I’m an American 🇺🇸 I have knives ranging from $20 to $450. My collection is probably worth $4,000. Oddly, all summer long I carry a Opinel 7. In warmer weather, I wear shorts and linen pants. I don’t want a heavy knife, nor do I want a pocket clip. It’s crazy that I have expensive fancy out-the-front automatics and still opt for the Opinel 7. 😂 I love it. Friends make fun of me but they just don’t get it. Just wanted to throw that out there.
I know this is 3 months old, but I wholly enjoyed this video. I’m an Opinel fan myse, so I really appreciated all your great Opinel’s and customs. Thank You 2nd Chance ❤👍
Opinel, one of my favorite subjects. My #9 was the first dedicated backpacking knife, almost 50yrs ago. The memories attached to that knife are special my daily carry is a #8 oak handle well done George !
@@2ndchancegeorge I was carrying a #9 , last week on my camping trip. Not knowing you were showing this video. Lolol. An Opinel and a condor hudson bay knife was all I needed on this trip. Thanks George !
I got my first Opinel in 1982, a number 8 that was in a backpacking store. I became a converted Opinel fanatic. Carried that number 8 up to the late 90's, when I downsized to a number 6. The number 6 was in use up to about 2005 when I started to develop an appreciation of the number 4 and 5 non locking Opinel's in my love of all things retro, like black powder rifles and traditional archery. These days the number 5 is my most carried pocket knife. It's so light I can carry it in my shirt pocket and not notice it. And like all Opinel's, it cuts like the dickens!
My son gifted me a no.12 carbon. Man is it sharp! I made a really cool leopard spot pattern type patina with yellow mustard on the blade. Learned that trick from a TH-cam vid. Turned out well. Next project going to make a leather sheath for it. Love Opinel knives.
That was awesome, George. Great imagination and mods. I've never seen so many kinds of Opinel ideas. BTW, if you want to harden leather, melt a good amount of beeswax in it with a hairdryer or a heatgun. (You can put the whole sheath in melted beeswax, too, but then the wax gets inside the sheath, and it's difficult to clean it out)
A Finn here. The handle of a "puukko" is oval in cross section to properly index in the hand, not round like a broom handle. Also the blade is thicker than that of an Opinel and sharpened differently making it much stiffer and more durable against bending and chipping. "Puu" means "wood" in Finnish, "puukko", even though it is regularly used as a general purpose knife, is primarily designed for whittling and even splitting wood.
@@2ndchancegeorge No problem, I have an Opinel No7 and I like it, I'm thinking maybe gettin another bigger one, maybe a 9 or 10 as I too have big hands and find the handle of the 7 too small. But as said, the blade grind of opinel is thin, full width hollow ground one, almost like a straight razor. Excellent for razor-like slicing sharpness but not very tolerant of abuse like twisting or bending in which a "puukko" exels as the blade is fairly sturdy and has a tang going all the way through the handle and traditionally riveted at the other end to ensure the blade stays in place. By the way, there are probably dozens of styles of traditional "puukko", every area of Finland had their own. Some have just an oval handle, some have a small, usually one-sided guard and some have a pommel. The guard and pommel can be shaped from the same material as the rest of the handle or they can be made of metal like brass. The handle can be made of wood (usually birch, often a piece with curly grain was selected which leads to calling the knife "visapää", literaly "curly head"), stacked discs of leather or birch bark, bone or horn. There are also many styles of sheaths, often full lenght ones, covering both the blade and the handle (or at least about half of the handle like yours) for secure retention when worn on the belt. Sheaths were made of leather, birch bark or later even metal, especially on ones made by soldiers in the trenches during WW2 who had access to aluminium from downed aeroplanes, and there's usually a wooden insert inside the sheath to protect it from the blade. There are also models where there are two similar knives, one small, one large, in one sheath. Of course nowadays both the handle and the sheath on "puukko" meant to be used as cheap, everyday heavy duty tools by workers are made of plastic. But those are usually very cheap and considered disposable while traditional models can be quite expensive, especially if hand-forged. Sorry about the long text but we Finns are kind of proud of our traditional knives. So are the French about the Opinel, no doubt.:)
@@dlighted8861 It depends on the intended use. A thin blade has it's uses as it can be sharpened into a razor edge for cutting tough materials like leather.

not important if they're the best. "The best" in any respect is entirely subjective, and an immature point to defend. It's like saying "blue' is the best color, makes no sense. Opinel is one of several quality knife makers. It's a good knife to use as long as it's maintained.
