    It's worth reiterating that the AMD version does not have an HDMI port and USB4 ports. That might be a dealbreaker for some.

    The AMD Slim 7 Pro has been on sale at Costco for I want to say $1100 or $1200, which I think makes it an even better value. I'm honestly surprised that the Ryzen model wasn't significantly farther ahead in battery life.

      Yeah, most other reviews show the 12700H barely getting more than 4 hours of battery life. Its likely that he only measured battery life for watching youtube, which uses only the integrated GPU. If he had used a CPU based battery life test, there would have been a huge difference, with AMD having nearly twice the battery life.

    • @Android.Paranormal
      @Android.Paranormal ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Wow... $1200 is a great deal! However I will always go with Intel over AMD for as long as Intel has Thunderbolt. Even if its $100 more. Because being able to use a Thunderbolt dock to run multiple displays, multiple other peripherals (keyboard, mouse, mic, webcam, ect) on 1 cable is what makes it the ultimate portable workstation. Without Thunderbolt, its just a laptop.

    Actually surprised that Intel performed as it did vs AMD. Was expecting the Ryzen model to be miles ahead. One annoying thing about the AMD version is that it (bizarrely) does NOT have the HDMI port, which the Intel version does! The AMD version instead has an additional USB-A. I've not seen the AMD and Intel versions of the same laptop have different ports before (notwithstanding USB-C vs Thunderbolt) and the HDMI is a lot more useful than a second USB-A.

    • @justacollegestudent5147
      @justacollegestudent5147 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah it is weird. What I’ve seen is Intel seems to be usually mid priced. Shipping for my dad a 2 in 1 for around $500-600 an Amd ryzen is far better on sale.
      To get the same Intel machine it’s like $700-800.
      And then go up to the $1100-1300 gaming laptop and it’s Amd.
      It seems like Intel laptops are the basic which I mean they are. Intel has the history and long term manufuctor relationships and brand name in the normie mind.
      Theirs also a lot of Intel obscuring the actual performance. I see a ton of u Intel based laptops which perform far worse than Amd u cpu. And the p versions like the 1360p is more like an Amd u which is their lowest end not the hs.
      What’s insane is how flexible the hs is. Be it the 7940hs/7840hs or the 8940hs/8640hs. They can be 15-28 watts low powered laptops/2 in 1 and even switch like gaming handhelds to ultra powered mini pc with a ton more space and high powered gaming pc with 4070-4080 class gpu.
      Intel technically can perform better on the bleeding edge desktop 300+ watts and single threaded but Amd is way better across the board and it’s only when you go above 200+ watts Intel starts to get a slight lead which is an insane load.
      For reference an m1 MacBook uses like 15 watts all included screen cpu memory etc.
      Even a ps5 takes 200-220 watts and the more efficient series x uses 180 watts.
      A cpu by itself having to pull 300+ watts to outperform an Amd cpu only in cpu benchmarks. Real world it’ll essentially never win due to thermal issues and architecture designs that make actually programming for p and e cores properly hard.

    Great review as usual Josh. I have the 6800HS version. Massive discounts on these in the UK recently. Got mine for £1100 with student discount. Lenovo screwed up thermal paste application out of the box so it was hitting 100C and throttling. After I fixed that, it runs great and if you stick it in iGPU mode, battery life is great and almost no fan noise in normal office tasks. Great laptop

    • @tmfmxo
      @tmfmxo ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Do you have the version with 32GB LPDDR5? I would be very interested in the performance difference of the 3050 vs the 680M iGPU in scenarios where the latter can actually use 8GB of fast RAM as VRAM. And existing benchmarks suggest that the 3050 with its 4GB VRAM and small die itself isn't so hot for gaming, except in the literal sense.

  • @tmfmxo
    @tmfmxo ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Hi Josh,
    thanks for briefly getting into the integrated graphics, as I believe we are finally at the point where they are actually usable for 3D gaming.
    This is a huge win for netbooks, as a power-hungry dedicated GPU in my opinion has no place in a device that minimizes power consumption and offers limited thermal headroom.
    I would be very interested in a direct comparison of the RTX 3050 with the integrated RDNA2 680M graphics of the Ryzen chip. Yes, the dGPU still wins in raw performance, but the 3050 actually doesn't do well in gaming benchmarks, so the gap should not be huge.
    The really interesting tests would then be performance vs. power draw and fan noise, as I believe the tradeoffs in this regard do not work in thee 3050's favor. There are good reasons why other devices that have to strike a similar balance, such as the Steam Deck and PS5, all go for AMD's RDNA architecture.
    It is a damn shame that Lenovo refuses to sell the Slim 7 Pro / Pro X with 32GB of RAM without the 3050, as I believe this would be a great configuration for many use cases. 32GB GDDR5 would allow the iGPU to "borrow" up to 8GB as VRAM (twice as much as the 3050 offers) without concern for available memory. But at least you have the perfect device to run these tests on.

