I think what Dampe means by "do you know what kind of mask you're wearing" he is referring to the kind of creature it is representing. Those mummy creatures you see primarily in the future of castle town. And since those mummies are also in the royal tombs and he's the grounds keeper it'd make sense that he knows what those things are too.

Though it was a common trope in the 90s that kids would be the "only ones" taking a threat seriously because their imaginations allowed them to see things for what they were, while adults were usually forced to dismiss them as fairy tales and be completely blind to world ending events. That's what made being a kid playing these games so charming, back when everything wasn't SPELLED OUT like in modern games.

The HMS quest is so much more than a run-of-the-mill sidequest. Its a seemingly straightforward cycle of one customer to the next, but if you actually wear them around for the sake of it, you get to dig-up some pretty neat lore. Thinking about it, it's awesome that they made the next game revolve round the concept. It's ironic that when you wear a mask, not only does the world see you differently, but you start to see the world differently. Tangent: This holiday season, I dressed up as The Grinch for a community event. I'm just an average dude. But becoming such a beloved character, everyone flocked to me. I got hugs, people coming up to me for pics. For one priceless moment, I shed my adult woes and experienced the world the way it should be.
Yeah, I think they wanted to return to that with BoTW/ToTK. making the world feel more alive by having you talk to the various NPCs and see thier plights and tales. They react differently based on the outfits you're wearing and reveal interesting lore details that we used to assume wrong in the past. (though one thing we DO learn is Hyrulians are absolute cowards... but other species are completely fearless.)

Unfortunately, This can't be the case, even though it really seems like it. According to the devs, Gerudo only give birth to pure Gerudo, so they must have been refering to a Hylian with red hair.
Ahh yes being predominantly female the gerudo take husbands of many colors but their genes are so strong that they will completely override any of the fathers genes and look purely gerudo.

Burial Masks… Redeads wear them, Danpe is knowledgeable about them. I think that the burial masks were some kind of ancient ritual to send off the dead. Those masks were placed onto the corpses before being buried as some kind of ancient, Kakariko burial ritual. Danpe is unimpressed because he’s curious as to why someone alive would be wearing an ancient, burial mask. Why does TH-cam never let you post a single comment without an edit. It’s a personal goal at this point.

The semi-failed experiments guard tombs and other important (but usually long forgotten) locations. By the time of Wind Waker the Sheikah had started experimenting on their own people which is why they look so different and have Sheikah tattoos. By Breath of the Wild the process is perfected as shown by the mummy at the end of each shrine. Someone on TH-cam (maybe Zeltik) did a wonderful documentary on all this.

The Spooky Mask being carved from a plank taken from a coffin can't confirm that people die in Zelda, because it was already confirmed by stuff that isn't obscurely hidden like that. For example: the ghosts of the composers Sharp and Flat, the mere existence of the Graveyard at all, the specific existence of the Royal Family's Tomb, the guard you can find in the back alley of the Market after Ganondorf attacks Hyrule Castle but before getting the Master Sword, who actually dies in front of you if you talk to him.

Forest temple music from OOT is top tier gaming music especially in tone setting and matching the area it’s played in. Also it’s just one of my favorites from any game.
I’m currently playing ocarina of time for the first time and Im in Jabu Jabus stomach so I was just introduced to the laboratory guy. This game in particular gets pretty dark. Fucking rad.

It reminds me of how the Deku's on stage react to the different masks. I love how when you show them the mask of truth, they point blank say "That's the ugliest max ever... please take this and never wear that again..." They also attack the bunny hood, but that may be because rabbits eat plants and they see you as a threat.
I remember wearing all the masks and reaching Zelda just for her reactions. My favourite one was the Goron mask because it makes her laugh and say how it makes your head look big. I wish the game had more moments like that showing that the princess is still just a silly kid.
If you like the topic of masks in Japanese culture, I might recommend Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse. It's a horror game, but there's plenty of things for you to read about ceremonial masks and such. It's mostly fake stuff for the game, but it still gives you an idea of how they are considered in older Japanese culture. I thought it was cool. Just be aware that there's a mandatory slide puzzle in the game, which was a bad idea but there are solvers for that online.
The side character lore in Ocarina of Time really added intrigue to the world. I'm loving TOTK and its side characters BUT not much of the side character lore adds much intrigue to the world and overall lore. I think TOTK missed a great opportunity in not enhancing the main story through more side character lore.
ReDeads also wear these masks which means we can infer that the mask is likely some kind of burial mask. Though possibly an outdated one, since (with the exception of the ones in the Castle Town Ruins) we only see ReDeads in long abandoned tombs or temples, meaning they are presumably very old corpses that have reanimated. If the mask is old and outdated that would also explain why Dampe, the gravedigger, is the only one who actually knows it's a burial mask, while other Hylian adults don't seem to take any particular notice of that fact.
My favorite is when you wear the yellow fox mask in front of Zelda and she replies with “oh your a cute little mouse” reference pikachu

ReDeads also wear these masks which means we can infer that the mask is likely some kind of burial mask. Though possibly an outdated one, since (with the exception of the ones in the Castle Town Ruins) we only see ReDeads in long abandoned tombs or temples, meaning they are presumably very old corpses that have reanimated.
If the mask is old and outdated that would also explain why Dampe, the gravedigger, is the only one who actually knows it's a burial mask, while other Hylian adults don't seem to take any particular notice of that fact.
