This song is very special to me. My father was a commercial airline pilot. We shared a love of flying and airplanes. On the day of my first solo flight, he came with me to see me fly for the first time. It was the only time in his 85 years he ever said he was proud of me. And he'd been waiting his whole life to say, "My son the pilot". On our way home, this song came on the radio. I miss you so much Pa.

He officially passed away at 11:40 P.M. surrounded by friends, family and bandmates, this is my favorite Tom Petty song I think all spend the rest of the night listening to him.
I cannot name two TP& TH songs that sound similar. Unbelievable musical talent that will never, ever be replicated. Even the videos ranged from simplistic and minimalist to outlandish. He was musical nirvana.

I used to play this on the duke box in a pub called Lamb & Packet in Preston Lancashire Uk back in 1981 years when a University student. He he …,, best years of my life.
2023 and I'll never stop playing this. It's quite wonderful... interesting video too. Petty is a musical great to me, a natural storyteller who spoke and related to all of us. All of us. That's a beautiful gift.
You can definitely hear the musical genius of Jeff Lynne at work as well!! Tom said Jeff was the best musician he had ever met...modest Jeff didn't even know what to say.
"So I've started out for God knows where I guess I'll know when I get there" Good travels to you, Mr. Petty, and thanks for all the tunes. You were one of the good ones.
Tom Petty is the best song writer ever in my opinion. He has a way of taking your mind on a voyage during his songs. I always drift off while singing along.. RIP TOM
Totally. It's a pleasure to watch the videos that are just as artistic - the dust trails behind the departing car that are just like a rocket's taking off. "Swingin" is another lesser-known gem. Be well Corey.
58 - TP is the soundtrack of my life - this song keeps me dragging on. my daughter got to experience it when I took her to see Stevie Nicks and Stevie sang this in tribute to her incredible friend- my daughter has never been the same - Tom - I hope some day our souls can meet - you have done so much for me
This is not only my favorite Tom Petty song, it's one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. It makes you feel so much, seemingly so dispersant and almost all at once. Amazing song for times such as these. The video is a masterstroke as well. So many decades and events, referenced with a mere scene or frame. The decrepit majesty, ancient crypt solemnity and mournful yet graceful repose of the aircraft graveyard looks like one of the best places to film, I could spend weeks there just listening to whispers of war stories and fish tales... (I think I saw a Grumman Albatross, or what was left of her) God Bless Everyone with Health, Peace, Freedom and Love
This song reminds me about my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battling to cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I miss her smiles, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, and I never miss a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times, there is some pain, I will cry in vain but won’t let you know how I will feel yes, I will miss you to the core! but some times i wonder why bad thing always happen to good people. She’s always in our hearts.
Good bye to our friend Tom Petty. You gave us great music for 40 years and you were never a super star in your own mind. Never a show off, never caused self attention , but always a great musician, songwriter and singer. We grew up together in Gainesville and went to the same high school and although I never knew you, I did get to know you through your music. Rest in peace, Tom
My best friend of 33 years (who has lived with me (platonically) for 25+ years) passed away 2 days ago (blood cancer/'Multiple Myeloma'). For the week & a half before his death, he was being kept heavily sedated (for pain) in hospice & was unable to communicate. The day before he died, I held his hand and told him I love him, and asked him to please send me a sign when he gets to Heaven & gets his wings. *ONE HOUR* _after_ his time of death, this song ('Learning To Fly') came on the radio...& the song that played _after this_ one, was "Learn To Fly" by Foo Fighters. Even if it was just coincidence, these 2 songs being played *back-to-back* at the *one-hour mark* after his death, & my having asked him for a *sign when he gets his wings,* brought me comfort. ❤
I'm so sorry for your loss. I feel your pain. I lost my only son to Cancer when he was 32. He loved that song Learning to fly when he was a kid him and his sister used to sing that song and also Free Falling. Every time I hear them it takes me back to when he was a kid. 😔💔🙏🙏💙💙❤️
Loved this when I was six in 1991 and still do at 32. Love I Won't Back Down as well. Both remind me of being at my Grandad's house on Saturdays. Brilliant days. RIP Grandad and Tom. The good old days may not return. More's the bloody pity!

