I never escaped when playing this as a kid but I loved the feel and idea of the game :)
I wish they would do a remake of this.
Think they did a PS2 game of the same name. Completely different gameplay. This and Where Time Stood Still were my faves

Used to play this all the time, had lots of fun with the guards uniform and running about in tunnels and evading the search lights at nightime. if I recall correctly you could end game it a few different ways.
My favorite! Along with Warewolves of London
This reminds me of a joke: An Irishman was in a German prisoner-of-war camp, and he asked the gate guard if he could go down to the shop to buy a packet of cigarettes. Unbelievably, the gate guard let him go. Ten minutes later, the Irishman came back with 20 Marlboro...

I managed to escape :) the trick is you need to leave the camp holding the map and compass, and since you need the wire-cutters in your inventory to pass the fence this means you need to drop one of the items outside the camp then go back in for the other one (see end of video)

Yeah man. It's one o' few Speccy games I distinctly remember completing aged about 10.
Either used a poke or I was just more useless than I remember! One missed roll-call and I was in the cooler. First game I played on my own ZX Spectrum, Xmas Day 1988.
I still remember with pleasure the day I finally managed to escape from that prison camp - 32 years ago! :-D
Why has nobody thought to make an updated version

Prisoner of War on PS2 is the closest most modern equivalent.
I used to spend soooo much time playing this but never finished.
Great game and I remember this back when I was a kid.

I escaped once, but I was recaptured because I didn't have the map and compass. I felt cheated.
I escaped in german uniform and was shot for being a german (at least I think so)

I remember Your Sinclair claiming you could find a pole and perform a triple somersault over the fence to escape, haha.
You know what, I offend the internet at times. But was just watching The Great Escape on Sky, thought of many hours at my great cousins Jonathan playing this I used to love going to his house I was only 7 as (I remember Liverpool V Everton FA Cup final when i stayed overnight playing it).
A quick google search and here I am. All the comments say exactly what I am thinking. Such an amazing yet impossible game for a 7 and 9 year old. Great memories thanks.
P.S I must say amazing job escaping but the final pay off was a little underwhelming ha ha

Branching storyline? Scrolling background? Isometric view? Unheard of!
so you didn't need to poison the dogs or give the chocolate to inmate to create chaos during roll call?
I remember trying so hard to figure which two items you need to get the right ending (I couldn't speak english well, so it was even harder)
It didn't help that it wasn't always easy to know what each item was by its picture. I had no idea what the chocolate was meant to be and I thought the bottle with P on it was perfume.

I would never have been able to finish this game had someone I knew not mentioned that damned green key "hidden" underneath the watchtower near the fence.

Escaping was easy, but you always got recaptured without the right gear. Great game. Would make a decent mobile game even now.
Got out at the end with map compass etc...and caught by the dogs who put me in solitary
I rem the excitement of buying a Speccy mag which had the camp map showing you where the things were and a guide. I was so happy as i could not make it passed a day without getting caught. I got the cutters and papers and through the fence i went. Hurray i was FREE. Nope got caught as no compass. Gutted i was.
One of the very best Speccy games. Spent LONG hours on it.
8Bit Rider it was great, I used to make game maps in those days, now days it’s so linear
this game is computer art..., every player nows the feeling when you play this game...ulfortunatly it was so difficult that playing it became boring after some times...

