    I have a DX-6 transmitter so I didn't have the extra channel for safe with out needing to tie it to my gear. I might have been happy with that except safe could only be "on" with the gear up and could only be "off" with the gear down because of the logic used to activate SAFE in the receiver… which was the opposite of what I wanted and reversing the gain for the servo didn't reverse the SAFE setting. So after I watched this I ordered another y-cable and used Jim's trick on my 1.2M P-51D, it worked like a charm. Highly recommended if you only have a 6 channel radio and want to put SAFE on a discreet channel. It also just makes getting ready to land easier because its all on one switch like Jim said.
    Although I don't think he mentions it in the video, it also allows half-flaps with the gear up. You just have to cycle through the 3-way to get the combination of gear up or down and flap setting you want. Then you can use the free channel for SAFE.

    Much help problem solved for me! Thank you. Now I'm able to have a designated SAFE switch w/out having it interfere with my flaps or retracts on my DX6.

    A dx6 will work with the spitfire's safe Rx with flaps and gear. The included directions outline how. It's not as flexible as using a dx9 but it will work. I don't have a dx6 so I can't comment on safe selects setup steps with one. It is very different than all the other safe Rx setup procedures.

    I'm purchasing a Spektrum DX8 G2 that has EIGHT channels. Will that work with flaps and gear??

  • @Baritonesinger1
    @Baritonesinger1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Even though Jim stated that you can set up using DX6 in the beginning of his video, you cannot because a DX6 is only six channels and you need atleast seven to program AUX2.

      I just got the new eflite p51d 1.2m in today and paired it with my dx6. Retracts and flaps on 3 position switch d and safe on it's own switch. I had to use a y harness from the 5th channel on my reciever (leaving the 6th slot on the reciever open) to link both flaps and gear but it works the same as in this video.

    How do you wire the flaps and retracts into one channel? So flaps are on a Y, landing gear on a 3-y, then connect those into a Y into a single channel? Sheesh…?

    Im looking to free up a channel on the eflight p-47 razorback, it has safe, but i want to add a pan servo for fpv in the cockpit, does this free up a channel by combining flaps and gear via Y harness?

    Hi Jim its Juan here again. Jim thank goodness I subscribed to your channel and as usual your videos are so.......well I dont know the word in english, illustrative?.....Anyway I have the dx7 and I think that your instructions will also work on this tx as they do on dx6 dx9 and dx18 if I am not mistaken.. And Jim since I am using the apprentice receiver on my Dallas Doll, do you think that I could do the same programming on the receiver and have the flaps and gear working the same way as in your F-86?

    • @JRLaffertyJr

    Hi. How did you get the ESC working with the SAFE receiver?

    • @JRLaffertyJr
      @JRLaffertyJr  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the esc. Some, like Dynam's brand (Detrum) will not arm the esc. Some work with no issue like parkzone and spektrum brand. Some need a switch added between the throttle lead and the rx that stays off when you first plug battery in, then switch on when it starts beeping. The latter is what I had to do with the Freewing Sabre.

    Great video as always.
    When setting flaps with this method, using SAFE, do you find you have to add mixing for the elevator as warned about in the Carbon Z Cub manual? I would imagine the SAFE receiver would compensate in beginner mode, but 3D mode might require mixing.
    Can you share how you do that, high % - low % - offset?
    Thanks.

    • @JRLaffertyJr
      @JRLaffertyJr  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Lescord Hi Michael--I never use any elevator mix with flaps on my safe rx planes. This includes my carbon z cub. There is some ballooning when they are first deployed but I use the time feature on my dx9 servo setup screen to slow the flap deployment on aux 2 to 5-7 seconds.

    Hello I have a question ... I want to install a eflr310013 Apprentice receiver in a plane that the battery will be install underneath the plane , question is can I install a regular esc without a switch and instal lipo when airplane is upside down ? Thanks in advance.

