2017 Toyota Corolla First Drive Review and Road Test - DETAILED in 4K UHD!

  • The Corolla isn't the quickest or best handling compact sedan and last year it wasn't one of the best values either but for 2017 Toyota pulled a surprise out of their hat. By making their CVT and their Safety Sense active safety system standard on ALL models of the Corolla it has gone from middling in terms of value to a whopping 10% less expensive than comparably equipped competitors.
For $18,500 you can get a Corolla S with an automatic transmission, touchscreen infotainment, radar adaptive cruise control, pre-collision auto braking with pedestrian detection, lane keeping assistance and LED headlamps. Driving dynamics still lag behind Honda, Ford and Mazda but nobody else has priced their compact sedan this aggressively..

Picked up a Corolla LE a few weeks ago, and I love it. So quiet, rides well, lots of interesting features. I think the thing a lot of folks don't understand (and you commented on) is that driven in a commuter fashion, the car has more than enough power, and handles just fine. Yes, if you enjoy spirited driving, this is not the car for you. But for most of us, it is a great value.

Thanks for the review, Alex. I purchased a 2017 Corolla SE last week, and traded my 6-speed manual 2008 MINI Clubman for it. They sold me on the safety features, and along with the interior, they're excellent. I this is my first CVT, and it's not bad - considering typical flat, straight Florida byways. The reliability of the Corolla, family-friendly features, and overall value made all of the difference.

people always said Toyotas are boring so Toyota went to the drawing board and made a bunch of their models as polarizing as possible as if saying "IS THAT INTERESTING ENOUGH FOR YOU!?"

Picked up my '17 Corolla SE 3 weeks ago. Love it!!!! Great for driving to work. It will become my daughter's car in about 9 mos. I might get the Corolla Hatch as my everyday car or I might go for the CH-R. Love the reliability and the new look.

I own this car she is a very fast and quite on the road and has power and the seats are very comfy... I bought the fully loaded XSE and I love the fact that she gets really good on gas. I used to have a 2016 Kia Forte EXGDI and I was not happy with it and how it handled.. I buy Toyota hands down.

Active safety technology was expensive to develop, but once developed it is cheap to make, so I fully expect almost all cars in the future to offer it as standard, perhaps except German cars where it will be a $10K option. :)

The Civic is a new designed as it was redesigned in 2016. The Corolla was last redesigned in 2014. Of those 5 cars, Corolla is the most reliable not that the Civic isn't reliable. That said, if you need basic, safe & reliable transporation, the Corolla is the best value.
