I was working at 430 and around 50% airflow, and was having trouble. Hi Steve!! Thank you for your amazing videos! I learn a lot with you! Can I ask you where you bought the microscope arm? I'm looking for something similar for mine :D
I could have sworn you picked the wrong Regulator, you've chosen the Richtek RT9193, but CU7BA would relate to the Silergy SY8009B. Looking at the pinouts in the datasheets seems to confirm it. I don't know how this is managing to function as it stands. It's a hard task to identify these little packages and often worth confirming with multiple data sources. s-manuals has an smd markings section. You got it working all the same but I'm gonna lose sleep about what is going on in that circuit. Looking forward to part 3.
Thanks G B! The Regulator in there now is actually the RT8097C. I chose it because the pinouts seemed to correspond directly to the SY8009B (aside from the NC, but I figured the NC didn't matter as it wasn't actually in contact with the board anyhow). I think the Richtek had a Power Good indicator on that NC pin. I did actually order the SY8009B from China, but it hadn't arrived by the time I did the video (it actually came in the post yesterday!) I'm happy that it's working, but I definitely think I got lucky with the chips. @@StezStixFix haha fair enough mate, sorry either way though. If I'd have known I'd have gone for 15 mins earlier. You'll find the algorithm will push a premiere to more viewers *after* the video ends. @@StezStixFix No worries mate, it says my premiere has had 4.4k views compared to 1.9k on my previous video in the same time frame so that in turn pushes more viewers by YT recommending it, thinking it's more popular. TH-cam is so easy to manipulate lol
Thanks David! I got lucky I think, although I did spend a good few hours looking through and trying to work out which ones seemed to fit the specs of the rest of the board. I've learnt a lot along the way on this one, so I'm very happy! 😊
Hi Stez, could you please make a video to explain how you found the correct IC's for the Retron 5. I used the smd.yooneed.one website and searched by socket type but came up blank when comparing the IC's on the website to the IC's you purchased from digikey. This would help your watchers a lot as I often find damaged IC's but unable to identify them. Thanks in advance. 👍
@@davidroberts2920 Hi David, I'll definitely try! I had a couple of comments on the first video, which pointed me towards a couple of possible IC's, but I could only get them from China, so I looked for UK stocked alternatives with the same spec and same pinouts. It was a bit of luck and some good knowledge from viewers that got me there!
Hey Steve I created a 3d print for a box to fit under the scope nice and snug that you use well because I bought one too ( nice pieces of kit) you can put all the cables in and add a usb power bank or 4 18650’s to make it portable if your interested let me know
I realize this is an older video, but when you showed the part(s) you ordered, there was a link on the right-hand side of the page to allow you to view the datasheet. Maybe you should open the datasheet and see what it is and how to power it. That way you could possible mock up a test setup to check good from bad. Just an idea... Thumbs Up!
Interesting that the later models of RETRON 5 have rubber caps for the controller ports to avoid dust from getting in. The earlier US releases did not come with them.
Whenever I have to go in blind I just buy a fully working one to test voltages. Assuming no schematic can be found. It can always be resold to recoup cost if need be.
Thanks Lee! 👍 They're pretty good, in that it feels a bit more authentic using an original cartridge, but definitely the best thing about them is being able to use the original controllers. I don't think the cartridge slots are particularly good quality either, and I think they will wear out/bend/snap/explode over time! 😲
I have a Retron 5 with the exact same symptoms... In my own research, I got this: Power Distribution IC = SY6288AAC, marking matches the DF, you have NCP380HSN05AAT1G. I compared the datasheets they work similar Supervisor/Reset IC = SY6280AAC, matches my exact marking CO4NC, you have MCP1321T-29LE/OT. Your chip obviously does the trick, but it does not look right te me because there is a large capacitor at the output. This makes no sense for you chip, because this is the reset line... Glad you pointed out the RT8097CHGE, I would have had no idea about that one...
Have you got links for the 3 parts you used? My retron 5 seems to having the same issues where the power led comes on but nothing else happens! Either that or if you fancy me paying for it to get fixed for another video?
Hi Kevin, the parts are in the description I believe. I got mine from Digi-Key, so worth having a look on there. Although, your problem does sound to be different if you've got a constant power light. Perhaps your issue is related to the HDMI port? Worth having a look at that and giving it a good clean too. I found that mine was quite particular about the port being super clean before displaying an image.
I don't really understand anything that's being said here but it's entertaining. But why does the Sot 23 6, only have 5 solder connection points for 6 legs?
That's a very good shout Todd. It didn't at the time but, I've just watched my video back and the input on my TV changes to 720p and 60Hz - so you're absolutely spot on! 👍
I have a pair of beats by Drey studio head phones that was listed as untested and nothing was wrong they work great i also have an mp3 player that was listed the same and it works.