Yeah the Spectrum excelled at these kinds of graphics, it could display them at speed.
I tried trapping a fellow prisoner from leaving a room until night time..but the game crashed just as the bell for roll call went off. I always wondered what would have happened if I'd been successfully and done it lol
I always played with O/P/Q/A/Space.
This was the only computer game my late father (child of the 40's) ever got into. Even I played it for ours as a kid. Without seeing the walkthrough I wouldn't have a clue how to complete it
This and Where Time Stood Still were the arguably the best games on Spectrum. Spent ages playing both of them but never completed them.
Yeah, these are masterpieces of game design, asset design and programming showing what can done using extremely limited computing resources of the day. It is staggering how much story and atmosphere and sheer emergent gameplay these games achieved. Definitely right up there with Elite and Lords of Midnight.
Even though I knew about using the spade to access the exercise yard via tunnel I escaped the harder way with more chance of being caught at the area at 28:28 in the video. That way there are two sets of fences to cut through in sucession. This means the spade isn't compulsory for completion and all you items you need can be found in red cross parcels.
for a successful escape you still need the papers though, otherwise you get recaptured
@@kenshironeo7254 I've just discovered, in another video, that it is possible to escape (with the same successful ending) with the compass and the bag of money, instead of papers. I wonder how many other little secrets this game has...
@@lechl8502 I completed the game using that method too. I’m guessing the money bag is used to bribe the guards as you escape.
I always wondered what the money bag was for. Also the poison. Must be so many variables
I loved this game, one of the few I did complete. I think it was Your Sinclair that did the map as a big pull out special one Christmas issue. :)

When I used to play it I found a secret message on an old cine reel, when you played the reel the message said "he takes the bribe and acts as a decoy".....but people Ive spoke to who played this have never come across this reel... 🤔
I could never work it out as a little kid. The guard dog used to always get me. Haha
Why on earth did you have to collect and stash all those objects in the tunnel (like the radio, food, pepper, uniform etc) that were never used in game ?
Man,who didn't fall in love with this game as soon they started to play it? I didn't get very far either but it just sucked you in to it.

Used to play this a lot even though i didnt have a clue wot I was doing ha. My first computer was zx spectrum black plastic keys version back in 1986. I was 10. Didn't know wot to do on a lot of my games back in those days. Had a good collection though. Miss my spectrum. Wish I still had it. 😢
@Gerry S.S no one of my family members borrowed it for a while in the early 90s. When I asked for it back they told me they'd sold it. Don't understand why they did that. I probably would have had it to this day.
I remember playing this back in the day, but never managed to escape. Now seeing what happened after the escape I expected more, it was a bit of a let down. Surely a screen of you being commended back in Blighty with some medal ceremony or at least a narrative of what happened after (just a page pic, nothing elaborate of course) would have been at least reward for what was quite a taxing escape should have been put in place!!! Great to see how to complete it though. Loved the game, it was challenging, but as a kid after a while I guess I got bored and gave up. Have positive memories of the game though and great to see it here. I think it was one of the better isometric games that you had to use your brain to get anywhere rather than just running around zapping or avoiding things.
A lot of Spectrum games were like that - the better the main game, the less memory available for a decent end screen, Marsport being a classic example
My dad had this game on the Spectrum ZX, I used to watch him play it all the time, though he did struggle with it. So many memories just listening to the sounds... Not sure what year this game came out I think my earliest memories of watching my dad play was when I was about 5 lol

Есть еще локации которые тут не были показаны. Там еще есть предметы. Так же не использованы некоторые предметы. Например Бутылочка+Еда=будет отравленая еда.(В игре можно комбинировать). Хорошо приманивает собак. Предпоследний предмет(по почте) используется в комнате героя. (с буржуйкой и секретным ходом). Ну и по мелочи еще. А в общем да. Прошел. Не поймали и ладно.

Алексей Савенков Не удивительно. Я убегал но меня ловили. Тогда еще мало понимал что к чему и считал что все таки прошел. Потом только понял что лажа. А про комбинирование даже в вики ничего не написанно было до сих пор. Я там чуть подправил. Мало кто знает про это. Игра шедевр для спектрума. Обажал ее и еще Last Ninja 2. В похожей стилистике. Ох были времена. Хоть бы кто занялся ремейком. Всякую дрянь делают.