@@2ndchancegeorge not at all. My no. 6 has always been ideal. It's light but very well balanced. If that's what one likes, then it's a fantastic choice at a great price
@@janospeto831 well, again that depends on what you need it to do. I can think of several different knives that would be a much better choice for very hard or thick materials. I certainly wouldn't use it to cut thin wire, or plastic, because it would just dull the blade quickly. I'd need a thicker blade for that

a great collection of truly simple and elegant knives. I too love the Opinel. I'm creating my own collection of modded Opinels. tight lines this winter.
Thank you for sharing George. The Opinel 8 fits my small had size best. There is something about the modest construction and great functionally these knives have.
Nice collection George and yes I’ve seen everyone of these videos you put out , well worth the effort. Opinel’s in my opinion one can’t go wrong with one ! Or a couple I own some and use them can’t beat them all carbon . Lovely knifes and keep a razor edge. Take care George.
I just sharpened my Opinel knife today. It's a newer one but holds a fine edge. It was sharp, but I like a shaving edge. A little ceramic rod and some leather and back to razor sharp. It's the green wood stainless one. A strong dependable knife!

Thankyou, I have since added to it and still going. Lol. Cannot get away from them. Yep, nobody has come up with the perfect solution. Maybe dipping it (handle only) in a wood sealer...you be safe sir
I got my first opinel long ago as a gift, was a number 7 in Carbon. I bought an Inox 10 or 11 for as a camp cooking knife since chopping onions and such are not great with a Mora scandi grind. Also have a Higo no kami and a few other oddballs. Sweden, Japan, France, US, and I'm sure there's at least one Chinese knife around here. Spoiled for good knives, but I need one made in Canada, so I've been meaning to make one much like the Opinel slipjoint as well as fixed blade at one point. Done my research on metallurgy so I can do a good heat treatment, maybe even better than mass production inexpensive knives. Just going to spend a lot of time with a file, no forging right off the bat.
What a great video this was! I appreciate you sharing your ideas and passion. I love when people get creative with their Opinel knives. I hope to see more projects from you in the future :)
Great video and knives! Just got my first Opinel no. 6. I’ve added a lanyard hole and make a neck sheath. Definitely getting more. Probably no. 8 moving forward.
Having a new Opinel on hand, and not knowing yet how to mod this one, that resonates with me. Any Opi that is going in my pocket will get slimmed in some fashion so it doesn.t make a lump.
Blade shape ideas could be a spear point or a chisel point. Chisel point would be good around the shop when you are modding your next one. Good source for leather is Weaver Leather or your local Tandy Leather. And, regarding carbon versus stainless, I prefer carbon as it is easier to sharpen in the field and I think it holds an edge as good as the stainless if the heat treat is done right. I have carbone and inox Opinels and both hold an edge great for me. Most of my outdoors fixed blades are all carbon. Great video and loved the comparison of the different models and mods.
I bought three opinels. One was the standard #8, the others were the fish knife and the Serpette. Loved them all but 2 things will always bug me about them. First is the perennial sticky blade issue that you mention. The other is how the lock ring looks and feels so cheap and tinny. I gave all mine away, but if I ever buy another Opinel, the first thing I'll do is cover the ring with either eel skin or book-binding leather, or maybe a tinted epoxy. Tried gun bluing but it didn't work. Can't imagine why Opinel doesn't just powder-coat them all.
I think it's all about buying a piece of history. If this was a new company manufacturing the same product for the same price, would the knives be as popular? I'm just not sure. However, my favorite kitchen knife is a blue handled serrated fixed blade - fantastic knife. I hope the company keeps up its success.
They have been around for a long time. We're very popular for a long time and carried by alot of well known people. The history helps, marketing, and the "Cult" thing has sure helped them. Still one of the most recognizable knives around. Be safe. ..oh and fun to mod...just saying.
Thank you for making and sharing this video. Sadly, we in the UK can't legally carry our Opinels in a public place without a very good reason, as they can be locked open. I'm wondering whether to buy a No.7 (we also have a maximum blade length of three inches) and try to drill through the Virobloc so I can pin it in place, thus permanently disabling the lock.
Hi George Well it a funny thing but iv'e been getting and buying folder's, fixed points and others since I was a kid. My 1st Opinel was no:6 and iv'e always liked them. Nice work, good mods and sheaths are tidy too. Interesting channel, thanks. I'll be popping by again. 🏴👍👍😁
Thankyou. I prefer the 9...for mods...lol. but I did avcombo saw and blade with a 12 which is awesome for camping. Thanks forcwatchung and commenting. Be safe out tger
@2ndchancegeorge i live in Nz now so there is not the full range. I like all their knives apart from the ver small ones. The French farmers always use the no8 in fact you never see anything else for sale in France. Always no8. I purchashes a Svord knife which i hand crafted myself as a gift but he still uses his Orpinal.
