yes i completely agree about the "not wanting to voice something bc you're afraid to be heartbroken" i hate telling people what I want to do when I grow up because it changes every five minutes. i hate telling people what colleges i'm applying to or what i'm trying to achieve with my life for fear that people will judge me and think "why is she trying to achieve that she's not good enough/never will be" and that i'm aiming too high or too low or am not "making the right decision"

What makes anybody "so special"? The fact that they're living and dreaming and loving themselves even though they're living in a society that tells them you have to fit a certain mold in order to be happy and live their life. The fact that they're here as themselves and as a result of their parents and grand parents and great grandparents. The fact that if one person in their family history had made a different choice, they might not be here right now, but since they are, they're going to make their life a good one.
This applies to you. Yes, you. And also to me. And also to the person next to you. The people you love, and the people you hate. This applies to everybody.
~A very wise philosopher named *me*.

mckinley mingacci As a believer myself I think "luck " is the best word we have to describe God's blessings. Because even the greatest Bible scholar couldn't explain to you why not every Believer is successful. I personally believe that some people just want it more than others that is why they get it, because they can endure the hardships and persevere to make it to the top. Too often as Believers we put limitations on G-d. So I do believe luck or Divine Providence or whatever you call it it all means the same thing. Just make sure to give credit where credit is due when you do make it.

yo, i really really needed that at the moment. i spent my whole day thinkging about how I've been trying to avoid being vulnurable for a few years, and how that has kept me from achieving things and talking to people that I actually would have liked to talk to, just in order to avoid feeling that heartbreak. But I realised, that if I ever wanted to feel all those things I'm dreaming about, I'll have to go all out. I don't want to go down without being able to say 'I've tried'. So this kinda gave me the last push to really start risking more and being more open and vulnerable. So for me, a greatly timed video! thanks!

I think what reminds me most, when I'm feeling down myself, that so much of success is luck is knowing that I've "discovered" work by extremely talented people that I can see hasn't gotten the attention (so far) that it necessarily deserves. I also believe that everyone is capable of creating something that deserves to be recognized (even if it takes some practice first) and learning to believe that that includes me too has really helped. It helps me go easier one something that might have ended up being practice (whether I intended for it to be or not) for something better later.

as a person who subscribed to you way back in the day, i'm always very pleasantly surprised to hear your thoughts and feelings about artistry as an artist myself. i've just recently started watching your videos again, and i find that with every one, you give me a little bit more validation toward my own feelings, and a validation for my art. because, yes, i do like my art (i'm a writer), and i can proudly defend my own taste in my genre. obviously being an artist with a mental illness such as anxiety or depression isn't uncommon, but it's lovely to be able to see you representing that section of people honestly and accurately and in a way that doesn't try to exploit us either. thanks tessa, keep doing what you're doing.

I think you accurately saw a negative comment veiled as a question as someone asking for helping addressing their own inner voice.

I think it's a really interesting one when questioning if your work is special or different enough in the arts. I personally just think we're all part of this larger journey of development and being inspired by other artists. Like the artists we look up to also had artists before them they looked up to. It's quite rare to get people who are on the cutting edge of art and who are breaking the mould (really key figures) but they still had people who influenced them. Sometimes the journey is slow but I think it's really good to get a sense of perspective by looking 100 years prior.

"What if you don't become mainstream because..". In the grand scheme of things does it actually matter if you become mainstream, if you still get to do something you love for a job, meet new people, have new and interesting experiences, and share you passion with thousands of people across the world? It's always good to set new goals for oneself, to keep pushing to be the best that they can be, but it's also important not to forget all that you've achieved thus far, and understand that it's not the end of the world if you fall short of the ultimate goal, because you could still land in a very comfortable place.

honestly Tessa, in my opinion what makes you special is your courage to speak about these things. It's so rare for a public figure to not only give your real opinions and thoughts on things, but to acknowledge how you act and feel and how those things change. For example in a video you did a while back you talked about how you used to say you don't get angry, but now you realize you just said that to look better but you do get angry and that's okay. It's just amazing how self aware and how willing you are. That is what makes your whole channel special to me. Every time I watch one of your videos I feel smarter afterwards, like I learned something important. I know this video wasn't to get compliments and reasons why you're special I just thought I should share my thoughts :') keep being special

I know the point of this video wasn't to fish for compliments, but I just have to say, you have become one of my favorite artists and lyricists. Your style totally fills a musical void for me. Music can never be an oversaturated market imo because it's so dependent on the musician's POV and their ability to connect with even 1 person. I'll just be over here, listening to your albums on repeat.

help for the self esteem struggle: use logic. that voice tells you lies, and it's a very emotional thought process. combat this by using logic: the world is so vast, that you and your experiences are completely unique to you. no one else could have fought through your struggles the way you have to make it to this point. life has put so much work into every detail of your world, shaping someone who deserves to show others their special light and take in others'. if saying you are amazing makes you uncomfortable remember this: as much as we are afraid of not shining enough, we are doubly afraid of shining brilliantly, and acknowledging ourselves as such

Just the other day I was thinking of you. I noticed you hadn't made a video in a while and missed hearing from you. you probably don't need to hear it from me, but I love your music! ever since you started I was super excited for you, and you just keep getting better. You and Dodie have inspired me to actually pick up an instrument or three and even sing in public. Your coment about being vulnerable In this video really got to me, and i have to agree. you can't truly live without sharing your soul and risking a little heartbreak, but trying and being passionate is totally worth it.

As always Tessa, I enjoy everything about you. Anything you do, is a total plus to my life. I am a musician/song writer, and I play keyboards and sing. I enjoy listening to what you have to say and appreciate your advice and information. I even enjoy, watching you do your makeup, although I don't think that you need it, because I think that you are beautiful, just the way you are. Love ya❣️

I have wanted to be a writer for most of my life but in these past years when someone had asked me what I want to do I have often said random other jobs and or career paths to avoid the heartbreak later if I don't become a "successful" writer. And I just realized this because of your video. wow.

"Don't chase your dreams. Chase your reality." A quote that I really like that Christopher Nolan said.
I like it because to me, if you think of something as a dream then you have a mindset that it's not very likely to happen. It's just a figment of your imagination that you would like to happen but isn't realistic enough for you to achieve.
Whereas if you actually think about what you would like to do and achieve that is realistic, you should follow that goal and ultimately once you get to that destination you will feel much happier with it.
To put it into context. Say you had a dream to be an international popstar. That's not realistic. You can dream about it, but chances are it's not going to happen. So instead be realistic about it and chase the reality that you can make music and share it with others. Make your music as you would and then offer to perform at gigs and stuff like that. That's a reality.
It can then progress from there. Stating your dream to be a world famous popstar isn't going to be very encouraging for you as the scale is set way too high and if you never achieve it you will never be pleased with anything else you have done.

The best thing one can do for one self is to get comfortable being uncomfortable. In my opinion, that is the only way to live a creative life.

thanks for making so much sense of thoughtzithings. I love how you take me out of my own brain, help me see through someone else's eyes then drop me back into my own head with a slightly widened view through my own lens. Really cool 'landing' on the 'why not me' angle and dreaming big re earning/deserving...

I'd like to recommend the book called *The Outliers* - it talks about examples of success stories and how they got to be so successful (at least the chapter on the 10,000-hour rule). Basically it says success is a combination of luck and time spent practicing
