Just bought my first Opinel (walnut N.06) about 10 minutes ago! Can't wait for it to get here. Thanks for your comparison, and your collection is already making me consider getting an olive one!
The very first Opinel I had was a n°8 I found in my land, maybe lost by one of our gardeners. But the first one i bought was a carbon n°6 and i totally agree with you, it's the perfect size to carry and use. Even if I'm a victorinox guy, i love this little knife.
I've just ordered the No 6 Walnut. I couldn't work out if it would fit in my palm, like a Barlow, otherwise it would likely be uncomfortable, so I ordered the No 8 in walnut too. Well, that's my excuse anyway. I'd agree on the Sandvik. I was looking for a carbon blade, but when I saw the stainless was 12C27, I was happy enough.
Man, tough to choose which one I like best. I love that the beechwood gets a nice patina over time, but the padauka with the polished steel is gorgeous. And the oak/olive handles have the most dramatic contrast in the grain. And I'm always a sucker for walnut. So I guess I just want them all? Hahahaha. I'd love to see a birds eye maple handle too!
I like the walnut and the olive the best. I own two no.6's: an inox with a walnut handle and a modified blade (drop point) and a carbon steel that I left stock. Live them and get a lot of use of the inox, more than the carbon steel. Thanks.
I just got a No. 6, carbone blade. I love the size, as I have smaller hands. Pretty sharp right out of the box. It’s just simple and beautiful. I like how it fits closed in my hands, like a roll of dimes or something.
Hi there, you have a nice collection of no. 6 👍 I have the padouk, the olive and the beech, all inox. But I also have two coloured ones. Color turquoise, and sage green, which have lanyard holes and small leather cords, handy to pull the knife out of the pocket, also prevents you from dropping the knife when using it. I like the coloured ones very much, they have a modern fresh look ! No. 6 is my favourite EDC knife, the low weight is perfect. Also I recommend the giant no. 13 which is a beast ! (kitchen use) And the no. 12 saw is great to carry in your backpack when hiking. 🙋♂️ from the Netherlands.
just got myself stainless steel oak number 6 today, and i can tell that its most optimal size to carry it in a pocket without getting upset about to loose it, because i've had beech number 7 before, and, maybe its just placebo effect, but oak feels like little bit more weight in hand, so I do not worry about it to fall out of a pocket accidentally.
Well, the two Opinel's arrived. Dear God, a light strop and they produced a whole new level of sharp. I've sanded and given them some mineral (Baby) oil to bring up some grain. The No 6 now has a Zulu style point, but I've kept the secret of it's success, the Yatagan recurve. On the No8, I've changed the shape of the butt, so it curves towards the tip when folded. I'm looking at the No9 already, so I guess I'm hooked.
I had a #9 stainless in walnut even had my initials engraved on the blade. My Brother caught a glimpse of it and was intrigued by the simplicity, so I gave it to him as a memento. I just ordered a #9 with oak handle in stainless with the phrase "live free" on the handle. As an EDC it's all I need I can use it in the kitchen and defend myself with it. I was one who was endlessly looking for the perfect knife. watching video after video of all the choices and price ranges can you believe I settled on a 35 dollar Opinel. This is a knife I will actually use daily and not have stuck in a drawer afraid to damage. Nothing fancy but old school history
Also my preferred size bc perfect for edc. You can't go wrong with an opinel. Have a beech wood inox steel. For the price you won't get a better knife. ☮️
@@TheStreamingEnderman cheers. You should check out the böker plus atlas if you haven't already . It's another budget knife which is way too good for the price. ☮️
I own 20 number 8s of various woods, love all of them including my special edition ones. The number 8 fits my hand better. Olive wood ones are very pretty grained woods.
Good choice young man! The Walnut #6 is my go-to ultralight backpacking knife, because you get 3 inches of decent drop-point cutting edge, a proper sized handle which is more moisture-resistant than the standard beech, a backspine which will easily raise a fat spark from a ferro rod (with the knife closed!), an effective locking system, 12c27 steel which is so easy to maintain in the field, AND ALL AT ONLY 28 GRAMS!!! So I have a few of the Walnut #6, and also of the Olive #6 which I find make charming picnic knives. Otherwise I prefer the larger Opinels, with the Walnut #9 being my favourite - awesome fishing knife which will also perform most outdoorsy stuff. And, like you, I'm fascinated by different woods, so I have a #8 in most of the woods available - the #8 is best for this, as it's the 'original' sized Opinel and therefore the one they make the largest range of. But unless you're a carbon purist (and there's nothing wrong with the Carbone, I just prefer the Inox's practicality and food-friendliness), the Walnut/Inox combo is in my opinion the best of the lot.
I love Opinel knives. Years ago I found a well-used No.6 in my local woods. It's made from dark timber, definitely not the standard beech. I believe it must be a Walnut Opinel as well.
I love the no. 6, I know that the no. 8 is the standard but I find the no. 6 to be a bit more pocket friendly, especially if you carry your knife in your watch pocket like I do
Las n° 8 son las más famosas... pero la n° 6 mucho más práctica. He regalado de las primeras unas cuantas, pero para mí me reservo la 6. Es perfecta para llevar encima.
How does the #6 feel in your hand? Would a #7 feel better? My #8 is a perfect fit for my hand, and my first one was a #7, which I lost, and which I loved because it looked so inoffensive.
For me, the No.6 is just right. Any smaller and I'd say it's "too small", however. So if you have larger hands, it may not suit you as well as a '7 or an '8. The larger sizes are equally comfortable, (for me) so I'd say the No.6 is the smallest it could be before entering the realm of uncomfortable. Cheers!
the best one in your collection is your first. Carbon steel is great and F'ing sharp and apparently you need to deepfry the beech before use, nice collection and vid
Hey man. Love you collection. I have no6 Carbon and no8 Olive. I love the Olive handle because it's heavier and looks sturdier. So I wanted to ask. What is the weight comparison between these knifes? Which one is the heaviest and lightest? Is Oak the most dense wood?
Hi there, I believe Ebony is the most dense. However, I don't have an Opinel in Ebony. So I would say Olive is the most dense. Maybe followed by Oak or Walnut. Beech however, is the lightest.
We have a guy at work whose handle got messed up and so he made a new handle out of pine that was aged and then he let it sit for a few months and stained it.
Yea for me...the 6 is way too small. I have the 8 9 and 10...9 I find for my hand the best fittingnice choices of handle materials too if I may say. A desert ironwood burl would be my choice if they would make one...but I'd go with an olive wood if I had to choose one of theres
I have the number 6, in olive wood, in my jacket pocket, which I wear when I go down the woods,, It's a handy little knife, but I could be arrested, and taken to the cells, in the local police station for carrying it,, Yep, we've got great laws here in England,, 🤣🇬🇪,, ps, I like the olive the best,, pps, I've got a walnut No 8 somewhere,, 🤔 and a bubinga filleting knife, which I haven't seen for years,,, 🤣
You're living a dangerous life, friend! 🤣 Olive is a very smooth and silky wood, it has a grain that looks and feels unlike any other. That Ettrick I'm waiting on is in Olive, and I can't wait to compare it to my Opinel! Cheers!
Hace sñoz uso dos opinel. Siempre de carbóno, realmente unac navajas fantásticas,,si no.uso Pallares de Catalunya españa,es por que no.tiene cierre peto es otrz estupends navaja de filo espectacular 😅😅
I always overlooked these pocket knives...but im starting to really appreciate the classic design...and that thin blade.
Just bought my first Opinel (walnut N.06) about 10 minutes ago! Can't wait for it to get here. Thanks for your comparison, and your collection is already making me consider getting an olive one!
Olive is noticeably heavier than any other materials, so far!
The very first Opinel I had was a n°8 I found in my land, maybe lost by one of our gardeners. But the first one i bought was a carbon n°6 and i totally agree with you, it's the perfect size to carry and use. Even if I'm a victorinox guy, i love this little knife.
It'll always be an outstanding knife!
@@TheStreamingEnderman yes, 100% agree.
Here in France the Opinel 6 is 10 Euros from the official site (maybe cheaper elsewhere.) that is $10.89 or £8.33. Amazing value.