Alex Mitrofanov Не то слово!. Как же бережно и внимательно в те времена относились друг к другу-геймер и разработчик.У меня была коллекция из нескольких тысяч игр на Спектрум. Целый стелаж с кассетами)). И что интересно, "клонов" было ой как мало в те времена. Каждая игра индивидуальна была. И каждую помню по названию и прохождению, как вчера.. А теперь...куча мусора похожего одно на другое..Эх.
Еще забыл добавить, что самый первый предмет который приходит на почту- это мешочек с провизией или деньги или еще что( каждый называет по своему). Но вся суть в том, что это еще один ключевой предмет в игре. Можно убежать имея компас и этот предмет за место карты-документов как было в этом прохождении. Это добавило чуть смуты в ряды игроков так как считалось что ключевых предметов 2 только.
I have a memory of going to my cousins house and him pulling a massive map he had made from under his bed of this game.
Loved this game all those years ago, no waynofnknsowing where all the items were, won the game a few times. I liked the newer version that came out on pc :)
I never escaped! I'll have to get it out the loft and see if it still works (do they even connect to TV's now?)
You can also play it on an emulator on your PC. To connect it to your TV it goes into the "Antenna in" port which TVs should still have.
Seem to be so many things picked up and put in the tunnel but never used?

This was ported horribly onto c64 as many games were. C64 version vastly slower than this, but despite that I loved this weird, almost incomprehensible game. Used to love wearing the guard's uniform and roleplaying.

Loved this game! I never fully completed it the correct way but did escape the camp at least.
I always thought the guards searched for you if you missed roll-call & if caught, you were thrown into solitary.
i played so many times on my c64...
I loved this game (imagine how little they had to create the atmosphere...) but probably still couldn't figure out what the heck is going on without this video. I even made a map but got forever-jailed still :-D
asa kid i kept thinking for years there were several ways to escape. I never figured how to escape until I checked walkthroughs years later...but overall there is only really one way to get out

bought this game Xmas '86, was so excited to play it as it had great reviews in all the ZX mags
had this on spectrum +3 never escaped... stole the officers uniform tho.... found myself lost in tunnels.. or in prision for ever lol
For me , this was the very 1st real masterpiece with complex mechanics i´ve ever played

Memories Bought this when i was around 10 at a carboot sale in the 1980s
Someting I only discovered 30 years after first playing this: if you walk up to the gatehouse (the building with the guard patroling on the roof) whilst whilst wearing the uniform and carrying the papers and use the papers, the guards will literally let you out the camp! You pop out the door that looks a bit like it is made of corregated steel...
It doesn't help much though, as trying to escape in the uniform gets you shot - but it does mean you only have to cut the fence once (to drop the compass), the second time you can just waltz out the front door. The compass + money bag is also an acceptable escape combo, IIRC.
I beleive the radio was supposed to be a way to help resotre moral, rather than just a red herring, but it never found how to use it (I tried disassembling to look for text strings but never found any). I also never managed to get poisioning the dogs with the posion food to ever work....
The poison only works at the end of the other tunnel I found

@@miguelsantander6083 I remember using it with food (must have both in inventory), the food turns red (poisoned) and when dropped in the fence with dogs, if a dog goes over it stops "dead" (doesn't move anymore), this is just how I remember from 30 years ago...
I had this on the C64. It was a good game, but wasn't as speedy as this. Isometric 3D was not a strong point for the breadbin. ;)

awesome game, had so much fun I didn't want to escape. it was fairly easy though, once you had the guard uniform , wire cutters and poison meat all stored in th
e tunnel. where time stood still was a lot harder.
+qazokm2. I seem to remember you can use chocolate found in a red cross parcel as a bribe to get one of the other prisoners to get you over the fence.
Not quite, but he'll start acting up and attract the attention of the guards, distracting them from what you're doing. (Due to a bug, you can also offer it to a stove in your room.)
Some cheat is being used here. Missed roll call & nothing happened when caught by camp commander
I've beat it many times, but still - some of the items left unused...
