    In the movie Ritual, I kinda get why the creature is so angry. I mean he's the illegitimate son of Loki. Imagine if you're dad was a god, two of your brothers are literally the greatest threats to the entire universe, your other brother is the mount that the king of the gods rides into battle, your sister is a full blown goddess with her own entire realm, and all you get is some random forest and a few inbred weirdos to worship you. I love in Ritual when he punches the old lady, I laughed so hard when I first watched the movie. I was so proud of him when he did that. Also, the monster is a Jötunn, it is not a god, just a giant from Norse mythology, they represent chaos. They summoned the Jötunn to Midgard because they are children of Loki and believe in chaos because Loki is their "father".

    • @animentamaxarius3931
      @animentamaxarius3931 3 ปีที่แล้ว +116

      Funny enough, through norse mythology, these Jötunn are essentially demigod's as well, as Loki is half god and half Jötunn, meaning his kids(even the bastards) are also part god. Also, I loved The Ritual, when it first came out, it was genuinely a breath of fresh air. The genre of Folk horror has massively increased in that past 2-3 years though. Also, I stole your "ö" as I don't know how to type it on a keyboard lol.

      @@animentamaxarius3931 All Loki's children are essentially God's because Odin basically made them God's, Hel is the ruler of the underworld. Sleipnir is Odin's steed. Fenrir is so powerful Odin has him chained to his throne. Jörmungandr is a terrifying serpent that not even Odin will touch (since he knows it will one day kill his son Thor).
      The Ritual was great when it first came out and I think GG would have liked it more if he had watched it when it first came out because now like every movie is trying to use gods or the devil in some way to make horror. I know thats been around for a long time but the use of Norse mythology is more recent and it's becoming increasingly popular

The end times has to happen and Loki and his children will bring about the end because the universe decided that.

    On top of things, Killing of A Sacred Deer is actually a retelling of the Greek play Iphigenia in Aulis. In it, the leader Agamemnon is sailing his forces against Troy and while stopping on an island hunts and kills a deer, but realizing he is within one of the sacred hunting grounds of the goddess Artemis (now you get where the title comes from). Artemis stops the winds and keeps his ships on the island, threatening to starve his men and lose the war in Troy, unless he is willing to sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia as justice.
    With that knowledge in mind, Martin's dialog becomes WAY more fascinating because he's portraying Artemis and the unusual, often inhuman priorities and morals of the Greek Gods. Like when you bring up how Martin dismisses the daughter offering her body to him, he has complete apathy because that's not what he considers to be just in this exchange. Later we really see this in the famous spaghetti eating scene where Kidman's character is trying desperately to understand and plea with Martin to stop and meanwhile Martin is telling this weird story about being upset when he finds out the way he eats spaghetti isn't novel or unique, more upset at that than the death of his father, because to him that novelty held more value in the strange, capricious values of godhood.
    Really fascinating film.

    I would like to say one thing about the ending of The Ritual. I personally read the ending as a demonstration of an implicit conflict between what two characters were saying to Luke. Hutch was telling Luke to get out on his own and escape, saying that Luke was "the strongest of them." Obviously this conflicts with what happened with Rob, but we'll come back to it. The Jotunn (the monster) on the other hand, chose to mark Luke instead of killing him outright. It's stated in the movie that the Jotunn targets people who are carrying immense grief and pain with them, to bring them into his little cult of followers. The Jotunn killed the other three out of hand, because it knew it couldn't necessarily make them bow to it. And that's why it marked Luke instead of killing him. Because it thought it could make him bow, which is why it was pushing Luke to the ground towards the end. The Jotunn knew Luke to be a person to run, rather than fight, which was why it was so caught off guard when Luke kept fighting it. So the ending, to me, is a reconciliation of sorts. We, the audience, are asked who was right. Hutch was right, in that Luke was strong enough to escape with his life. But the Jotunn was right, in that Luke was too weak and cowardly to save his friends. And Luke himself is caught in the middle of this. He doesn't even know himself. It shows that he's an inherently selfish character. When he shot the Jotunn, I personally read that as more of an act of spite or anger, more so than an act of any sort of logic. Anyways, sorry for the long ramble.
    Great vid as always, GG! :]
    Edit: Full disclosure, I'm a massive fan of this movie, so I may be reading a bit deeply into things Lol. And also excellent point, the score goes hard in this movie.

    something i think you missed, the jotun in the ritual was _giving_ the characters visions. it was using the visions of trauma etc to herd them around the woods and make them go in particular directions. This is also why the villagers believed the jotun to be a god, as it could put visions in their minds to manipulate them into doing so, so they would sacrifice to it.

