I was 71 years of age on Sunday and I just learnt the chords to this song, I think this is one of the most cherished accomplishmets/objectives of my life so far, thank you Tom for putting real meaning in peoples' lives
@user-nq4vr2bq8p I am going to your channel in hopes that you have posted your accomplishment of this Beautiful song that I so love and if it's not there would you pls post it there. Without even hearing it I am so proud of you 👏
My dad absolutely loved listening to Tom Petty. He had all the casettes and would always play them loud and sing along to them in the car when I was a kid riding around with him and my brother and sister. I remember being embarrassed a couple of times when he picked me up from school with a Tom Petty song playing at full volume. I lost my Dad several years ago and everytime I hear a Tom Petty song play on the radio it brightens my day. I wish I could spend one more day with him and ride around just jamming out to Tom Petty. This song just reminds me of him and how he is looking down on all of us with no more pain or stress. Life is short don’t ever take it for granted. When you’re a kid, you think you’re invincible and that everyone around you will always be there. You learn quicky how short life really is and how much you miss those little car rides with the family and just little moments you never thought much of at the time. Live in the moment and really show love and appreciation to those close to you every chance you get cause you never know when it will be the last chance to do so. May God bless everybody and everything in this existence. I love you Dad, may you rest in peace in heaven.
The pain in this song runs deep. "I love you, please love me. I'm not so bad. And I love you so." It's so open and honest, so vulnerable. Brings tears to my eyes.
I met my wife online because of this song. I was performing it unplugged on Facebook and she left a comment...now she is my wife...and we are not even from the same country...or continent. Tom Petty unites the world!!!

You're right JP, he did have a certain place in everyone's heart because his music came from the heart, and man, almost three years down the road since that fateful Monday when the news came over that Tom had stopped breathing the night before and was in the hospital on life support... it's still sad. And it still makes my heart hurt. I put together a 40 song Spotify playlist of his music and I want to give you (and all the rest of you TP&THB fans) the link for the playlist. Some of my friends from high school used to jam out to this one when it came out. 14 years later, we reunited with an RV and drove and camped to Yosemite National Park in California. Played this in the RV when we were up on the mountain and it just gives me goosebumps. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the soundtrack to our lives
+Marko Kalič Also probably the most gut-wrenching, heart-breaking lines I've heard in a song. Makes you want to hold his hand, or his head, or something, and say "there, there, it'll be alright."

Tom's millions of fan are so heartbroken , of his passing. He was such a nice sweet man , who did not have..the I am a rock star attitude, I met him in 1990. Just a nice man all the way. I am still in tears.
This song reminds me about my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battling to cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I miss her smiles, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, and I never miss a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times, there is some pain, I will cry in vain but won’t let you know how I will feel yes, I will miss you to the core! but some times i wonder why bad thing always happen to good people. Was lucky enough to be in the audience when this was filmed but only thanks to Tom Petty. He was tired of playing to corporate types and this was a twenty night house band gig. So here was the deal. Line up early morning in front of Tower Records. Only two tickets per person and your drivers license # was written down on the ticket and had to match when you entered the Fillmore. Place only holds about 1,000. No one has every done so much to care about his true fans.
True true true. I read his bio and e-mailed the author with congratulations (it was moving and painful reading frankly). I included 2 articles which the author passed on to Tom Petty and he e-mailed me back, saying he liked what I wrote. Who else does stuff like that? He died for his audience: even with a fractured hip, he refused to let people down. This is not Jim Morrison etc. : this is a stubborn, ethical man who unintentially (sp) overdosed because the pain became unbearable off stage and for months one imagines some tolerance developed. A small amount over the limit. I think of him as our (all of us) unmet friend. Tx for posting.
