That was so interesting!!!! You can see that it was a labour of love. Thanks for keeping your notifications on long enough to be able to read comfortably. The end result was beautiful. I expected it looked and worked better than new.
That thing has been through the Great Depression, WW2, the beginning of the EEC, the Cold War, the premiere of StarWars and Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark, the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the split of the Soviet Union, Facebook, Twitter and Netflix, not to mention the beginnings of Microsoft and Apple. And it still works...BIG WAU! PS - Keep those dust bunnies! Most of them come from people and pets long dead! They are history! Great job! Regards from Lisbon Portugal.
Beautiful job restoring this vacuum. I am amazed how quiet it is. Built in Germany in 1934 it was surely an expensive luxury to own when new. I really enjoyed this video!
I thought no better restorers....but you are the BEST SIR. I love the way you give the subtitles and the information...it's superb Sir....keep going . Love to watch.
Beautiful. Better than when it left the factory. great attention to detail. Glad to see that you replaced the bearings. Surprised to see the original brush was in such good shape. Happy to have found this video!
Yes, the brush was really in good shape. It is almost impossible to repair them if they are in bad shape. You can build a new one but repairing the original is difficult, so I`m glad. Thanks a lot for commenting
Before I forget it: If you'd like to, please share this. video to others. It was such a lot of work and it would be so cool if many people see it. Thanks a lot!
About ten years ago there was an Airway upright vacuum cleaner in a friend's shop from 1926 which was still in working condition. It had a hollow handle onto which a hose could be attached at the end. It also had a power brush roll with its own motor and headlight. Airway was best known for the introduction of sanitary paper bags for vacuum cleaners- they called it the "Airway Sanitary System".
Here’s the TH-cam link to a video upload of one of those Airway Superchief’s in action that you are describing: th-cam.com/video/boDF2n8fcgg/w-d-xo.html
i absolutely love it. when i was young i was selling these machines. still like the brand and it's nice to see these very old models. Back then they should have been something very impressive. great job !
I’m weird. I’ve always loved the sound of vacuum cleaners. They sing me to sleep. If it’s nice and warm, and someone is vacuuming, I’m gonna fall asleep. Difficult when I was staying in a house with a maid that cleaned every morning. I’d get up, sit down in the library with a coffee or something and wake up an hour or so later. Haha
This nice sound of vacuums you're talking about is also fairly specific to large full-size vacuums and older vintage style ones. The smaller they are the more whiney they tend to sound.
Yes, funny, isn't it? All started with electrical motors for gramophones and after this business became less profitable Vorwerk invented a broom with a motor :)
Liked the restoration, because it was so well done and attentive to originality, even if I usually prefer to leave the patina to such old things. You made a very faithful restoration work here....and how much time and patience !The only thing i do not agree is leaving the wooden parts visible instead of repainting them black as original....this happens quite often with old Kobolds and make them look a bit too prehistorical to me....i personally prefer seing them exactly as they came out from the factory, but this is a very personal point of view ( and i also did the same thing with one of my 1920's Hoovers years ago....but I changed my mind later ). Thanks for sharing, many interesting tips and krafts ! Guido - Italy
Yes, the timber parts were pretty much always painted back then. The brush attachments sometimes had beautiful faux grain finishes! I think my 1934 AEG Vampyrette (inherited from my great-grandmother via my great-aunt) originally had one but it's more or less completely gone due to damp storage in the past, my great-aunt dragged it out of her barn when she gave it to me. It even still had the original deep red mains lead with moulded plug, an absolute rarity in that era!
Hey and thanks for that comment! You are absolutely right and if I would (I maybe will) do it again, I definitely will use black glossy coat for the brush and the handle. I now even have a small can of ORIGINAL Vorwerk coat which feels to be still a fluid inside! I don't want to open it till I got another Kobold Vacuum. Thank you so much for your honest an 100% true words!
Hey, thanks for that! This vacuum is from the 30s so maybe it already has pop rivets to fix the plate. I already sent an email to the Vorwerk historical guys to get a verified information :)
I have a similar project lining up, so I came across your channel. Great work and considering it's a rather new channel you started, I have to say you're doing great. Keep it up!!!
Awesome restoration. You can buy those twisted rivets that hold the name tag but it took me ages to find them though. I like the way it’s hand held and has a long handle as well. Fantastic engineering for the time. I wonder if a Dyson will still work in 90 years. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
Thank you so much. Yes I also love those old engineering things. Do you know that the origin of those vacuums were motors for phonographs and gramophones? The gramophone business brake in and so they decided to use the motors in another way.
@@restorationhouserestorations I agree. Compared with modern design and the scheme is the simplest. Just a brush motor and a bag. But cleaning the house with it is much better and even pleasant.
I am pretty sure that you painted the label the opposite that it originally was. On etched tags like that one, the background is usually painted, and the letters are bare metal.
Nope, you're not right my friend. Maybe you didn't watch the video careful enough but you can see the original condition of the tag at 0:06. And all the Vorwerk pictures of this model tell me the same.
good result - I wonder whether (at 12.12) you could have used a small, firm, very short-haired paint roller to paint the letters? Would be worth an experiment, and I understand our lovely English road signs used to be painted that way. I bet that in the factory that made this device, they used a little roller or maybe a paint pad of some sort to do the lettering. Best wishes from your friends in the UK!
sure - trial and error - "experiment is the best teacher" but I've looked at some of my old tools and machines and there is no way these badges were painted with a brush.
1. You criticise the casting? These parts were most probably made long before pressure die casting and only full die casting was available. I only now notice this machine is about 90 years old. That means I was not even a thought when it was made. Please respect the older folk for their achievements with the technology they had at hand - your grand technology which you take for granted today was based on that. 2. This old machine most probably saw a lot of hard "mileage" during it's days and your restoration of it is greatly appreciated. The result looks pretty good, I must say. Very interesting to watch.
Hey Pieter. First of all: Thank you for your detailed comment. Second: You are absolutely right!!!!!! It wasn't my intention to discredit somebody and yes, one can think I did. Nope, as it was originally. Nothing in between.
