      i probably wouldve even be surprised if there was even chunky not-so-smooth scrolling due to the limitations of the spectrum, hombrewers have proven us wrong a lot to this day on many obsolete systems

      @@Freda_Productions wondering if the game in real spectrum casette would run this smooth. I guess yes as the emulator just 'emulates' the clock cycles of the Speccy, but nonetheless it seems crazy how damn perfect this is, I don´t think this scroll can get any better.

    Sometimes it's impossible to believe what Spectrum programmers can do. This port isn't perfect, but technically it looks great: music, smooth scrolling and identical sound effects! Is this some kind of magic?

      This spent many years in planning and making. The author is also responsible for the previous, already forgotten port of SMB to speccy. The techniques themselves were already known, but they need RAM, so the 48K port was scrapped(but 48k prototypes exist)

      @@The_Boctor The old mario "port" from 2002 was made by the same guy, yes. Also he made the recent Speccy improved port of Nothing.

    OMG!!! The underground music is the theme song to Doctor Snuggles. I always think i'm the only one that remembers that show from when I was a kid back in the 80s!!!

      LOL indeed. The same is probably true of many modern Spectrum games. A couple that come to mind are The Sword of Ianna, Mighty Final Fight, or even Manic Pietro :)

      This needs to be checked, whenever it can be run on original 128k hardware, or it uses some pentagon/scorpion mod. Scrolling is way too smooth for genuine speccy :D

      @@Scripture-Man Checked all 3. None has anything special that was not available even on 48K spectrum. Just check Savage 1-2-3, Dan Dare 3, Dynamite Dan 1-2.

      it's very nice pushing the limits of old hardware, uncovering some aspects we though they weren't on it, this shows also the fact most time we don't unleash 100% the power of technology we buy...(and this is true not only about computers).

      The Speccy had a whole assortment of really good platformers though, in fact, I'd say the speccy specialised in good platformers.

      There were big differences, and yes, there was a habit of each screen being a "next room", and the enemies tended to be a bit more random. But then, if you look at something like the ninja turtles game that came out, that was really impressive.

    Wow! It is really amazing what some talented people can do with a spectrum. A 15 year old me would have shit himself if he saw this back in the day.!! Hats off to whoever programmed this. Amazing job.

    FANTASTIC! :) :) :) This is one of my favourite videos ever!
    I've wanted a Spectrum version of Mario for so long. I've often made my own graphics of how Mario could look on the Spectrum. In fact, just a couple of hours ago I was making Mario Bros 2 Spectrum graphics - then this video pops up! :)
    Where to begin praising this amazing game… (It may be a "demo" but it's longer than many full games!) First of all, the music and sound effects are amazing - absolutely spot on. Then there's the brilliant graphics. The loading screen is great too (taken from Mario Sunshine, which came out 20 years later, but never mind).
    I just adore the shading/dithering technique used here. One of my biggest dreams is that the Spectrum could have more brightness levels - and this technique allows 5 levels within a single tile.
    So you have here not only a playable Mario game, but with the shading routine, AND music, and the whole thing STILL runs at 50fps! Amazing! Huge respect to Sergei Smirnov :)

    50 FPS game engine for ZX Spectrum 128K running at 3.5 MHz. Software side-scroller. One-frame logic pipeline. REALLY AWESOME !!! it squeezes at 100% the old Zilog. Incredible scroll and sensitiveness. This graphics in 1986 would be really mind-blowing!!!. I can imagine this game in 80's, a Nintendo-ZX Spectrum +3 Special Edition Pack in a 720kb disquette with a lot of levels and enemies and the Spectrum +3 in the pack. It would had rise the solds of +3 to the skies. You are a really brilliant programmer. So superb Work.

      How good to live in Russia, where the police use Windows from torrents and don't care about c'n'd letters from american and japanese patent trolls.       Both versions are still relatively easy to get. There are like at LEAST four links for the C64 version on archive.org for example. Shitendo only took down tow of the MANY links to the game.
      Hell just download the gamebase isos and you can even get the trained version of the game

    Just shows what potential the ZX Spectrum 128K had as well as other platforms never got to see their full potential.
    Imagine if Nintendo created this back in the day and on the ST or Amiga it would of been just like the Arcade version.