I got hooked with his music when I immigrated to Canada from Africa, Ethiopia long ago Thanks to Toronto's fm radio Q-107 for hook me with him and others before the internet. Today Tom is alive in my home and my heart thanks to the internet Cheers!!!
Amazing how a song can mean one thing to you when it was released. But now through the prism of time this song takes on a different message. One of Petty's great songs. Simple really melodically.
@@ericforster7396 True. Songs can take me many places. Then and now. Many people remark what they were doing or what music they were listening too when world important events happen. You can't remember one without the other. I still get goose bumps when I hear Boy Meets Girl "Waiting for a Star to Fall". I had been in a new relationship with a woman that eventually became my wife. But sadly we divorced in 2005. I still love the song and now it doesn't bring the old negative part with it. One of my favorite songs is Dan Fogelberg's Make Love Stay. During an acoustic set at a concert he explained that the song was inspired by a book he had been reading by American Author Tom Robbins. Still Life with Woodpecker! The way he could craft a song just like Tom. Simple words, Simple thoughts strung together in meaningful ways. Songwriters often say what we may be feeling at a time in our lives.
Dear Mr Petty, our local radio station used to play this song VERY often when I was a child when it came out. So this song is kinda THE soundtrack of my childhood. Isn't it weird how a singer ""just makes a song" that means like "childhood" for others? I know you died a few years back, but with this song you will live at least another ONE lifetime of 50 years with me. Thank you. And may all the angels fullfill your divine wishes.,...
@Tanner Knaggs Cheers. Same to you. May you live long and prosper. Getting old is a privilege not everyone has. And never forget, follow your instincts.
@@ItsTomJoe...Bingo! The old Irish proverb. Do not regret growing old because many are denied the privilege. When I hear this song it reminds me of my younger brother and sister who are now flying.
I love complicated music showcasing virtuosity...but there's a lot to be said for 4 chords, great melodies (and harmonies) and a story. It takes a special type of genius to make such a great song out of so "little".

This is one of those "Get yourself back up and dust yourself off and get back off the ground" songs - very inspiring.
Thank you Jeff Lynne for this timeless, outstanding Rocksong!!!
Sure and Tom brings it to the core
So many times overlooked. Jeff is really a musical genius.
I say bob Dylan 2nd part
1991, 32 years ago, time flies, but sweet memories behind 32 years ago. 😌
I was then 7 years old child
in 1991.
You can definitely hear the musical genius of Jeff Lynne at work as well!! Tom said Jeff was the best musician he had ever met...modest Jeff didn't even know what to say.
You're gone, but won't be forgotten. Thanks for all the great tunes brother.
There is never a bad time to hear this song.
Eddi Murphy made movies, does not explain Berverly hills, does not..

Rest in Peace Tom Petty, a true great.
If your enjoying this Tom Petty classic in summer 2023, you have awesome musical taste❤
always love him, and with the Wilburys as well, great 4
True😊
OF COURSE, LEARNING TO FLY, BUT I DO NOT HAVE WINGS, AND COMING DOWN IS THE HARDEST THING. LOL
I KNOW!
IF youre here you have a musical heart too
"So I've started out for God knows where
I guess I'll know when I get there"
Good travels to you, Mr. Petty, and thanks for all the tunes. You were one of the good ones.
I'm pretty certain he's got those wings now...
Tom Petty is the best song writer ever in my opinion. He has a way of taking your mind on a voyage during his songs. I always drift off while singing along.. RIP TOM
Try Bob Seger.
Absolutely ❣
@@theloner6063 wise up
Totally. It's a pleasure to watch the videos that are just as artistic - the dust trails behind the departing car that are just like a rocket's taking off. "Swingin" is another lesser-known gem. Be well Corey.
Leonard Cohen, Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot and Joni Mitchell to name a few were better songwriters...and 3 of them were Canadian!
(I think I saw a Grumman Albatross, or what was left of her)
God Bless Everyone
with Health, Peace, Freedom and Love
RIP Tom.
In my humble opinion he was the best ever U.S. male rock artist in history
Everlasting ever great music. Thang you SIR Good bles You.
I miss you like an old friend, Tom Petty.
🙌
😊 👍
R.I.P & thank's for your beautiful Music ❤️

