    one of my favorite memories as a 9 or 10 year old was visiting the National Air and Space Museum, where to my astonishment I could behold the actual Wright Brothers and Lindbergh planes, and my mother saying yes when I asked if I could get (i.e., my parents would buy me, but "get" the verb I'm sure I used) a balsa-and-tissue model of this Stearman plane, which I gawked at in the souvenir shop display case in assembled form. 40 years later I still remember being shocked that something such an intricately beautiful structure (the tissue was unpainted, and almost transparent, allowing the frame within to be seen) is something that a child might possess, let alone that my parents would buy me such a kit. We weren't poor, but for me toy vehicles and construction toys or models meant things like plastic models, Legos, Tonka and Fisher-Price. I never imagined that a kit existed that let you simulate the actual construction of an airplane in ways resembling the real thing inside and out, nor even what a real plane might be like "inside and out."
    I'll never forget building the frame and seeing an aircraft "skeleton" take form in my hands, taking the satisfaction of those flat little pieces coming together in such an aesthetic and imposing form. Then, applying the "skin", tissue paper.
    In other words, I saw that these amazing airplanes share so much in common with living creatures, even down to being made mostly of organic material; they have a skeleton, skin, and even something like a "heart" in the engine. Since then, I always feel that the original planes were more beautiful than what followed.

    I absolutely LOVE the Stearman. It's one of my favourite planes. I've never flown in one but I have flown ON two of them 3 times as can be seen on my TH-cam channel. Yes I have stood on the top wing 3 times at anything up to 2,000ft and sometimes upside-down as the pilot has given me stall turns, loops and barrel rolls too!

      I love bi-planes too. I've had one passenger ride in a 1942 de Havilland Tiger Moth and I have had three passenger rides ON a Boeing Stearman! And yes I do mean ON the top wing! All of my bi-plane rides can be seen on my TH-cam channel. All great fun!

    Yeah, it'd be more pleasant if the sound were dynamic, devastating. I'm thinking: Where's the hot-dog stand?

    Why is the rear seat of the biplane assigned for the pilot, while the front seat is assigned for the passenger?

    • @greatflyer_aviation
      @greatflyer_aviation  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Centre of gravity, it's a big radial engine in the front!

      I suppose it would be balanced when only the pilot is in the plane, and then with the passenger it would be front-heavy. But the plane is better at compensating for being front-heavy, than rear heavy. Do I understand the explanation correctly?

    • @georgejacob3162
      @georgejacob3162 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Numerous reasons. Front seat was for the navigator/reconnaissance photographer/gunner. Also it was for the trainee pilot but the trainee pilot has much more of a limited view with wings above and below and with all the other materials surrounding the front cockpit. The pilot has a much more clear view. I've stood on the top wing of Boeing Searman's when wing walking and the pilot can see me giving the thumbs up to carry on flying or the thumbs down to stop (I've never given the thumbs down to stop!). Check out my TH-cam channel and you'll see me on top of a Boeing Stearman doing loops, stall turns and barrel rolls! I have another video of me sat in a de Havilland Tiger Moth and the pilot gave me two loops and a stall turn in that too! All absolutely marvelous fun!

    Our instructor would say any landing you and your passengers can safely walk away from is a good landing.

    How do I get a flight in this

    • @georgejacob3162
      @georgejacob3162 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nevermind sitting IN it! Do what I did and contact AeroSuperBatics of Rendcomb, Gloucestershire and book a flight ON the plane! Don't worry they don't go upside-down on your first flight. You have to book another flight for that. There is NOTHING like the view from the top wing of a Boeing Stearman! Looking down on that propeller is breathtaking! I've been on the top wing 3 times now. The first time was just a fly about. The 2nd time was with loops and stall turns. The 3rd time was with loops, stall turns and barrel rolls! It is the best thing I have ever done!

    • @georgejacob3162
      @georgejacob3162 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh just to add I booked a flight in a de Havilland Tiger Moth with GoFly at Old Sarum Airfield near Salisbury. I paid a bit extra so the pilot gave me two loops and a stall turn. It was rather spiffing and can be viewed on my TH-cam channel along with all my wing walks and my tendency to fall out of GoSkydive's Cessna Caravan!
