, these are the squares adjacent to the model (not diagonal) when something enters this they must stop and all they can do is fight. Next turn they are free to move out of the zone.
      5) As long as you dont enter the death zone then yes you can move around monsters in a room.
      Hope this helps.

    This is a weird mix of improvements over the original and steps backward. The art design is so ugly on this (that box art says it all), where everything in original Heroquest looked amazing. I'd miss the nice solid gameboard even though these flimsy dungeon tiles allow for more dungeon shapes. And where's the furniture? Doors that seem better but actually all break immediately. Overall I'd rather play original Heroquest for the loving design of every element and if I want more complexity, just jump up to AD&D.
