The Alaska cocktail was first mentioned in print in The Savoy Cocktail Book by Harry Craddock (published in the 1930s). A delicious, sweet yet complex and herbal variation on a classic martini.

Another simple 3-ingredient cocktail which works wonders! Really enjoyed this one... a long stir and extra dilution really lets the botanicals of the gin and the sweet, complex, herbal notes of the yellow chartreuse shine. Get my useful links list here: bit.ly/STB-links

Aiyuh I stir a martini for around 1 minute and and old fashioned for 30 seconds... that’s just my preference - the old fashioned will be strong but continue to chill/dilute whilst you drink it..
You were right-couldn’t tell. Held it together very well. I would’ve been on the floor. Cheers 🥳
Oh will be definitely trying this! Great find and video.
I’m going to make this for my family on Christmas Eve so I’m looking forward to how it tastes. Thanks for the video.
Never heard of this drink, lived in Alaska my entire life. I'm going to have to try it now.
Harry said shake not stir, and no bitters... I tried both ways and prefer without. I was using Angostura orange bitters. They seemed to overpower some of the more subtle notes of the Chartreuse, which led to a subdued profile, though not undrinkable. Shaking is a great way to dilute quickly.
i made this...it had a medicinal taste that transitioned to black licorice... not for me lol. i decided to use green chartreuse which i liked more. with green and the same ratio, i recommend a 30 - 35 second stir and use a gin that stands up to the chartreuse. i used beefeater but it seems a little lost and even kind of waters down the drink haha. i would also recommend trying two dashes of bitters as well if you are using green. i think the green over powers the one dash. if no one has named it yet then i call it the "Green Alaska" lol
Pro-tip: a proper Alaska is made with an Old Tom Gin. Hayman's is probably the most widely available, and works well. I'd personally recommend Barr Hill Tom Cat. It's aged about six months, which adds nice barrel notes, and sweetened with honey, which pairs well with yellow Chartruese (which is also sweetened with honey.)
Nice video Steve , I'll give this one a go tonight!
Gin and Chartreuse, this is gonna be good!
Yer! Worked surprisingly well :)
Can you do a video on the different types off glasses they're really confusing lol
Can you please do a video or series of bar terminology. I'm going to start working at one and I feel like clueless.
Swap out gin for Irish whisky and you also get a great cocktail!
Thanks for another great tutorial! I've been thinking about setting up a home bar with all the cocktail essentials. What would you say are the basics you'd need to get going? Also, could we get a shot of the back of your bar?
Awesome! Keep it up steve!
Cheers Austin!
Is it supposed to have this much dilution? I guess I havent mixed this much, my nika glass wasnt so full lol
I've only got Green Charteuse, a bit expensive to buy yellow too... how would you adjust? A bit less & some simple syrup? or is the flavour too different between the two?
I'd still recommending trying it but either drop the 15mL to 10mL OR dilute it further (which is what I would try)... stir for 90-120 seconds I'd think.. let me know how it goes if you do try it..
Perhaps stir for 90 seconds and taste... then you can opt for more stirring/dilution or 5mL of simple once tested..?
Craig Arnold green and yellow are almost the same but green is more potent with more herbs 🌿 and yellow is sweetened with honey. You can do a straight sub if you like green chartreuse or reduce by 1/3 and add 1/3 honey syrup to get close. Will also depend on gin. If using a high proof gin keeping the recipe the same the gin will stand up to the chartreuse. Good luck exploring.
@@stephane.foisy.186 Thanks for the detailed reply. I'll give it a go. Only early Sunday morning here so will have to wait a few hours. It doesn't look like a brunch cocktail :)
Craig Arnold same here. But the sun is shunning and the breeze is cool.
Steve the Bartender I’ve heard people using Benedictine as a substitute for yellow chartreuse. Is that ok too?
Martinis are so fun to make 😂
Pleasantly surprised with this one!
Fresh off those 5 shooters
Right Steve, my OCD can’t cope anymore. It appears you have two bottles of the same alcohol top middle shelf! No other bottle is repeated! Pleas tell me they are slightly different!!! Cheers.
Those are from the “premium liqueurs” selection from Giffard. The Apricot, Banana, Pineapple, Elderflower, Ginger, and maybe Vanilla liqueurs could all look similar depending on the light.
Great video mate
Lol, how did you even have time to watch it!?
@@StevetheBartender_ i don't have to watch your videos to know they are amazing
I just bought gin today for the first time in years. We'll see how that goes...since I got on gin and tonics one time. I haven't been able to drink gin since. LOL!
Just got the Savoy cocktail book, steve! All measurements are in glasses??? What does that refer to?
It refers to an old wine glass measure of 60ml or 2 oz
I can't find yellow chartreuse where I am. Any suggestions to make it drinkable with green?
Green chartreuse is more powerful in flavour & abv than the yellow, as well as some herbs. Try using less in the drink or you could dull down the green by mixing a little sugar syrup with a triple sec & maybe a dash of Galliano. You still want the chartreuse flavour, the others are to tone it down, not to dominate it.
Combine with the green, test, compare & then mix your cocktail.
@@scotchgame279 Thanks for the tips! I'll try that out. :)
what is your fav Whisky Cocktail=
Just wondering :it's probably my middle aged eyes and old glasses.....Does that Chartruse look like the green one to anybody else?
I thought you drank the cocktail with your nose!
Lol I'm from alaska, our cocktail is just plain R&R
R&R?
Pourquoi alaska alors que c'est un alcool Francais?
Je ne sais pas d'où vient le nom.