Stupid novice question: When you test those SMD caps around the destroyed transistors, are you on continuity mode or diode mode? And is there a difference? Please clarify - I truly want to learn. Thank you kindly
I tend to use continuity so I get a beep. You can use diode mode, and it'll read as zero if it's direct to ground, but my multimeter doesn't beep on that setting. 👍
Hello there, thanks for the video I have the same two chips blown as you, but before i buy them i checked if i have the short at the back like you, ans i do, so did you figure out what was causing it or no, i don't want to buy the part to see them blown again if the short is from something else. Thank you Edit: nevermind, i found the part 3, really disapointed that it was the big chip. I'll have to find a power board then, which is not easy
Thanks Hamza. Yeah, shame it was the CPU. Seems like a lot of these boards get fried one way or another. I'd like to try and get a replacement CPU as you can pick them up pretty cheap, but I'm just not sure if it needs custom firmware, or even how to flash that. I'll be looking more into it at some point though! 👍
Does anyone know what type of pcb ribbon this console has? I’m trying to build a gaming unit but I need the controller input to be redirected to another location of the unit. But I need longer pcb ribbons.
i bet this retron got messed up like mine did, i have an 5v AC adapter that has more amps than the retron 5 ac adapter and plugged it into the retron by mistake, no lights no power now. pretty sure i fried one of those little guys, and i don't have the tools to be able to fix that for sure
for reference, what happens when i try to power on with the right AC adapter now, i get a faint flash of light behind the power button and the regular 5 lights don't react at all
Hi William, I think you're right. The no power thing does seem to be a common problem with these, and I've heard that they are fussy about their power supplies. I bet loads of these have gone to landfill for that very reason.
@@StezStixFix right, i'm waiting on a new one atm, this one has a CFW on it that mancloud released, it used to have the legit retron labo CFW on it too lmao. i would give up on retron and moved on had i not turned the retron 5 controller into an wireless arcade stick

Hey Phil. Don't worry about it mate, I got more viewers than I thought I would, so I'm happy. It was the first time trying out a Premiere, so I didn't really know what I was doing anyhow! 😁
@@StezStixFix haha fair enough mate, sorry either way though. If I'd have known I'd have gone for 15 mins earlier. You'll find the algorithm will push a premiere to more viewers *after* the video ends. Because people tend to click on then off it boosts stats and forces youtube to push it to more people, so it's win win lol
@@TheCod3r Aaah, yeah that makes sense. Thanks for the heads up mate! 👍
@@StezStixFix No worries mate, it says my premiere has had 4.4k views compared to 1.9k on my previous video in the same time frame so that in turn pushes more viewers by YT recommending it, thinking it's more popular. TH-cam is so easy to manipulate lol
@@StezStixFix You got a new sub here fella - great channel - keep bringing the content!
Just saved one! Thanks for sharing this knowledge.
Well done m8 nice fix and good to see that you managed to track down the part required. 👍
Thanks David! I got lucky I think, although I did spend a good few hours looking through and trying to work out which ones seemed to fit the specs of the rest of the board. I've learnt a lot along the way on this one, so I'm very happy! 😊
Looking forward to part 3!
Good Man, it would be much appreciated. 👍👍
Hey Steve I created a 3d print for a box to fit under the scope nice and snug that you use well because I bought one too ( nice pieces of kit) you can put all the cables in and add a usb power bank or 4 18650’s to make it portable if your interested let me know
I come for the "Nice!" I stay for the "Get in there!"
Nice fix mate!
Thanks Simion! 👍
It’s alive! It’s alive!
😁🤣 Thanks Andy!
Nicely done mate, are those things actually Amy good? Looking forward to seeing you get the other one working (I have faith)
Thanks Lee! 👍 They're pretty good, in that it feels a bit more authentic using an original cartridge, but definitely the best thing about them is being able to use the original controllers. I don't think the cartridge slots are particularly good quality either, and I think they will wear out/bend/snap/explode over time! 😲
Hi. What stand are you using with your Adonstar? I've been looking for a more flexible stand for my Adonstar AD409.
Great video as always
Thanks Froz! 👍
Just the man I been to carboot sale this morning bought psp working fine 5mim now it will not power up what will change to repair it
Hi Robert, I would take a guess that it will be the battery. They are quite old now and they tend to fail. See if you can try a new battery in it! 👍
@@StezStixFix thanks buddy .
What’s the name of that blue plate with the the six pegs that you use to hold the circuit board still?
Hehe famous Eddie quote about upside down eyes... :P
😁 glad someone spotted that! 😂
nice going great job
Nice work!
Thanks Micro! I really enjoyed this one 😊
I have a Retron 5 with the exact same symptoms...
