- This year has been a busy year, and unfortunately my garden has been somewhat neglected. Hopefully I can make something of it as the year progresses.

Nuwe Blare Homestead is a homestead in the Arizona desert. We (try to) grow our own food with our desert garden, we raise chickens and ducks for eggs, and we build the things we need. Homesteading in the harsh Arizona climate is not easy, but we are learning how to use the resources we have at hand to accomplish our goals. We're a South African-American family, so we occasionally share recipes for South African dishes.

Bill and Martha had a peach tree when I married Eva and it produced tons of fruit. It got so heavy, the branches broke and really damaged the tree. They were so sweet and they did not have a lot of bug pressure, but the birds ate a lot of them and damaged lots more. They have to tent it with a mesh cover to protect them.
Yeah, we're thankfully light on the bugs here, but the birds to like the peaches! Thankfully our older peach tree is so productive that the birds end up eating less than 5% of the peaches.

Still think you are doing great job keep up the great work.
Also might suggest looking for pill bugs they love the wood chips. I have had them eat many many seedlings to the ground in short time!

Wanted to also say you have been a light at the end of the tunnel at times for us.
We had such a great crop of watermelon last year, I can't wait for an even better one this year! And I've never grown okra before, but I've had Uncle Kelly's grilled okra, and it was AMAZING, so I had to grow some myself.
Also, next time you're down in the area, you MUST stop by, we'd love to have you over!
@@NuweBlareHomestead Oh yeah of course If things work out might be getting there within 6 months.. If we do not get evicted if we do going to put up some tents on land and live there!

I had a dickens of a time getting my peppers to come up this year...I had to replant twice to get the total plants I need (around 50). I messed up and put too much worm tea on my baby plants and almost killed everything! I have managed to come away with 54 tomato plants and maybe 60 peppers. My potatoes also took a hit...I had maybe 10 percent rot or get eaten by slugs or grubs. I have replanted and have around 175 plants in the ground. We have had a few pots of greens and a hundred radish that were really good. So jealous over your apple trees! I have two trees that are 3 years old and maybe have 6 or 8 total on one tree. I don't really know what is up with the fruit trees...they are pretty tall and full, but just don't want to bloom...I planted two pear, two peach and two more apple trees this spring, they seem to have survived except for the Asian pear...it has yet to get a leaf, but still seems to be green. Will wait and see. I think your orchard is doing great!
Oh no! I'm glad to hear things are looking up. David the Good has a video on getting fruit trees to bear early and well: th-cam.com/video/V393C53n9A4/w-d-xo.html -- I kinda followed this and drove organic fertilizer stakes into the ground around each tree before they leafed out, and I think that might have helped.
Could you use a motion camera to get pics of the critter destroying your plants? I have been thinking of getting some type of motion triggered alarm or a camera to monitor the garden at night...try to catch the crime being committed in real time.
Yeah, I could. I have a cheap game camera that might work. Having said that, things seem to have calmed down, and a lot of things are now growing nicely. We actually just went out there this evening and planted some more stuff. Trying to recover the garden :-)