I have several Opinels, some are stainless but I don't really use them, carbon is the honest Opinel with me. My first Opinel has the "fishtail" handle, now as soon as I saw they had a locking closed ring, I took off my ring and cut my own notch in the ring. Most of mine are #8, I have a few #6 but #8 is standard for me. I have a few $10 and made a belt sheath for one.
Interesting video. I bought an Opinel carbon probably no. 8, in the early 90’s in Montana or Wyoming as a souvenir. I had it for a number of years, but I’m not sure where it went. I probably sold it or traded it off many years ago. I would like to see a modern version of this knife made with a black G10 handle, and the lock mechanism made from titanium or anodized aluminum that is loaded with a spring that automatically rotates to the locked position when the blade is open. The spring tension would be strong enough to automatically engage and stay engaged, but light enough to easily close.
My first Opinel was a No. 9 Carbone. That was over 20 years ago. Since then I've added a bunch more. I want to get the Chestnut and Garlic knife and the No. 12 Serrated knife. The Chestnut and Garlic knife has the same blade shape as the modified whittler.
yes both great knives for sure. LO. I am trying to make as many different blade styles as I can. Just enjoy doing it. Thanks for watching, always appreciated
Hi George, love watching your content, especially the Opinel mods, just a thought, have you tried turning one into a viking seax? I think it would look very cool. Keep up the great work. Big Chris, Oxford, UK
@2ndchancegeorge if you do decide to mod a Opinel into a seax, it will need a sheath, and traditionally, the seax was worn "Scout" carry on the small of the back 👍
George , im just a knife bloke and i do love an opinel and I have for nearly fifty years but what i was thinking about is why do so many knife reviewers have a cat. Do they all realise that they are supreme beings. Thanks for the video mate i did like some of your mods.
My number ten and number 8 with fork and spoon attachments are the only knives I’d be gutted to lose. Cheap but I just love em. My no 10 got a fast patina I use them for ALL food inside and out
Greetings from scotland....i think a knife blade like an eagles beak would be good to attempt. Maybe not as curved. Just checked.....its often called a hawksbill blade. Be useful in the garden!
Yep. Thought about that. The issue is the blade sticks out when foldered. Trying to figure out how to mod so its safe and also be able to pull the blade...thinking thinking 🤔. Thanks for the idea, appriciate your support
I've also thought a good Opinel fixed blade should be a thing! Just a good slicey knife that could also do some of the bush things likes baton if I wanted, I've thought about buying a 12 or 13 and just removing the handle turning that into a small full tang fixed blade... wouldn't even be that hard tbh
Hey George ken from WV love your videos. I have started to collect opinal. Love them. Just need to find a good fellow to make me a sheath for my number 9
Opinel, Opinel, Opinel. I agree they are great, especially the No. 9. However, enough is enough; when will we see some of the SPAM knives you plug on your hat and shirts? Seriously, very nice overview of your collection and it’s history.
Lol, any carbon blade will rust if not maintained. Even some of the poorer quality stainless does. Always do regular checks and clean and maintain regularly. Thanks for watching. Greatly appreciate your support
Not long ago I was about to throw away one of my Opinels. Why? It got wet, the handle got puffed up and it wouldn't open. A knife that cannot take moisture is not an EDC-knife. It has now dried out and is almost fine. Still, no more Opinels for me.
As much as I would like to. I cannot. If I do then have to do for all. I barely have time to do my own...lol. but I appreciate your support, I wish I could help out. Be safe and thanks for the confidence you have in my ability. Maybe you should try it yourself. I am self taught and improve or learn everytime .

George you have a nice Opinel Collection! I have two # 8 and # 6 great knives for the price point Yep that’s what I don’t like about the knives they swell because of the weather great Video !
Thankyou, I have since added to it and still going. Lol. Cannot get away from them. Yep, nobody has come up with the perfect solution. Maybe dipping it (handle only) in a wood sealer...you be safe sir
Mary steals the show. As a veterinarian, you got a good sidekick there. ❤
Lol...side kick ....she thinks she's the boss...lol. be safe
Nice. I haveca forge but not used yet. Love em opinels. Appreciate your support. You be safe out there
This is my favorite video!
Lol...hope commented on the give away vid so that are in the drawing. Be safe and appriciate the support
What a great video this was! I appreciate you sharing your ideas and passion. I love when people get creative with their Opinel knives. I hope to see more projects from you in the future :)
I sure there will be more...lol. love doing these. Thanks for the support as always appriciated
Great video and knives! Just got my first Opinel no. 6. I’ve added a lanyard hole and make a neck sheath. Definitely getting more. Probably no. 8 moving forward.
