    You joked about the DM sending the dragons after them because they decided to settle in and not go adventuring anymore, but in the campaign it was actually somewhat similar. Right before the dragons attacked, the party were having a conversation in their keep about how they didn't know what they were doing anymore or why they were doing it. It was a real crisis of purpose, and Matt's poker face was impeccable.

    • @TheGreener
      @TheGreener ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Also Vax lamenting about their lack of purpose, while Uriel was literally giving his speech.

    In the original campaign Grog rolled a 19 (pretty high) to hit the dragon and it was a miss, but the dragon was stationary so they translated the miss into the axe just shattering. Matt said that destroying Emon was simultaneously heartbreaking and liberating, just a full deletion of his creation.

    According to Matt, Gilmore was on death's door and bleeding out when they happened upon him.
    He only survived because Ashley Johnson used her only 6th level spell slot for cure wounds which was pretty risky considering they were still in the midst of it all.

    Everyone bumping on Vex's "close the gates", but it actually saved them precious seconds - Vorugal didn't have open gates to fire his freeze breath through, and took a little time to break the doors down. It helps that white dragons are the dumbest ones, because otherwise he would've perched on the walls and blasted everyone from there - but Vex, who we learned from last season had studied dragons her whole life, probably knew that. As we saw by Pike and Scanlan's narrow escape, seconds mattered.
    This is so much worse than the stream, if only because we get to see the full breadth of the destruction, when before we were limited to just Vox Machina's POV.

    @pauljanetzke ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Yes dragons can talk in both common and draconic. Also, when Grog attacked Raishan, the Diseased Deceiver (green dragon), he rolled a 19 and missed. Live action Pikachu face was the result.

    Glad youre doing the reviews on your own terms, but I will miss the videos every week with your pain at the episodes! :D So excited we are going to get more and more of this show with the news of the Mighty Nein show!

    They almost DID lose Gilmore, you're absolutely right. There was some tempting stuff to loot, and Matt's gone on record saying if they'd stopped to grab the shinies, Gilmore would've bled out in that time.

    Be prepared my dudes. You're in for a wild ride!
    I'm pretty sure Matt said this was his first time creating so much destruction in one of his worlds (but I could be wrong).
    Dominic Monaghan (Archie from season 1) also picked up DND over Covid b/c of being in the show so it's nice to see so many newcomers into our hobby.
    If you have any questions about what happens in this season, feel free to reach out to your local critter, just remind them that you DO NOT want spoilers.
    Is it Friday yet?

    Aside from the dragons names, which are revealed as riashan, thordak, voragul, and umbrysal, something that no one is remarking on, is what Scanlan says after the brief fight with raishan: “ you’re kidding, it’s got magic too?!”

    the rock that had they eye on it was most likely a way for all the dragons to communicate in season 1, when keyleth walked up to it raishan just so happened to take a peak and saw her, calling out intruders and then destroying the stone.

    • @Arborhawk

    Yes, you read right, the CEO of Critical Role plays Grog. :) It takes a really smart person to play stupid well, especially improvisationally.

  • @wtimmins

    Even young dragons are about on par with human intelligence and can speak.
    It was mentioned but easy to miss that these are ancient dragons, which are almost the oldest/most powerful of dragons.
    One ancient dragon is around CR 20, which means it's a stiff fight for four level 20 characters (I think, I'm more used to 3e).
    Also notable is that in D&D there is a general split between Chromatic dragons (red, white, black, green, etc) and Metallic dragons (gold, silver, bronze, etc). Generally chromatic dragons are evil and metallic dragons are good.
    I don't know anything about Critical Role so some or all of this may be altered.

  • @neintales1224

    Yes Raishan's eye was a flashback to S1E2- there was a wall of orbs/crystals and her eye opened on Keyleth, sensing her by them.

    I'm sad that you won't be reacting to all of the episodes, I really enjoyed your VM videos last season, and I was looking forward to seeing your reactions to this one. Totally understandable decision, but I'm sad I won't get to see your faces during some of these moments.

    LoVM season 2 Hype!!!
    Also, have you heard? They recently announced that they've made a deal with Amazon, for doing a second animated series focusing on the party from their second campaign, the Mighty Nein! _And_ in the same deal with Amazon there is a first look film deal, meaning there might be a movie coming at some point!

    I was three when the Black Cauldron came out. I must have seen it in theaters, but did not remember going to see it, but for years had bad dreams about green mist coming out of a black pot. It wasn't until I was a teen and it was finally released on VHS that I put it together.

  • @DanFDTR
    @DanFDTR ปีที่แล้ว

    The axe breaking is a fun way of translating something from the campaign. Grog tried to attack the dragon and Travis rolled a 19 and Matt told him 19 misses and Travis just looked at him shook. Ancient Dragons have an AC of 22 so to even hit them you need to roll close enough to 20 with your proficiency bonus being enough to make your roll 22 or higher. Definitely makes them boss fight material for even a high level party.