We all need to thank God for creating Tom Petty. Such an amazing musical artist. 👏👏
Yes❤🙏🌅🌞
One of the best
Whichever of the gods need thanked. Thanks. Geezer was marvellous.
7 year old here rocking out 🤘🏻
Losing my home and divorcing at age 65, I really needed to hear this song, learn to fly again
You will prosper like never before

This is an inspiring song, that you have to believe in yourself
"I'm Learnin' to fly, but I ain't got wings" .... He now has wings, and is flying with the angels ... Eternal peace to you Mr. Petty. ...
That was beautiful. I'm heartbroken over his death but what you said made me smile.
RIP TOM PETTY. 😪
Running down the eternal dream...
Amen!
RIP Tom Petty🙏🏼👑
An absolute classic by a genuine rock legend. Easy to see why George, Bob, Roy & Jeff came calling when starting the Travelling Wilburys. RIP Tom
Don't forget Johnny Cash either.
The sound is very Orbison
First song I ever really liked as a child was Tweeter and the Monkeyman
these are my contemporaries. you know. there are a few of us still around. we're the A Team.
You bet!!
One of the best cool dudes of all time. No effort. Legend
I'm learning to fly but I an't got wings. Coming down is the hardest thing. Love this song still ❤
Good bye to our friend Tom Petty. You gave us great music for 40 years and you were never a super star in your own mind. Never a show off, never caused self attention , but always a great musician, songwriter and singer. We grew up together in Gainesville and went to the same high school and although I never knew you, I did get to know you through your music. Rest in peace, Tom
Abe Lincoln this is a good comment

33 yrs of a man and woman living platonically together.... c'mon something happened 😜

I'm so sorry for your loss. I feel your pain. I lost my only son to Cancer when he was 32. He loved that song Learning to fly when he was a kid him and his sister used to sing that song and also Free Falling. Every time I hear them it takes me back to when he was a kid. 😔💔🙏🙏💙💙❤️
Such a special and ever lasting song. Anybody can listen to this and not be moved in some way is dead inside lol
Loved this when I was six in 1991 and still do at 32. Love I Won't Back Down as well. Both remind me of being at my Grandad's house on Saturdays. Brilliant days. RIP Grandad and Tom. The good old days may not return. More's the bloody pity!

Every time I listen to Tom Petty I want to cry maybe because he passed away or just because that’s how good his music is
How about it being because of both plus sadness that there will no more music created by him?
Same and on top of that I very severely devastated I'd cry at least 3 times a week for 2 months and got very depressed and to this day when his music comes on the radio I cry

I got hooked with his music when I immigrated to Canada from Africa, Ethiopia long ago
Thanks to Toronto's fm radio

Today Tom is alive in my home and my heart thanks to the internet
Cheers!!!
Love you and the music forever. Rest in peace
Amazing how a song can mean one thing to you when it was released. But now through the prism of time this song takes on a different message. One of Petty's great songs. Simple really melodically.
For sure. I was 17 when it came out, and I sensed the song's depth, but it helps to be pushing 50 to really get it. Beautiful video as well.
What goes up, must come down.
@@suitinaute You and Isaac Newton must agree!
This guy makes music that makes us feel good. True legend!!
Rest in Peace, Tom Petty. Thanks for all the great music. Amen.

Tom had it all together. His politics were a little fkd though. Most 'rock folks' are somewhat delusional.
I love complicated music showcasing virtuosity...but there's a lot to be said for 4 chords, great melodies (and harmonies) and a story. It takes a special type of genius to make such a great song out of so "little".
Another one of those perfect tunes. Thanks, Tom Petty, for all the great music!
Always getting goosebumps hearing this song, atm it helps me get through hard times concerning my mental health & thoughts...

Just turned 18 in June. Never saw him. Didn't start listening to him until a year ago. Into the Great Wide Open is my favorite album. I have it framed above my computer. He has become my favorite artist. I think about it sometimes. What it would have been like to see him. you older folk looking at these comments are very lucky to have seen him. Crazy how life goes by. Wish I was born a little earlier. My father would tell me stories of Live aid when he lost his glasses. I go to the University of Florida. There are little bits and pieces of him if you look hard enough. Gainesville #1 Son. Rip forever, Tom.
