    As a kid I was very concerned about me appearance, I wore gant shirts, had brown and black wingtips and so on. I joined the marines then the army and retired as a first sergeant. Taught school for a period, drove a truck. Now I’m retired and 71 yrs old. I enjoy your channel and it is helping me become a better dresser and person. Stay calm and maintain the fire.

    Antonio, videos like this are why I began following your channel. I love picking up knowledge about things like leather, denim, and color matching. But all of the videos now (understandably) have sponsors thrown in the middle. It was refreshing to not have this video sponsored other than you promoting your own brand. Love the content, keep up the good work!

      W1ck3d Truth I've been searching for similar information, and I've found that doing research across multiple platforms has been the most helpful. If I were you, I would spend a good amount of time tagging some key words to the style that you fancy, and then search for acceptable examples using those terms. I looked online, in books, and even watched a few documentaries and movies to narrow my search. I also kept an eye out in my everyday life for good examples of what I wanted on others. Also, by giving friends and family examples of what you want, they can further help you identify what it is you're looking for. Sorry for the essay lol.

    Nice video! Thank you for not repeating some of the common myth out there! One of my biggest frustrations is debunking to my customers some of the misconceptions and oversimplification in my industry. I appreciate how you said that the different types aren’t really superior to others like lots of folks imply, much more a matter of taste for example: nubuck (top grain) vs Full Grain vs Embossed vs Suede. Only thing I’d be careful of would be to imply that “genuine leather” is always the split part, plenty of companies use the term as a simple descriptive for real. Red Wing Heritage Beckmans are a great example of “Genuine Leather” stamped on something high quality (and not suede). I’ve weirder with leather my whole life and this one of the most accurate videos I’ve seen posted.

    Great video. When grading the leather quality and stating that 1 and 2nd grade leather are waterproof/resistant, does that mean that whenever we're told to avoid water with a product then it's 3/4rd grade leather? Seems odd since they usually recommend total dryness at all times for even the most premium leatherware :S

    Hello Antonio. I have difficult time trying to differentiate full grain, top grain and pepbled grain. I cant ask the shop owners either because fhey most of the time they dont even know these terms ( well we have a lot of unprofessional shopkeepers who dont even know what they are selling), and secondly, I dont trust them. I have read a lot of guides telling me to look for "pores" and "scars", however this features are very hard to spot. Can you please tell me how can you tell full grain leathet apart? I am ever grateful

    • @wilsjane
      @wilsjane 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thickness of leather varies a lot across the hide and full grain used for clothing also needs to come from a young animal, in order not to be like the sole of a shoe.
      In order to be environmentally acceptable and ethical, most cowhide is a bi-product of the meat industry, so it is too thick for anything except biker racing suits.
      Top grain is therefore a better option, since the outer layer is the strongest and the thickness is uniform in the split.
      All surface leather has a slight natural grain, but any pebbling is done by heated rollers. The problem is that this leather is often poor quality and the finish can be covering up a multitude of problems. Wile it is considered acceptable to use fillers to cover up minor injury scars, some of this leather had deep scars and even rips.
      When using unfilled leather, the clothing manufacturer has to cut around any damage, so the price is increased,. However it is generally worthwhile and the manufacturer can plan the cuts by using damaged areas to make waistbands and trims, using the leather right up to the damage and minimizing waste.
      Genuine leather is the second split, so is weaker and far less durable. Pebbled leather is similar. Both are OK for lightweight fashion items, but unsuitable for almost anything else.
      When buying a jacket, the most important thing is honesty. If you pay $50, you are not going to expect top quality, but you should expect the quality to be consistent with the price tag. Sadly, this is not always the case.
      The other thing is the quality of the leather itself and the tanning and dying, which should by drum dyed rather than the dye sprayed onto the surface. Checking the colour of the inside of the leather will avoid this pitfall.
      In a nutshell, it is a minefield and you need to be very careful before you hand over your money. But you do not have to pay a fortune just for a label.
      India produce some top quality leather, so do not let that put you off, but again they also produce some rubbish. China have a poor reputation for quality leather.
      I hope that some of this has helped. rather than leaving you more confused.
      Regards, Wills.