    • @JRLaffertyJr
      @JRLaffertyJr  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kalimero T5
      Hi-you can install without a switch and you can plug the battery in with the plane upside down as long as it remains “still” while safe initializes. This is with the eflite safe apprentice receiver.

    • @kalimerot5383
      @kalimerot5383 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi again . This mean when throttle will turn on receiver will recognize the position when airplane sit on ground ?

  • @brucelongdog

    do you mean the ar636a receiver can mix flaps and gear to free-up a
    channel to use a panic button on a dx6???

    • @JRLaffertyJr
      @JRLaffertyJr  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. An Eflite safe Rx has 7 channels. An ar636a has 6. You can't use flaps or gear with an ar636a---2 of those channels are reserved for safe modes and panic mode. The only ar636 safe Rx that can use flaps and gear is the safe select model found in the new Eflite spitfire.

  • @KronerToySpot
    @KronerToySpot 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is there a way with a DX6 to disable beginner and intermediate mode? I didn't even think this issue until a maiden with the AR636 in a new P46. Plane is stuck in beginner mode and will not roll. Any ideas?

    • @KronerToySpot
      @KronerToySpot 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      P47*

    • @JRLaffertyJr
      @JRLaffertyJr  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. You cant disable any if the modes. If you are stuck in beginner mode it means you didn't reverse aux1 in the transmitter. This is required on the dx 6. Otherwise beginner/panic mode is always on.

    • @KronerToySpot
      @KronerToySpot 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jim Lafferty yeah, this plane has flaps. From what I'm reading I'm gonna have to upgrade to a DX7. What a bummer. Oh well, that's the hobby!

    when binding a tail dragger with a apprentice receiver does it need to be level the plane not sitting on tail for safe to work right way like the p51 you did how due you bind it first time with apprentice receiver thanks

    • @JRLaffertyJr
      @JRLaffertyJr  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can bind and also plug in the battery with the plane with tail down. The apprentice's safe receiver has "level" built it. As long as plane is "still".

      Hi Brandon
      Unfortunately your Dx6 doesn't have enough channels for flaps or gear. I need to edit the video so it does not include the dx6--my goof. You need a 7 channel or greater tx for flaps or gear.
      Apologies!
      Jim

      Okay, Thanks Jim. I guess I'll try to sell my Dx6 and get something like a Dx7 or Dx9. I really like having the safe technology when flying.

    • @JRLaffertyJr
      @JRLaffertyJr  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really recommend the dx9. Much easier setup for safe and all the transmitter you will likely ever need.

      +Jim Lafferty Hello Jim ty for all your info on rcgroup. I buy durafly spitfire mk-24 and us the elflite safe rx and it works good =). but i have the dx6 and can not us the gear and flaps like you write here.
      But is it not possible to not us the panic butten and us that channel for gear?

    • @JRLaffertyJr
      @JRLaffertyJr  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Fan Avting hi--no, its not possible to use the panic channel for flaps or gear. You will need at least a 7 channel transmitter.
      WAtch for the new eflite spitfire with safe that Horizon Hobby just announced. It has a new kind of safe receiver that lets you use flaps and gear with a dx 6. I think it starts shipping in june. There is info on their website.

    Do you get any ocilalation using that receiver on a fast plane?

    • @JRLaffertyJr
      @JRLaffertyJr  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't had that problem but if you do, I would mechanically lessen the travel of the affected control surfaces by either moving one hole out at the servo horn or one hole in at the servo arm.

      Yes--as long as you protect the rx from vibrations.

    • @jjlanda1171
      @jjlanda1171 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim Lafferty, thank you very much, other question, the receiver come programmed or I have to program it?

    • @JRLaffertyJr
      @JRLaffertyJr  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Safe rx's can not be programmed. All you can do is assign channels to your transmitter, set rates, and stick directions. Go to rc groups.com and find the safe rx in another plane thread" lots of info there and knowledgeable people about safe.

      Horizon sells it for about 12 bucks. Its a 3 wire switch. On most of my safe planes I dont need it but the esc on my f-86 wont arm the throttle unless it gets power before the safe rx does.