    Yes Chech DOES voice trinket in this season, but only as a cameo for 1 episode XD you'll know it when you see it lol also curly hair(sorry im horrible with names XD) made a VERY appt observation in this video that will actually come up in the last episode XD won't tell you what one :3 but its a VERY accurate prediction

    11:05 At the level they are at; No amount of good rolls it’s going to beat Dragon that ancient. 😂
    The dragon they fought in season one was very young. The older they get the more powerful and bigger in size.
    DnD it’s not just about getting good throws. Leaving areas that are too difficult it’s a good strategy. leveling up, finding the right equipment and information to defeat a boss it’s important.

  • @tlaragihai5953
    @tlaragihai5953 ปีที่แล้ว

    Heyyyy!!!! I`m so happy to see you!! And your excitement!
    I love that they kept the scene where VM shelters people in their keep. It was a whole story in the campaign, there they left to Whitestone almost immediately, but the main bits (and dragon`s attack on the keep) are present. It was so painful, both at the table and here to see people who came asking for help - and then dragon killed almost all of them :((
    Uriel`s death hit stronger here also - and his wife`s tears? Awful and sad.
    This season is just everything.

    The players got a cliffhanger similar to ours in stream and between seasons of the series. Before Xmas break, the Sovereign gives his speech, bells start ringing, and on the horizon... Then, Xmas and new years break, lol. Players and viewers both were like, WTF Matt?
    They return to listen and react as Matt is narrating mass death, destruction, and the party barely makes it to safety. Matt- "Welcome to the New Year, mofos" 😂

    So far this season has been much more hardcore and shocking than the first. It’s a shame you’ve chosen not to react to it. If you record anything for the overview you should consider focusing on the last episode in each set (3, 6, 9) because they tend to like to leave us on a cliffhanger ;)

  • @elbruces
    @elbruces ปีที่แล้ว

    A D&D party could run away from the plot that the DM has set up for them, but then the DM could say "okay, you settle down far away to become farmers or get jobs or whatever, maybe have some kids, then grow old and eventually die. Now do you want to re-wind it and tell a story about adventuring heroes, or are we just done here?"

  • @unicyclist97

  • @icefang111
    @icefang111 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    as someone whos seen little crit roll but plays a lot of ttrpgs/dnd the whole escape the dragons felt so cool- like the DM dropping down enemies WAY beyond your level and going "lmao, just try and survive".
    idk about your games but some of my DMs love that sense of danger and a living world where not everything is scaled to the players, and if you fuck around w something well beyond you, you will be finding out. So sometimes running is your best option, tho I do wonder if it was skill challenge esk or if they ran it like a combat in the actual live play?

    • @theanyktos
      @theanyktos ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was an actual combat, however it didn't last nearly as long as in the show. They teleported to their keep 2 or 3 rounds after the green dragon touched down, went back into town stealthily later (to find Gilmore, among other things), and only went to Whitestone I think a day later. There also was a whole subplot with a thieves' guild and a guest character, some intra party conflict over a powerful, but probably very dangerous magical object, and some more exposition on the dragons and some npc friends of theirs that was all cut.

    Great. I can't wait to see you guys watch this season. I wonder will we see you guys watch Velma. I would love to hear your reaction to that show as animation fans. It is a interesting case of the animation and even the voice actors being good but the script needing some work.

    It's your channel, but of all the shows not to react to, it's crazy you chose THIS one, out of all the current crop of series, not to do reactions to.
    I'll reserve judgement until I see what video(s) you come up with to hopefully do justice to this tremendous season of this show, but I'm skeptical that this wasn't an error in judgement.

    Oh btw, every time Grog's cursed sword feeds he gets a power up until the next "short rest". And if they reach max the sword can feed and fail a save... Basically let's just say resurrection would be beside the point. Your soul has been devoured. And ya, it went a bit different, but it was through accidentally impaling pike that grog came back to his senses

    Honestly, I can't understand why THIS show would be one you would not react to every episode for. I understand wanting to be able to do as many reviews as possible, but if it's a question of what will audiences watch and what you should put your time towards... Vox Machina deserves reactions for each episode and there's stuff I will absolutely loathe not being able to see your direct reactions to. Sigh. Oh well.

    @Morpheus451 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really liked your reactions to the first season but this one was somewhat annoying. I don’t know if being in the same room has caused the change but you were just constantly talking, often over dialog, giving the impression that you were missing parts of it and generally not being very interested in what was happening. You do you but perhaps limit yourself to actual reactions during the show and talk more about it afterwards.