Was lucky enough to be working at The Complex Studios in West LA in '99 when Petty rented out our soundstage for 10 days of rehearsals for this concert. I remember that oriental rug. Great to listen to him and the Heartbreakers day after day. Such a great band.
in 98 my better after 20 disposed of me in a brutal fashion. Had to live out of my car for a while. Eventually I clawed my way to this small apartment suite at the very top of the building. This song was just out then and became my anthem to carry on. Seeing them live is unreal. At the last show I had a sign that Tom came over to read (was front row) and be beamed when he read it. "TOM: George and Roy see you"... he holds a place in my heart.
The music and lyrics make my heart hurt that you're gone, and cry for these days. You are the greatest that ever lived, and I'll listen to your music every day forever. I've been blessed to have you throughout my life and seeing you play live every time, they're the best memories ever. Thank you so very much xoxo
I was fortunate to meet Tom Petty back in 1990. He was the most nicest sincere man I ever spoken to. He did not have the..I am a rock star attitude..I have posted this on many of Tom's songs..He was just so nice and down to earth. I miss him and I can not stop my tears for him.We LOVE you Tom, ROCK IN PEACE..You are at the room at the top.
This has to be my all-time favourite Tom Petty song out of hundreds of possibles, takes me to my special place, like a shortcut to Nirvana. Thanks Tom, I love you
Me as well! Tears don’t come as often until you watch his last few months of touring & can see the pain he was in every single step😢 So sad he lived like that to finish out a tour but mostly because he didn’t wanna disappoint his fans! Such a humble & respected artist.
@@kthor I just cried about him! That tour was such a success too. From the time he put out his first albums, I played him endlessly. I used to daydream that he was following me around because he just got whatever was going in with me! I think a lot of us felt that way or wished he was! There is an awesome Learning To Fly from Bonnaroo Festival I believe a few years before he left us and he turns it into a gospel song or a hymn to himself. I hope he is looking down on us and I definitely think he has wings. Bob Dylan played that song a few days after his death. Bob loved Tom. I think most people did. A truly great artist and a nice person too. I wish he was still here. What a loss! I will play him until the day I diie. I couldn't believe it when I heard the news that morning and then they said that maybe he was alive, but he was gone. I don't think any other musician's death has affected me like that. I just always thought he would be there! If Bob Dylan leaves us, I am leaving too. 🙏🤒💝💝💝🙏
It's still so hard to talk about. Short story: my life was in danger from a ruptured appendix and as they were getting me prepped for surgery the anesthesiologist asked me my favorite band, of course I said Tom Petty. they randomly selected this song and played it in the OR. I remember thinking it was going to be the last song I ever heard, I clung to every note, so glad it was Tom singing.. As the mask came down on my face I saw his face.. I breathed deeply and felt so suddenly calm. He took my hand and we floated up long white hallways, and were sitting on top of a cloud, talking. I thought it was a premonition that I would not make it, but I somehow survived. Then a few weeks later it was Tom who didn't survive. I felt like he was there to comfort me but I couldn't be there for him. I prayed he had music in his heart when he passed. This was so hard to share. It eats at me every day. Please no negative comments.. I know it was just the anesthesia drugs but it was the night I almost died and it was his music that helped me in what could have been my final moments on this earth.. it has touched me in ways I cant begin to describe..
REQ53 Great story... When you were sitting on top of that cloud with him, what did you two talk about?? Just curious because there is probably something profound in that conversation. Glad you recovered.
Janet Sutton what an absolute DREAM STORY...I dream about Tom Petty, also. ..but probably because I have had him somewhere in my mind since his death. What a guy. What a talent. What a special human being who maybe was only able to find peace from his pain through his death. He made a helluva ride on the river. God bless this special soul, and to hell with all of the haters. Glad you made it also. .but would love to hear more about the dream.
That's a beautiful story, very touching and poignant. I FELT it. I will never forget your story, ever. Thank you for sharing it. It's gonna stay with me forever.
This is a phenomenal song. On just my first listen it became one of my favorite Petty songs. I feel it’s actually superior to most of his 70s smash hits. It didn’t reach the same highs because of the bias towards aging rockstars making new music.