    I have the same problem with my Intel version of the slim 7 pro x.
    Fans already kick in when starting windows (loud), make 1-2 minutes noise and then remain silent (off) in web browsing tasks. But when watching 1080p videos they kick in every 2-3 minutes and then they aren’t silent like you’d expect but loud.

As you say in your video, I have found several comments onthe internet talking about the noise that the fans make, apparently, several users report that the fans turn on constantly in light tasks such as browsing the internet, mail or even at rest, making a rather unpleasant noise when turning the fans at full speed. The display is great but it has an issue that oftentimes is overlooked. It looks amazing at maximum brightness with really high contrast, but compared to other devices the contrast really goes down a lot as you lower the brightness, more than other devices.
    This makes it less nice to look at when using in the evening or in a dim place.

  • @MegaAdeny

    Frankly this alleviates any trace of buyer's remorse I may have had about your 2021 recommendation, the Yoga Slim 7 Pro. The 2021 non-X model is just a much more balanced machine perfect for both using on the go and at home. Its screen's higher refresh option is frugal enough to just leave on all the time and its resolution is the perfect sweet spot for me, with the pixels already practically invisible. Its performance is still great, and it doesn't sacrifice battery life, thermals or noise to achieve it. The only area where it tangibly lags behind is the graphics, but trying to fit a dGPU in this tiny form factor honestly just seems to do more harm than good, making the machine a bit of a jack of all trades. Perhaps the iGPU-only version of the Pro X would fare better, but the versions tested really don't seem particularly compelling.

Thus, I need good memory, be able to use multiple tabs/things at once, good CPU, I’m not too worried by the fan noise or heat (unless it causes very very slow functionality), I need to be able to edit clips/videos and also stream using software like OBS. What laptop do you suggest? PLEASE help me out. Please and thank you

    Hey Josh, thanks for your fantastic analysis as always.
    I have a question about the AMD model. I'm looking to buy a new laptop soon and I'm hesitant to go for an AMD model due to the lack of TB4 connectivity. I currently have a 2018 intel laptop that's hooked up to a USB-C dock (I don't even kknow if it's TB to be honest) that is connectted to a keyboard, mouse and single 1080p monitor.
    I will be buying a 2nd 1440p monitor at some point, so my question is could the 7 Pro X (AMD) run a dual-monitor plus keyboard plus mouse via a non-thunderbolt USB-C dock, or would I need a TB solution for dual monitors?

    • @iTzMineCore
      @iTzMineCore ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are only concerned with display output and data (mouse, keyboard, USB) thunderbolt isn't needed. The AMD models supports DP 1.4 alternating mode, pd & USB. So your dock should work fine (if it's based on DP 1.4). TB is mostly needed when u need high throughput, e.g., external GPU etc.

    Have you noticed a grainy look, like picture noise, with these screens on light backgrounds? I get this on my AMD version, and was wondering whether this is normal, caused by an anti-glare panel under the glossy screen, or a fault. Any insights? Other laptops I have with glossy screens don't have this.

    Hey my comment was in the video (it was a joke btw.) also I have the intel model. There are bunch of things im kinda concerned about.. but one thing Im confused about is it normal to have a super smeary display (slow response time)? especially noticeable when dragging the white cursor over a black or gray background. I hope I didnt get a defective display.. their is also noticeable graininess when close up (mostly for white backgrounds)...

    • @justinhalen2126

      I hope someone with the laptop can confirm if their display has similar characteristics.. Also a tip I found for the intel Model to match the AMD gaming performance is two disable two of the performance cores (or all 8 the efficiency cores) in the BIOS.

Hundreds of programs are now incompatible and forget any sort of gaming and, you can't dual-boot or use Virtual Machines. What's all that power for? Final Cut pro?

      What is all that power for? Mac OS can't even run full Microsoft Office. Excel is a toy and lacks features like smart macros. More on the way? That's my point. Right now for many of us the cons outweigh the pros. It's delusional to think an Arm MBP can replace most Windows/Linux workflows. No arm SOC today can beat a good x86 CPU plus dedicated GPU for my workflow.

Unless you are a gamer or m1 doesn't support your primary work app, no x86 processor can compete. x86 processor is inherently flawed. Unless they can change the power draw issue, unplug and run multiple apps + several chrome tabs, you can only use for a few hours. Also, you don't speak for the "rest of us". It seems unless AMD wins single-core performance the Intel version PCs will still be very lucrative. Purely because not that many applications utilise AMD's strength. Apple went their own way and made a huge jump in the power efficiency but I feel like now we'll be seeing only slight improvements in performance for years to come on Apple computers. Still, their achievements will be more than appealing for regular users for many years. If Intel sticks to their hybrid architecture CPU strategy and kick Microsoft in the ass for Windows to take a real advantage of it, we'll see new battery life and performance miracles on Windows laptops in 2-3 years.
