I was in a VP (patrol) squadron in the Navy. To give you an idea of how much power this old bird has, they could shut down three engines and climb on one. They didn't have the load they normally carry but I saw it done. Impressive.

flight enginneer on P-3 in Navy reserve in late 70's, was a civilian pilot also. Loved the airplane. Vp-91, Vp-61.

My dad was a flight engineer and was bummed when he retired.. come to find out they replaced the last one with a p8 in 2020. Still beautiful aircrafts. I remember being a kid and him taking us on tours with his buddies.

Great plane for surveillance and submarine harassment, they could hear us flying low above them and dropping pinging sonobuoys plus PDCs drove them crazy. We harassed a Russian sub for 3 straight days and i know they could not sleep. They tried every trick in the book to escape but we were constantly on top of them and they knew it.

Proof that Allison T56's better and more powerful than the quiet AE 2100 turboprop!! I once heard a distant P-3 Orion going 440mph at 28,000ft high, and was LOUD, while compared to aa C-130J going 400mph overhead, was QUIET!!