  • @clueless_cutie
    @clueless_cutie ปีที่แล้ว +82

    The best part of the ritual is the flashbacks because every single time you see those glowing eyes, you're staring at the monster. It's just mind fucking the characters (our perspective) so we don't realize we're looking right at the damn thing. And the tree shots where it moves or steps away and realize, once again, you were looking right at it and didn't realize it. It's hard to pull off the effect without it being cheesy, and the hand slithering behind the tree worked beautifully to startle me and give me that sudden chill of "oh fuck."

      Jotun are just a rival family to the Asar, right? They are just demigods. And Loke is half Jotun, and half Asar, so kinda if Romeo and Juliet had a kid. The Jotun are not monsters.
      Do you mean that the Deer is a forgotten offspring of Loke and Argisboda, the Jotun woman he had three of his other kids with: Fenris, Jörmungandr, and Hel.
      Because those kids are monsters because of Loke’s ability to shape-shift, nothing else.

Which is totally fair cause Norse mythology is complex and isn’t really common knowledge. Plus Marvel has totally wrecked the original myths as far as popular culture.

I've lived in/near the woods for a solid chunk of my life and in my opinion it does a really good job at capturing just how fucking terrifying the woods can be. Also, when you re-watch the movie, you can actually see the monster just watching the main characters from a distance. I think the scene with the withered people breathing was also really good. I find that real life is far more succesful in that sense... That there are real life monsters doing the vilest of things is more disturbing to me than most movies.

    Nice breakdown of The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Fantastic movie. I love how detached the family is, except for Bob. The ending is brilliant with the dad covering their heads with bags like if he can’t see it, and he makes a random choice, then that makes it okay. And what’s up with Martin anyway? I feel like he has powers, because there was no trace of anything in their system, and he was able to seemingly turn it on and off in that scene where Kim can walk for a bit.

It is one of my personal favorite movies, I haven't seen The Lobster yet, which is also directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and similarly the characters show no emotion and he uses the same main actor from Killing. I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this yet but the Jotunn is actually rather relevant to the location of the film. Hinduismos the Jotunn is actually based on a “real” creature that has the same name. The Jotunn is based primarily from its source, Norse mythology; and, in this mythos the Jotunn is a spawn/child of Loki just like Fenrir (a giant wolf), Hel (think Hela from MCU), and Jörmungandr (Giant snake like from GOW). Anyhow Norse people would go on to spread to other nations and appeared under new nationalities, one of which was the Swedes. Since the film takes place in the Swedish boonies it’s safe to say that a Norse following cult following a literal Jotunn is highly possible (@9:07). Idk knowing this made me appreciate it more. Also I laughed at the part you said how did they know he's a god and all that but personally I just assumed that this community has been shut off from the outside for a long time and still have their old beliefs in the gods like ofc a monster would be assumed to be a demigod here! Especially because if they sacrifice people to it then it leaves most of them alone

    The Ritual is much better as a book. It has elements of the Norwegian Black Metal scene and you delve into the boys backgrounds much more and get more connected to them, there for making their deaths more emotional. Luke is such a complex character in the book and is saddled with the confusion of being an outsider, Rob never existed in the book either.

    I finally watched TKoaSD last night after seeing this review when it first came out so didn't remember much thankfully. After my bf and I watched it and read up a bit, the ending is wild. You can tell in the diner they're all still scuffed so it was likely the next day. The whole family eyeballs Martin warily and it's because Steven never actually "chose" which family to kill, so it's uncertain if they actually are off the hook. Also, I don't think Kim was trying to sacrifice herself. She tried to leave before and this was her last-ditch effort to make herself look good, just like Anna wearing the dress he likes and Bob cutting his hair and saying he wants to be a cardiologist. They were all subtly begging to be spared, which makes him not 'choosing' that much more impactful. The movie is also based off a greek myth that the principal mentions Kim had written an amazing essay on.

    Haven't you ever done something shitty that you regret? Something that you wish you could have done differently? Something selfish maybe? Something that got amplified by the circumstances? I think we all make mistakes, and we all have defects, and we all deserve to be the protagonists of our own lives. We all deserve an opportunity to fix our mistakes. Sometimes we torture ourselves with regret, and unless you're the one who pulls the trigger, I think we deserve an opportunity to get rid of that regret.