The 8 is a great all round size. There most popular. Thanks for watching always appreciated
Thanks for sharing. Coffee with Opinel by way of 2nd Chance George. Coffee never tasted better!
Yeas...very true, thanks again for the support, you be safe out there
Having a new Opinel on hand, and not knowing yet how to mod this one, that resonates with me. Any Opi that is going in my pocket will get slimmed in some fashion so it doesn.t make a lump.
Lol..I hear you. Cannot handle anything in my pockets 😩. Be safe
Very nice all the mods on the Opinels. I like your wilting blade, sheet foot is my favorite knife form.
Thankyou appriciate the support. Be safe out there
I really like how you did that modified No. 9 👍. Sheaths look fantastic too!!
I spoke too soon…love the little whittler too!!
Lol. Thankyou. Fun projects. Very rewarding. 👍
How about torching the wood with a propane torch to give the wood some dark highlights and then varnish it?
I’m a carbon man!
Good idea. Thankyou. Appreciate the support and you be safe
Good to meet an Opinel lover. Thanks for your video.
Gotta love em Opies for sure. Thanks for watching always appreciated 😁
Good ones, thinking of the chisel, you are right. I need to look for a Tandy close by. Thanks for watching always appriciated
A fish scalier would be nice peace. Maybe with a fish carving in the handle. What do you think?
Ooooh. Good idea. Thankyou. Appreciate the support
I hear you. I just prefer the look very old school. Thanks fir watching and commenting. Always appreciate your support. Be safe
I did not know that. Thats a bummer. Locking it in place may work. That vibro lock it hard stainless.... thanks for watching always appreciated
@@2ndchancegeorge It's always a pleasure to watch one of your videos : )
Thankyou much appreciated
Just found your channel. What a cool cat you are! Thank you so much for sharing.
Lol...thankyou. just some old guy who likes knives and stuff. Appreciate the support. Be safe
Hi George
Well it a funny thing but iv'e been getting and buying folder's, fixed points and others since I was a kid.
My 1st Opinel was no:6 and iv'e always liked them.
Nice work, good mods and sheaths are tidy too.
Interesting channel, thanks. I'll be popping by again.
🏴👍👍😁
Thankyou. Appreciate your support. Be safe
Very interesting and creative mods. Thanks for sharing.
Welcome appriciate the support
Awesome vid, thanks. I have the no8 i got in France years ago and now have the no10, i find the no10 much better for camping.
I haveca couple of Svords. Mice. Made my own wood handles. Be safe
Yep gotta love them opinels. Solid cutters. Thanks for watching always appreciated
That would be very cool. Thanks for watching. Much appreciated 👊
Yep I saw that, lol if I had known that......but hey fun madding these great knives. Thanks for watching be safe
yes both great knives for sure. LO. I am trying to make as many different blade styles as I can. Just enjoy doing it. Thanks for watching, always appreciated
Hey 2cG...Had a thought for a new opinel.......how a dagger blade??...😮😮😊😊😊😊
Yep, the problem is nail nic.....maybe a spear point, streamlined???
@2ndchancegeorge aaahhh...sounds good...we'll be waiting...
Hi George, love watching your content, especially the Opinel mods, just a thought, have you tried turning one into a viking seax? I think it would look very cool.
Keep up the great work. Big Chris, Oxford, UK
Thankyou for the support. I'll have to look that up...being trying to think of a mod. Thankyou
@2ndchancegeorge if you do decide to mod a Opinel into a seax, it will need a sheath, and traditionally, the seax was worn "Scout" carry on the small of the back 👍
I saw that. Interesting project 🤔 thanks
George , im just a knife bloke and i do love an opinel and I have for nearly fifty years but what i was thinking about is why do so many knife reviewers have a cat. Do they all realise that they are supreme beings. I m one like that am i in do have an a human lady but its my Baby cakes Newgate that i love and adore even more than i love 14c28n or a well ground Wharncliffe.
Im not a wierdo am i George.
Thanks for the video mate i did like some of your mods.
Nope, lol. Join the club. Be safe
Keep up the good work. Have a great day
Thankyou, and you be safe
Really impressive! You wanted ideas - Maybe a fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife (Royal Marines commando dagger), that would be so cool
Thankyou. Appreciate the support. Be safe
@@2ndchancegeorgeI edited after your reply sorry!
Actually not a bad idea. It will take alot of work...lol. but hey it would be cool and iconic as well.