There's a lot of really good comments and a lot of love for rock n roll music on this video. It's really good to see, especially with the way things are in the world right now. Just wanted to be the one to say, Tom Petty is the fuckin man.
One cool motha fucke to quote Dave Grohl!! I have been obsessed with his catalogue for the past two months and I am ashamed I am not saying for my entire life! Always loved him but I guess I took him for granted. Why he isn't being named artist of the century is beyond me... 28 top tens plus 5 more with the Wilburys!! We are blessed to have the magic he left us with. RIP. Sweet Tom💙💜
You got that right Mark. He was , is and will always be the Fucken man. He's partying with some pretty damn good people now. Probably tearing it up with Roy right now or at least we can only hope so.
For me, what impresses is that Petty has not merely endured but grown; not content to hold his ground ( though to be sure in life this is no mean feat ) he has grown his craft into what we all accept as an art. And what truly thrills, is that he has done this across a span of years in partnership with substantially the same group of men with whom we first saw him. Those years accumulate in the sound Petty and the Heartbreakers produce - the groove gets deeper as the years pile up. There simply is no other way to sound and resonate with us as they do. And this song makes the point - in so few words and with such gravitas Petty sings and the Heartbreakers play a simple truth about time and the cost of commitment. Great band - brilliant song.
I'm going out on a limb like my Mum. What do cats do when they're terrified? Climb up a tree to the tallest branch and sometimes they can't get down. It's what Eva, my mum, did. So glad Mr. Petty did. eventually. come. down. To the benefit of us all, who listen. I watched an experiment recently arranged by Stephen Fry to prove that music was the most powerful of media. Took a friend to Tosca (friend hated opera); blood pressure cuffs and at exactly the same moments they both spiked. My background's in classical music but I grew up with the Beatles et al. I don't think it an accident that 2 of them discovered and befriended a man of like mind and inspiration. I love it when people write reasoned and heartfelt comments. Thank you.
Brian David Stoliker Beautiful and brilliant and spot on👌. The pain in this song isn't just heard by us, it's truly FELT......and felt by Tom Petty, as well. He was first and foremost, after all, a human being. He liked, he laughed, he loved, he hurt, he ached. And he channeled all of it into his brilliant and heartfelt music, from day one. And it only got better from there.....as he grew as a person and loved, lost, and grieved. Divorce sucks. I can relate. I'm going through one now. Maybe that's why I can't seem to get enough of this song lately. Or maybe it's why I cry through the whole thing. It makes me think of him.....I believe I know how he was feeling at the time. It's been said he was an every man's man. There's so much truth in that. It's why I think almost everyone relates so easily to his lyrics and songs. RIP Mr. Petty. You really do have a room at the top of the world tonight. And you ain't comin' down......😢😞
This is my favorite song of his. I have many but as soon as I heard of his passing this was the first thought I had, you've certainly got a room at the top of the world, forever. He was my Elvis, my world and will always be. We love you so much Tom! 💜
I can see everything tonight....... I got a room at the top of the world tonight....I ain't coming down My Angel Doug went home to be with the Lord and he is in that room at the top of the world watching over me and loving me always as he did here on earth I love this song and will hold it dear to my heart
Tommy has a room at the top of the world forever. I just love him, his music changed my life literally! Thank you Mr. Petty. We sit out by the lake all summer and play these Tom Petty songs every night and cry. I will play your songs till I die.
RIP TOM! Damn this one hurts. One of my favorite artist. Saw him twice in concert and what a show he put on. So funny and such a great entertainer. Your music will live on. A true legend
He performed this song on vh1 Storytellers the day it was released, 1999 I believe. It starts about 25:35 mark. Stopped me dead in my tracks. Sang it beautifully with such an intensity in his eyes. Can't stop discovering all his music.
As far as I'm concerned Tom Petty is upper echelon amongst the likes of Jackson Browne, Willie Nelson, Natalie Merchant, Tracy Chapman and many more true singer/songwriter and poets that I didn't list. Unfortunately, one of the "Last DJs".
