    Enjoyed the video. Always glad to see a Wisconsin person on TH-cam. I have rhubarb for years and I really didn't know what to do with the plants when they need dividing. My mom just took a shovel and sliced off chunks. I have a very large one and I will have to divide some of it. You have great soil. In SE WIS, we have so much clay. But rhubarb seems to be pretty indestructible. I try to give away plants and people tell me it always dies. I don't know how you can kill it. I have had plants in total shade and they don't die. But they don't produce either.

    Great content. I've divided & sold rhubarb crowns (different patches each year). I also started a lot from saved seed from old homesteads. Year 1: seeded in pots, year 2: nursery bed & then that autumn, sell as young crowns or plant in permanant (fence row) location.

    Good to know! Thank you. I’ll have to collect all our saw dust and use it as mulch to keep the weeds and grass out. Definitely am struggling with that so I hope it works!

    I noticed you don't bother to cut off your flower stalks so that the plants will put more energy into growing edible stalks - why not?

    • @ryankolodziej6732
      @ryankolodziej6732 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I actually don't see any evidence in the field to support the early removal of the seed heads. My observations are that pulling the bolted stalks disrupts the surrounding stalks causing damage and wilting. We get a very uniform recovery by picking the entire plant including the bolts all at the same time.
      Like timing harvest of other plants with flowering. I believe that the 1st seasonal picking of your rhubarb should coincide with the flowering. Ideally sometime during the bloom but before it goes to seed.

    • @sdthyng
      @sdthyng ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@ryankolodziej6732 That is a very interesting observation. Most home growing videos strongly advise cutting out the flower stalk as soon as it appears. I will try both methods to see which works best for me.

      @@ryankolodziej6732 WOW I never heard this before. I just cut off the flowers, but also harvested the stalks that were ready. Last year I did the same thing, ended up with 3 harvests of stalks. I don't harvest the whole planet.
      But this year I have to divide some of the plants.

    • @robertwren8878
      @robertwren8878 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Your growing rhubarb not flowers the energy is going into producing seed not stalks as with any plant! Remove the flower head as soon as it appears,then more stalks push up to try to produce seeds then you get more rhubarb and keep it watered and fed using rainwater. If you let it produce seed the plant is finished because it needs to store as much from the plant at the end of the season for next years crop so just take from it what you need,the bigger the leaves and stalks the more energy will be stored for the following year!

    This plant roots very easily from even a single talk peeled off of the crown, and i have seen a decent root system on a single complete stalk in only a few weeks when the cuttings are rooted in a pasteurized 50/50 mix of sand and vermiculite. Plants rooted this way may take jp to two years to begin bountiful production.