I’m enjoying having a browse through your early reviews. This video has influenced me to throw my No.6 in the pocket for a ride. It’s been a while 😊
It's been a while indeed! I'm just hoping to get a video or two back on this channel sooner or later! Cheers!
@@TheStreamingEnderman I’ll migrate over to the raven once I finish with this catalogue 👌
And the Raven will be waiting with open wings!
Bought my first no 6 today in Normandie France 🇫🇷 whilst on holiday beautiful knife great video really enjoyed it
Enjoy your holiday, my friend! What handle did you choose?
I own a padouk no 6. After a year of daily use, the wood is even more gorgeous!
Outstanding choice! Cheers!

Maple, Cherry, Cocobolo, Elder, Bog Oak, Stag... So many options they could use!
I like the walnut and the olive the best. I own two no.6's: an inox with a walnut handle and a modified blade (drop point) and a carbon steel that I left stock. Live them and get a lot of use of the inox, more than the carbon steel. Thanks.

Enjoy!

The 12C27 Sandvik is a better steel than the steel on Swiss Army knives. It’s a harder and even tougher than the steel on SAKs

Walnut is my favorite. But I swap the inox blades out for the carbon ones.
Nice handle choice! And a great blade, too.

Nice collection 👍
How do you get them without the logo on the handle?
Only the Beech models come with a logo on the handle, in my experience. Try buying from Kent of Inglewood, that's where I get mine. Cheers!
Nice collection 👍🏻
Thanks you! 😄
Have you seen the no.8 in palm tree!?? It is crazy beautiful. And I got one :)
I bought my first Opinel last week, a No 08😊, I think I need a 06 as EDC😬