Tom, hope one day I can join you in the room at the top of the world. We will drink and forget the problems in life. Also we will have an amazing jam session. Thank you for everything. Rest easy.
back when i bought this CD i fell in love with this song. When i started dating my ex wife she was emotionally hurt as was i and we bonded over this song...5 years later i have been divorced for three and now thi ssong is a mix of hope and despair at the same time. Only the genius of Tom Petty could hit on multiple emotional nerve endings like this.Hauntingly beautiful song by an infinite talent.
@XAbbeldydooX, I know what you mean. Tom Said it was about escape. Not going to lie, some days when I don't have my kids, I try to forget, to numb myself in everyway, weather that is through alcohol, or drugs, and just blitz myself till I pass out. I so want to be in that room and never come down. Peace be with you sir.
such a beautiful song that I almost forgot... thank you Tom for sharing your beautiful soul with the world!! enjoy bliss on th other side, you never have to come down
Tom Petty has always made music that was unique and different from all others. He is in a genre of his own and that's what makes him a great artist. You can't go wrong with his style. Signing off, The Black Man.
I've been listening to TP songs for a couple of hours tonight, much of yesterday. It's very cathartic but man, his death has shattered me like no other. I guess it's because I'm only a couple of years younger and we kind of you know, grew up together in the years. I feel like I've lost an old friend. My daughter maybe for the first time ever has seen me like this, shattered, over something like a musician dying. Bowie was a tough one, Prince that was tough, but Tom Petty? Shattered describes it well. My heart feels so broken. So so broken.
Roschelle McGowan He was only almost 4 years older than me, and has just always been around. His songs and videos came up on rotation, and were always good. There were pop cultural references in movies and TV, even some appearances and voice acting. Like one poster said, it was easy to take for granted that he would always be there, until he wasn’t. This is the worst loss since Lennon.
Roschelle McGowan I hear you. Ditto for me. He was about 10 yrs older than me. I grew up listening to him. The news of his death shook me like never before. I shocked myself with the intensity of my grief over his loss. This was tough.....and even 6-7 weeks later, it's still tough....😢💔. I just can't seem to shake it.
He makes it look so easy, but I guess all the great ones do. Its the honesty that makes it so good, somehow expressing exactly how we feel, without us even telling anyone. After all the great songs, this is the one that speaks to me the most. Shudder.
World without T.P. I'll never get used to...thanks for making our lives more tolerable with the soundtrack to it...know he absorbed the love of his millions of fans. Life so well lived...R.I.P. My brother ....

This is not Jim Morrison etc. : this is a stubborn, ethical man who unintentially (sp) overdosed because the pain became unbearable off stage and for months one imagines some tolerance developed. A small amount over the limit. I think of him as our (all of us) unmet friend. Tx for posting.
evelyn baron couldn’t agree with you anymore than I already do. Absolutely agree. And very well said👌
Me too! I would have given my first born.
Was lucky enough to be working at The Complex Studios in West LA in '99 when Petty rented out our soundstage for 10 days of rehearsals for this concert. I remember that oriental rug. Great to listen to him and the Heartbreakers day after day. Such a great band.
Tom can you hear me? Beautiful soul.
I just love this man. His music just moves my soul. My perfect evening is a nice cold beer, chillin' and listening to Petty. Thank you!!
Yessss. Thank you Mr Petty
Well put Patricia 👏
Amen sister!
I'm with you
You get the room at the very top now... RIP Tom Petty
in 98 my better after 20 disposed of me in a brutal fashion.
First song I thought of after I heard Tom passed away. Missing Tom every single day!
Yes Tommy. You have a Room at the Top. Miss You ❤️ So Much 💔.
The music and lyrics make my heart hurt that you're gone, and cry for these days. You are the greatest that ever lived, and I'll listen to your music every day forever. I've been blessed to have you throughout my life and seeing you play live every time, they're the best memories ever. Thank you so very much xoxo
I always end up here, listening to the greatest who can express for me , my feelings and thoughts. Miss you Tom, thank you for all of your gifts
Same. Just listened to Woman In Love had to finish up here.
