The 2021 Porsche Cayman GT4 Still Needs One Mod to Be Perfect - One Take

    The 2021 Porsche Cayman GT4 may just be facelifted for 2020, but it's what's underneath that counts: a new 4.0L, naturally aspirated engine shared with the Boxster Spyder making 414 hp at 7600 RPM, a front axle shared with the GT3, the perfect six-speed shifter, and full on Porsche motorsport theater that's practical enough to use every day (with the right tires). In the land of Porsche, where price tags get way out of hand quickly, the GT4, at around $110,000, is a spectacular value.
    Porsche provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.

    Can we just applaud Porsche for doing their own thing, while continuing to make some of the best cars in the world? I mean what other company makes 2 4.0L engines, that are completely different than one another? Just let that sink in.

      It's not a completely new engine though. It's just a bored out 3.0L Carrera unit with turbos taken out. It still is a marvel of an engine though.

      It just follows clarksons old Porsche argument. Porsche went so far to make the boxster/cayman inferior to the 911 that they went out of their way to produce a different (inferior) 4.0 flat six.

    I now have about 8000km on mine since December. Almost all of them in the Swiss Alps or Black Forest. Perfect size for those roads. And I can't say that the gearing has caused any issues. Even with shorter 2nd and 3rd gears you'd be only using those given the speed limits. It's not going to change the amount of shifts that much. The stock gearing is well spaced and also suited for motorway driving and road trips.

      Listen, buddy: all the Porsche 992 911 versions are smaller than a Corvette and smaller than the Aston Martin Vantage. How about that? The Porsche is smaller, despite being a 2+2 vehicle!
      How much "smaller" should a Porsche 911 Carrera be, in your opinion...??
      Some people really tend to repeat the weird but boring "opinions" from other annoying smart asses way too often... ;-)
      The 911 can't be much smaller, because of bigger customers, so easy is that. Porsche would never make the mistake, to build the 911 in such a crappy and unusable size like these way too small sports cars Lotus Elise and Exige, which maybe are fun to drive but are totally bullshit and unusable as a daily driver.
      The Cayman GT4 isn't that smaller than a 911 Carrera! Just compare the width of the dashboards of these two cars!
      And maybe just think about these customers, who have the same length like Matt Farah... Bigger drivers like him wouldn't be very delighted, if the 911 would be much smaller. As a daily driver the size of the Porsche 911 is just perfect.

    You can't compare new laptimes from the Nordschleife with those from 16 years ago - not even 5 years ago. The track has been overhauled many times since then - better and flatter surfaces etc. - so it is a lot faster - even with the same car, same tires, same conditions.

      @f430ferrari5 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Wolfgang. 👍absolutely correct. In addition, tire technology continues to improve.
      You put a set of fresh tires on a Carrera GT and there is no way a GT4 is keeping up. I don’t see how it would be possible. I don’t believe brake and suspension technology has expanded so vastly as to where the CGT would struggle.

    Matt, great video. Thank you. I consistently enjoy these one takes.
    Previously, you’d convinced me to go with a e63s wagon ( I am a father ) as the next vehicle. Especially after that gorgeous skyline run in my backyard you did last year. But now I’m leaning towards letting my wife drive them around in an Ascent, and picking up a manual 718 spyder. I’m not a track guy, but we’ve been a manual family for a while now (prelude, rav-4, wrx, e39, e90, s4, 996 4s) and it’s been sad to envision life with no more manuals.
    Question on the Spyder spec. If I’m not going to track it, and I’m really not that cool, I was thinking of dropping the carbon breaks+seats like in your GT4 here. Going with the 18way adjustables, the gearing mod, and titanium exhaust. Do you think I need to raise the wing on the Spyder?
    My goal is something I can actually have a great time driving, weekend+, and not absolutely take a bath on resale in 3-5 years.

    Great review. Love manual. Wish the gearing band was tighter on the GT4. I own a 2020 Mustang Bullitt and the gears are very long. The six speed redline shift points are about 5 mph lower than the Porsche's. The torque band on the Mustang is around 4800 RPM and the Mustang's power band for HP can really be felt starting at around the 6000 RPM range. That being said I know what you are talking about. I have to drive fast to shift through the gears and we have no Autobahn in the States. I'm looking at the 718 models Cayman S and up to purchase. I'd rather have the N/A engine. I hear the 2021 Cayman GT4 is offered in 7 speed dual clutch PDK. It is more torquey. Matt, will you be reviewing from Porsche this vehicle? • @randomhawks3232
    @randomhawks3232 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    PDK is out already on the configurator. Roughly a $3200 option to add over manual. Appears Porsche also moved away from the Alcantara brand to Race-Tec (similar product). Also, 'Paint to Sample' (PTS) has also been added if your want to spend an additional $12K.

    Awesome as always, Matt. If you go back to think about it, do you really think that it is quicker to reach the limit of a 718 than it is a 911? I’ve been thinking that the 718 is so balanced and confidence inspiring that any good driver would reach the limit of how fast they’re willing to corner on a public road in it very quickly and just feel stagnant there. It seems to require too much coldblooded racey driving to go where a 718 can go and it’s too dangerous to go there outside of a safe track. Or, did you feel that the car itself reached it’s cornering speed breaking point easier than a 911?

    Matt, what do you make of the new GTS 4.0 models? They're basically the standard Cayman/boxster with the engine from this car. The only difference being that they produce 394 hp instead of 414, and redline at 7.8 instead of 8; all through a software change. At the same price point as the c8, and with a manual gearbox, do you think they make sense?

    @thesmokingtire Porsche could learn a few things from Corvette or GM. Porsche could implement a camera rearview mirror & the PDR.
    Of course closer gears for both manual and PDK would be awesome and HP/TQ of GT2/GT3RS would be nice. A faster steering rack would be great too.
