    I have carried a buck knife since the late 60’s to the present day. Today I carry the buck 112 slim. Not because all the other bucks were inferior it’s because of my preference of knife weight. When I hunt I carry the 113 in my pack and the 110 on my side. Never has any of the buck knives I own failed. That’s a 60 year review of the Buck knifes I own.

    Got my 112 two dot in 77 and paid 15 dollars for it. Dressed countless deer, rabbits and squirrel and it's still perfect it's always been a shaver and it's only been on the whetstone maybe a half-dozen times.

    I bought my Ranger in December of 1972. I still have it and use it daily. It is a little different from the modern ones, the brass handle is squared, not rounded, and the pins attaching the handle are different. It does not have the two large pins at the back, but rather a single small pin. Very good folding knife.

    Thank you for sharing your excellent review of the Buck 112 Ranger.
    My first Buck knife was the model 110. A while later I picked up the Buck 110. These are extremely well handling, comfortable knives for personal use.
    I also have an older Schrade 10T lock blade knife.
    Here's the Buck story as it relates to the USS Ranger fight between sailors:
    A first generation Buck 112 Ranger hunting knife
    The story tells of an altercation between two sailors on the USS Ranger which became very serious. One of the sailors was inflicted with a deep stab wound, supposedly from a Buck 110. Due to the severity of the wound, the USS Ranger commander banned all knives with a blade exceeding 3” from use on the ship. This also disqualified the 110 from being sold in the ship’s store.

    I carried one when I was overseas in the Army in the early 70's. It was the only size we could carry in uniform and it was for sale in our very tiny PX. I wore it everyday and it was a work knife. I tried to take care of it , but it took some dings here and there. Always a great knife.

    My 112 is my edc. The handle is already solid, but I highly recommend going with the finger grooves. I bought mine in 2008, I really haven't been looking for it, so if you can't find it in stores you can always customize a 112. I just got a custom Spitfire and it arrived in under two weeks.

    I’ve always been a fan of the Buck 110 but today I ordered my first Buck 112 from the Buck website. I ordered mine with the nickel steel bolsters and drop point blade. Can’t wait until it arrives. I will be buying an open top holster to edc carry it in just as I carry my 110s ( unless I am hunting or fishing which is when I use the factory Buck snap sheath). The rugged elegance of the standard 110 and 112 knives gives them a beauty that not many other knives can come close to.

    Just thought of another point which you touched on. The weight is noticeable when compared to other pocket knives but mostly due to new styles use much lighter weight but not as sturdy materials. There are many people that carry around a Leatherman.. most popular, the Wave. That comes in at almost 9 ounces not including the sheath. Most people carry the Wave using the pocket clip so that’s pretty rough on the pocket.

  • @johnhildenbrand2642
    @johnhildenbrand2642 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The 110 works well as a hunting knife, but the size of the knife does not have any direct correlation to the size of game it is suitable for. They do not use machetes to process cape Buffalo or moose, it generally has more to do with the size of your hands and the specific method you use to process the game, I have a Buck 102 that I like for field dressing everything from squirrel to trout to doves to deer and pigs. The reason I like that knife is because it takes and holds a fantastic edge, I can reach my first finger to the tip of the blade while working within the body cavity of an animal where I cannot see while working, and the phenolic material while not giving as much grip as other materials, it cleans up quickly and easily.
    As far as whether or not a given serviceman carries a Buck or a Spyderco or whatever, it is largely down to personal choice. In Afghanistan I carried a few different blades depending on mission requirements, I had a SOG Seal Pup on my IBA, I would also almost always carry my Buck Stockman pattern in my pocket, the 110 also came along on the belt when I felt it was appropriate or might be useful for whatever we were patrolling or doing that day.

    Good video! If you have a chance, put some Brasso on the brass & steel, treat the wood & it will look like a jewel when you are done...I have a '91, so I should know...😊 The front bolster is designed to give you a better grip on the knife while you are processing game...i., e., it will keep your hand from slipping forward & slicing your hand...Also, the knife's balance is towards the back - the heavy end is designed to fit the palm to give you more of a purchase as you gut and begin to process a deer, for example....

    If you like a knife but don't want to buy it because it's not as practical as other knives, then you're not a real knife lover.
    When choosing a knife, you need to understand whether you like it visually, whether it fits comfortably in your hand, then imagine that there is no more choice, and understand whether it will do the job that is required of it. If it fits all the criteria, then you should take it.

    • @TheStreamingEnderman

      Exactly how I felt about the 112. The 110 wasn't nearly as confortable for me, had worse blade-centering (from what I remember) and just overall didn't catch my fancy like the 112. I understand the 110 is the older, more historical model. To me, however, the 112 is my favourite Buck for overall comfort. The 112 is still large enough if I need a hunting knife, but small enough I would carry it around with me on my belt. Cheers!