My favorite is the gardening knife. Wish it came in more sizes
Yep surprisingly popular. Thanks for watching always appreciated
Very nice video!

You’re welcome!
My number ten and number 8 with fork and spoon attachments are the only knives I’d be gutted to lose. Cheap but I just love em. My no 10 got a fast patina I use them for ALL food inside and out
Yep I hear you. Great for food prep. Thanks for watching and commenting always appreciated

Make Benchmade 940 reverse tanto blade
An opinel mini-tracker would be awesome.
Ahhh good onevthanks, be safe
How often does the blade need to be sharpened?
Depends on use. They hold an edge well for me and when carving etc just touch up with a ceramic rod. Thanks for watching, be safe
Greetings from scotland....i think a knife blade like an eagles beak would be good to attempt. Maybe not as curved. Just checked.....its often called a hawksbill blade. Be useful in the garden!
Oooo. Just got 2 No9...might just do that. thanyou. Appreciate your support
@@2ndchancegeorgeyou're welcome....had to subscribe after that haha!
By the way George, have you seen opinels collection in a wooden case, with knives 2-12 inside, I think. Would make a terrific present.
I love my No 8 Opinel Carbon.
Yep solid knife, 👌
Would like to see a Dagger double sided blade I rekon that'll be great 👍
Yep but you will have add to the tang if button with it. Make it a rat tail. Thanks for watching always appreciated
You are awesome. Lovely video.
Lol...thankyou. much appreciated 👊
Hey George ken from WV love your videos. I have started to collect opinal. Love them. Just need to find a good fellow to make me a sheath for my number 9
Lol...not me, I am not even close to that level where I am comfortable making for others....but working on it. Appriciate your support though. Be safe
Those are really cool knives! 😊
Thankyou have to practice more...well that's my excuse to make more....lol. thankyou
Wow, I don't like opinels because of their blade shape but so inspired by your custom blade shapes.
Lol...therexare alot of things you can up with to change the shapes. Fun projects. Thanks forvwatching always appreciated. Be safe
Love your whittler
Yep my favorite too. Thanks for watching and be safe

Opinel, Opinel, Opinel. I agree they are great, especially the No. 9.
However, enough is enough; when will we see some of the SPAM knives you plug on your hat and shirts?
Seriously, very nice overview of your collection and it’s history.
Lol...hmmmmm. you maybe onto something there...lol. thanks for watching always appriciated 👍
Would you make me a sheath for my number 8? Nice collection😊
Lol...I don't think my sheaths are ready for the outside ...yet. hang on
@@2ndchancegeorge Remember I’m your first customer. I need to take care of my no.8 so I can slice spam.😂😂😂🪖
You at the top of the list...lol. be safe
Do they rust?
Lol, any carbon blade will rust if not maintained. Even some of the poorer quality stainless does. Always do regular checks and clean and maintain regularly. Thanks for watching. Greatly appreciate your support
Thanks very much for the reply, much appreciated. Great videos, i learned a lot thanks.
You are very welcome, be safe
Yahooooo a new video!!!!
Lol...thankyou my dear, be safe
Not long ago I was about to throw away one of my Opinels. Why? It got wet, the handle got puffed up and it wouldn't open. A knife that cannot take moisture is not an EDC-knife. It has now dried out and is almost fine. Still, no more Opinels for me.
I hear you, happens to all wood handle folders. I use melted wax and mineral oil on the pivot. That seems to help alot. Thanks for watching, be safe 👍
I have an old uncle Henry pocket knife could you restore it
As much as I would like to. I cannot. If I do then have to do for all. I barely have time to do my own...lol. but I appreciate your support, I wish I could help out.
Be safe and thanks for the confidence you have in my ability. Maybe you should try it yourself. I am self taught and improve or learn everytime .
Thankyou, true story, alot of people refer to the blade as a Sabre blade, many thanks for watching and be safe😊
@@2ndchancegeorge 👍😊
How about an Opinel stilletto?!
Ooo I like that idea. Thankyou much appreciated. Be safe out there
Nice knives but the blade is too thin for their length.
Lol...for what we use it for. I thunk it was designed to be food prep knife. 😋
If you like a challenge make a German bread knife out of it.
Hammer, need to look the up. Thankyou. Appreciate the support
Actually I more like other wooden folders like MAM or MAIN knives. The handles are from precious wood like babinga or cherry, blade locks with liner locks.
Yep own a few. Thanks for watching
I have seen some of those knives on ebay. I just discovered them about a week ago. Also Creek Stewart has a similar type of knife on his website