In my own research, I got this:
Power Distribution IC = SY6288AAC, marking matches the DF, you have NCP380HSN05AAT1G. I compared the datasheets they work similar
Supervisor/Reset IC = SY6280AAC, matches my exact marking CO4NC, you have MCP1321T-29LE/OT. Your chip obviously does the trick, but it does not look right te me because there is a large capacitor at the output. This makes no sense for you chip, because this is the reset line...
Glad you pointed out the RT8097CHGE, I would have had no idea about that one...
So I can confirm that the Retron 5 is working with the chips mentioned above.
Great t shirt I've got one myself there best album
Have you got links for the 3 parts you used? My retron 5 seems to having the same issues where the power led comes on but nothing else happens! Either that or if you fancy me paying for it to get fixed for another video?
Hi Kevin, the parts are in the description I believe. I got mine from Digi-Key, so worth having a look on there. Although, your problem does sound to be different if you've got a constant power light. Perhaps your issue is related to the HDMI port? Worth having a look at that and giving it a good clean too. I found that mine was quite particular about the port being super clean before displaying an image.
hi, i have to fix mine too, where can i find the MCP1321T-29LE/OT ?? out of stock all over the world :/
Been trying to fix one If these and had the same component blow. Replaced them and still haven't had any luck. There's no shorts so idk what to do
I don't really understand anything that's being said here but it's entertaining. But why does the Sot 23 6, only have 5 solder connection points for 6 legs?
Excellent video you deserve it nice fix
Thanks Afrim, really appreciate that! 👍
GET IN THERE!
What are those board holder studs?
Brilliant 😉👍
At 9:57 the component in the upper left looks fried to me
o my god, o my god, o my fuc*ing god is a message worthy of success. Go ahead, look at it with great pleasure. Big like
Haha, thanks Lubomir 😊 really appreciate that.
Sounds like Sonic was playing at 60hz. Did it seem fast to you?
That's a very good shout Todd. It didn't at the time but, I've just watched my video back and the input on my TV changes to 720p and 60Hz - so you're absolutely spot on! 👍
I have a pair of beats by Drey studio head phones that was listed as untested and nothing was wrong they work great i also have an mp3 player that was listed the same and it works.
i had one of these- piece of junk- glad to see its fixable now
Yeah, have to agree with you there. Not a great piece of kit at all!
27:30 Was that an Ed Edmundsson reference?!
i thing you should by a voltage injection tool it is very helpful
Stupid novice question: When you test those SMD caps around the destroyed transistors, are you on continuity mode or diode mode? And is there a difference? Please clarify - I truly want to learn. Thank you kindly
I tend to use continuity so I get a beep. You can use diode mode, and it'll read as zero if it's direct to ground, but my multimeter doesn't beep on that setting. 👍
1st class video to watch thank you take care kind regards from me kenneth
Steve mate.. life is far too short pardon the pun. Great entertainment..
I have the same problem with mine do you fix them for others?
Hello there, thanks for the video
I have the same two chips blown as you, but before i buy them i checked if i have the short at the back like you, ans i do, so did you figure out what was causing it or no, i don't want to buy the part to see them blown again if the short is from something else. Thank you
Edit: nevermind, i found the part 3, really disapointed that it was the big chip.
Nice!
Thanks! 😊
Oh my goodness, we've been sleep soldering again!🤣
Can I ask what the Gel stuff is that you use when removing components?
@DemonsCyclesIBZ uk viewer... just thought was maybe a American product 🤔 😁
Good job
Does anyone know what type of pcb ribbon this console has? I’m trying to build a gaming unit but I need the controller input to be redirected to another location of the unit. But I need longer pcb ribbons.
16:42 - To the left of the letter T is a hole in the chip))
Great feeling it is... Now if Vince starts cursing on his videos... it has to be a special kind of fix lol
😂 haha. Yeah, I couldn't help the cursing on this one, it was an emotional moment! 😁
All this hard work, and when you finally fix it you'll see how awful the input lag is on the retron is and how utterly unusable that makes it.
Was it a murican retcon?
i bet this retron got messed up like mine did, i have an 5v AC adapter that has more amps than the retron 5 ac adapter and plugged it into the retron by mistake, no lights no power now. pretty sure i fried one of those little guys, and i don't have the tools to be able to fix that for sure
for reference, what happens when i try to power on with the right AC adapter now, i get a faint flash of light behind the power button and the regular 5 lights don't react at all
Hi William, I think you're right.
Could you post up the parts you used
Hi krackpack, Sure. I'll update the description with the IC's I tried... 👍
@@StezStixFix thanks
Is it really worth reparing mine fail under 200h game play ? The emulation is no better then a pie model 1
hy5418-001 retron 5 controller board ?
Loved the swearing 😅😅😅
Beastie boys nice :)