    When I was a kid the Buck 110 was my grail knife. This was way back in 1974 when I was 10 years old. I finally got one a couple years later and a 112 sometime after that. So much has changed in the knife industry since then that the 110 and 112 just don’t make sense anymore, except for maybe hunters. There are so many knives that are better all the way around. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the 110 and 112 models but they don’t see much use anymore.

      I’m a delivery driver who works in a rural part of my state. Occasionally, one of the old farmers will want to open their delivery on the spot and they’ll retrieve a Case knife from their pocket or a Buck from the pouch on their belt. They’ve likely had that same knife for decades and it does the same tasks that the $250 Zero Tolerance knife in my pocket with 20cv steel does.
      I had the same mentality initially when I started collecting knives. The “old knives” didn’t make sense anymore. But that was because they didn’t rise to the level of my steel snob desire to have the best so I could impress others. So I bought a Case knife. And a Buck. And I fell in love all over again with the build quality and simplicity of a functional knife.
      I still have and use brands like Spyderco and Kizer, but my true passion is for the classics.

      Honestly, the old knives really stick out to me. I have quite a few Spyderco’s, ZT’s, and a few Benchmade, but I know for certain that my 112 can take more of a beating and come out on top over any of the others. The more expensive models have become my weekend pocket carry but when it comes to 12 hour work days and hard work, I’ll never leave without my 112. Too many times have I even come across people afraid to use their $300 knife because they don’t want to scuff the finish!! The moment I hear that I usually tell them they have no purpose carrying a knife then.

    I hear this repeated a lot and I disagree. When choosing a vintage knife one must accept the inherent characteristics that come with it, as you would if choosing a vintage car. Men use to EDC the 110 in their Jeans in the 70's. Even more so with the 112 . Its a pocket knife, we put it in our pockets. Only working men and farmers brought pouches for these back in the day, as they did not come with them.

    • @TheStreamingEnderman
      @TheStreamingEnderman  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fair enough. It's far heavier than a modern EDC, but for a traditional knife, it's perfectly acceptable. I'd personally rather have a beefy, brass bolstered knife like this than something modern and 'lightweight' like a Benchmade Bugout. Then again, I'm biased, as I just love old-school knives! Cheers!

    It was introduced in 1972. You should have known this before you did your review
    The name of the ship where the stabbing occurred was the USS Ranger. Get your facts straight!!
    OMG>...you "don't own a 110, but you like the 112 better".......you lost ALL CREDIBILITY at that point.....wow.
    Have you ever ventured beyond the pavement ????? Are you really qualified to review a knife meant for outdoorsmen ???

    • @TheStreamingEnderman
      @TheStreamingEnderman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Hi Greg. I admit I was unaware of the exact date of introduction. Thank you for correcting me. The name of the USS Ranger was a fact I had heard, yet forgotten. So I appreciate the reminder. I do however, have to disagree on a couple things. The first being your claim for my "lost credibility". I need to remind you that I did NOT say the 110 was better nor worse than the 112. I merely said I preferred the 112. How does that lose me any credibility? I even said that the 110 would be a better outdoorsman's knife. The 112 is smaller and more suited for non-outdoor activities. I also stated that the 112 is VASTLY more comfortable in my hand. I have handled multiple 110s and still prefer the 112. Saying I lose credibility for daring to have my own opinion? We clearly have reached an odd standard for reviewers now! Also, the statement of "I'm not qualified to review an outdoorsman's knife" is absolutely ridiculous. A knife can have many uses. An outdoors knife can cut boxes, carve wood, trim thread, cut food, sharpen pencils, and so much more. Just because it isn't being used in the outdoors 100% of the time does not make a person's take on it to be null and void. I can vouch for it despite not using it for hunting and the like. So correct me if I'm wrong, but aparrently if I don't own both knives I can't claim to say which one I PREFER? And if I use my knife in a rural town environment I am not "qualified" to talk about it? By all means, if I am reading this wrong, do enlighten me.

Would you take me seriously if I was reviewing a drill and said: "I don't make holes with it, but it is terrible at banging nails" Surely you see the ridiculousness there. Judging the 112/110 on any basis other than their function in the outdoors is just as silly

      @Greg Barry… I think you are on the same level as the guy that told me my Thanksgiving meal was not traditional because I preferred to have collard greens as opposed to green beans…fucking WOW!
      I own a few 110s and 112s and have not been hunting a day in my life but I prefer the 110 because I like blades at least 3.75. I love cutting food, boxes, strings, and etc with all my knives to include my Junglas. Although cutting boxes and food is not the intended use for the Junglas.
      I own Cold Steel Knives and have not had to cut or stab anyone in my life, and I like my Cold Steel Knives better than my other folding knives.
      I own Glocks, Mossbergs, Ak47s, and I have not hunted or had to shoot anyone. However, I love my Mossbergs over Glocks and Ak47s.
      I believe I am free to judge what I desire and especially since MY MONEY paid for the items to use as I please.