Me, too🎼💞🙏⚘️🎸
One of the best song writers to ever live. Your music will live on forever!! RIP Tom Petty
YOU HAVE A ROOM AT THE TOP, YOU ARE IN HEAVEN TOM PETTY WE LOVE AND WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER..R.I.P. TOM .
Saint Tom, what a work ethic, from out of nowhere, developed his talents to The Top of the World. RIP Brother
The world is a dimmer place without Tom Petty in it.
Chick Filet 👍😭
Amen.
👍👍!!
Chick filet soooooooo true
to make a top songs of tom Petty is so hard
RIP Tom Petty. You were part of my youth and I know you will have a first class room at the top of the world tonight. I fuckin loved you!
My dream! Would have kissed his feet . hes the shit!
This has to be my all-time favourite Tom Petty song out of hundreds of possibles, takes me to my special place, like a shortcut to Nirvana. Thanks Tom, I love you
Who else is watching in 2020? This song. This man. His words just move me, again and again. Never gets old. I love you, Tom. Thank you. ❤️
Tom Petty will always be on my playlist.
I am! I cried every day for a year. Still do! A true legend!
Me as well! Tears don’t come as often until you watch his last few months of touring & can see the pain he was in every single step😢
So sad he lived like that to finish out a tour but mostly because he didn’t wanna disappoint his fans!
❤️ my husband doesn’t understand the tears. It’s good to be among people who do. ❤️
Wonderful story. Thank you for sharing.
REQ53
Great story...
God bless you❤❤❤😮❤
I learned this song in his honor. When I play it I feel him.
RIP. Sweet Tom💙💜
Got over a Thousand dollars in the bank
You got that right Mark. He was , is and will always be the Fucken man. He's partying with some pretty damn good people now. Probably tearing it up with Roy right now or at least we can only hope so.
there is just no other that even comes close.. his songwriting is so pure
It's 3am can't sleep - so listening to Tom. He puts me in a better place. God Bless Tom
That's cause he's good at his songs he songs makes me better when I'm in my sad moments
So how are you doing, hope you're safe?
Me too
Tom, you enjoy your room at the top of the world tonight ♡ Us down here, we'll miss you. Rest in peace, music legend. :(
You will live in our hearts forever , Tom Petty.
Tom truly has a room at the top of the world now. And he ain't comin' down. RIP Tom. Will love & miss you forever... :(
You right kat he does has a room at the top of the world I love his song
So how are you, hope you're safe?
+Brian David Stoliker Brian, that was really beautifully stated. :->
Thank you.
Brian - that's beautiful what you wrote.
And you ain't comin' down......😢😞
Truer words have never been spoken! I totally agree with you Brian🎩💔
This is my favorite song of his. I have many but as soon as I heard of his passing this was the first thought I had, you've certainly got a room at the top of the world, forever. He was my Elvis, my world and will always be. We love you so much Tom! 💜
Awesome talent .. You are missed Tom Petty!
I listen to this song everyday. It’s beyond beautiful. RIP TOM PETTY
and RIP HOWIE! 💘🎸
I can see everything tonight....... I got a room at the top of the world tonight....I ain't coming down My Angel Doug went home to be with the Lord and he is in that room at the top of the world watching over me and loving me always as he did here on earth I love this song and will hold it dear to my heart
hes dead show some respect women
@@OWlsfordshire why do some have to call out other commenters? It's mean & pathetic. She's just hating on men I guess.
That's really sweet to say Ramona I also love listening to this song it's lovely
So how are you, hope you're safe?
I find myself pulling up this song more than ever since Tom's passing - I absolutely adore this song, and video. thank you - again.
Same. Love this song. Play it almost daily.
Tommy has a room at the top of the world forever. I just love him, his music changed my life literally! Thank you Mr. Petty. We sit out by the lake all summer and play these Tom Petty songs every night and cry. I will play your songs till I die.