      I thought, why not continue what I wanted to do back in 2002 ... and now, this is a completely new engine written from scratch. In general, it is not just Mario game, but an engine for creating similar arcade games for ZX Spectrum.

      @@Jeansowaty No, I am not using the original source code or its parts. Everything is written anew. And I am planning to develop a fan-version only.
      I prefer to use original 128K machines, and a 100% accurate port is not the option for original ZX Spectrum 128K :)

      You can find another SMB port for ZX Evolution made by AloneCoder earlier, it's running @14Mhz.
      AloneCoder had used a 100% of original sources, rewritten to Z80 CPU, and therefore he kept all the nuances and glitches.

    Woow ,this is mind blowing ,i never knew the ZX spectrum could generate audio as good as a typical famiclone,wich in itself is already close,, i also do like the colission detection under waterwhere you still can just grab mushrooms or break blocks,something sadly not possible in the nes or snes version of that game,am also very stun about that mario picture how it turns out well on the ZX spectrum!!!

      Some guessing:
      All tiles are pre-rotated. Every pair of tiles that are adjacent are rotated together, so tile data can be copied to screen.
      Sprites are ORed to screen, but can be copied instead if target location is empty. This can be decided on a per scanline basis.
      No back buffer, everything painted directly to screen while being aware of horizontal raster position to avoid flickering.
      Sprites are erased by zeroing out previous location, but a data structure is used to minimize cleared area (taking into account overlapping sprites, and new location of sprite).

    Is there something the 128 does that makes this faster (like unrolling large amounts of code or pre-rotated sprites etc into RAM) or does it rely on there being a certain amount of 'blank' tiles onscreen etc?
    Speed is awesome!

    The graphics are clear and the scrolling and animation are very smooth, but there are no backgrounds at all, and is it actually all there too? I was really impressed at first but maybe a little more... nice big mario though. Didn't nintendo recently ban a c64 version?

      @@dmitry_kokhno Соника уже сделали :) Правда, не под классический ZX Spectrum, а под TS-Conf. Там очень мощная работа проделана, сконвертировано графическое ядро целиком. А в отношении текущего движка, я думаю, что под классику можно лепить подобные игры-платформеры, коих на Dendy в свое время было очень много.

      @@SergeiSmirnov да простят меня спектрум-модеры, но я не считаю эву спектрумом, поскольку она лишилась главного, аппаратных ограничений и вышла в другую категорию машин. Это всё-равно что взрослый спортсмен победит в детских соревнованиях, да ещё и при этом будет хвастаться этим. Соник под спектрум, это действительно амбициозная задача, я бы сказал, сверхзадача.

      ZX Spectrum graphics allows only 2 colors within a single 8x8 pixels area.

    when a game sound is played, the uppest voice of the music stops playing. this is because all channels of the 8 bit music generator are full with music voices and there is no separate channel for voices. so when you here a jump sound, you will hear an abcense of a note.

      I agree about the background colour. The water level at 7:02 uses blue instead of black, and to me that looks much more like real Mario. I would have used the blue throughout, with black just for underworld levels.

    This is so much better then the Atari 2600 version, that console was just too limited even at the max of it's powers. But this looks playable

    Amazing job, congrats all involved!! although I agree the colors could have been better, and even better using the interlaced technique recently discovered which allows the speccy to have 128 colors (facebook.com/groups/1066251293516270/), then it would look like a nes or even better.
    But why is the video looking like it is interlaced? is it you tube, the video codec, or some engine feature?

      The reason is that the rendering engine is designed to run at 50 FPS on real hardware. And most video converters and players on a PC display a picture of 60 FPS. Some emulators, however, are able to smooth out flicker, but it will not be as perfect as at 50 frames per second.

      @@SergeiSmirnov just vertical. Please follow that facebook group or this youtube channel (th-cam.com/channels/PAeyJwHf55LgvEP_x5vCFw.htmlvideos) and @george will explain it to you. I think you will find the technic interesting because we are talking of double resolution and almost 128 colors on original 128k spectrum at almost no cpu cost, just memory and the obvious price of managing more graphic data. Your engine could not move a game @50fps but maybe 25-20