RIP Tom...The world has lost a true master
You sir went down swingin. Thank you Tom RIP
That is for damned sure! He will always be swingin..
Echo is not only by far my favorite Petty album but one of my favorite of all time. Grossly underrated.
Very good album, one of the best ever done
Miss you Tom. Still have a hard time excepting your gone. The day you passed I picked up my guitar and played your stuff for hours.
Good night and God Bless you Tom Petty. Rest in Peace. We all loved you.
61 years old, retired, son grown and elsewhere, crying like a slob, so grateful to Petty for the light
RIP TOM! Damn this one hurts. One of my favorite artist. Saw him twice in concert and what a show he put on. So funny and such a great entertainer. Your music will live on. A true legend
So sad about Tom. Enjoy the view, Mr Petty. You've earned it!!
He performed this song on vh1 Storytellers the day it was released, 1999 I believe. It starts about 25:35 mark. Stopped me dead in my tracks. Sang it beautifully with such an intensity in his eyes. Can't stop discovering all his music.
Miriam Mccray I'll have to watch/listen to that. I can just picture him as you've described. Oh how I loved this man...😭💔
Yes. His face says it all.
As far as I'm concerned Tom Petty is upper echelon amongst the likes of Jackson Browne, Willie Nelson, Natalie Merchant, Tracy Chapman and many more true singer/songwriter and poets that I didn't list. Unfortunately, one of the "Last DJs".
REST IN PEACE GOOD SIR THANKS FOR THE 40 YEARS OF KICK ASS MUSIC>
Tom, hope one day I can join you in the room at the top of the world. We will drink and forget the problems in life. Also we will have an amazing jam session. Thank you for everything. Rest easy.
Tom Petty A true rock legend, who will be missed by millions, Tom your songs will rock on forever. We LOVE you Tom.R.I.P.
I never knew you but always felt like I did through your songs. Your music was always there and will always will be forever. RIP Tom Petty.
My heart is just shattered. I'm In tears. Thank you for a wonderful career.
The call and response lead runs by Mike and Benmont are crazy good.
What an amazing talent he had and this is, in my opinion, his best work. Very underrated. Rest in peace Tom, I'm glad that I was alive when you were.
Miss you already, Tom. You were and will always be a musical legend.
back when i bought this CD i fell in love with this song.
WELL PUT.
I ain't NEVER coming down.
Love him. Love this song. Every memory of my teenage years has a Tom Petty soundtrack. I miss him so much❤️
I'm 62 Toms songs spoke to me so much. So did Jeff Lynne and Billy Joel Armstrong
Having met Tom, I was devastated by his passing.
One of the most brilliantly played solos ever.
He had such feeling in his music. It's sad he's gone. One of the all-time greats!
For the great Tom Petty.
ALWAYS LOVED FOREVER MISSED NEVER FORGOTTEN
You indeed have a room at the top of the world tonight. I hope I can visit that room one day. The world will never forget you or your music, which has touched many of our lives. Rest easy Tom Petty.
My favorite Tom Petty song. I've listened to your incredible music since birth and have been a huge fan ever since I can remember. R.I.P. Tom. Thank you for the amazing gift of your talent that you've shared with the world. I'll love and miss you forever.
This song still brings tears to my eyes.
2022 and still tearing up!

This is the song I’m gonna play for my father daughter dance at my wedding. My dad loved Tom Petty and brought the family to many of his concerts, this song in particular is one I always remembered growing up :-)

Wow -- what a beautiful and at the same time heartbreaking song -- he truly is Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers!
These lyrics are haunting, this evening..... :-(

It really is. 😞
John Lee omg, it so is. One of my favorites....even though it's a heartbreaker of a song💔😭
John Lee Tom said somewhere that he felt ROOM AT THE TOP was one of his most depressing songs he had ever written... Tom Definitely has a Room At The Top Of The World Tonight... R.I.P. Thomas Earl Petty. 195O - 2O17
Oddly, I find it uplifting.
