"Cursed swords don't kill people, people with cursed swords kill people." - The National Cursed Sword Association
5:53 If youre keen to jump to this event to see how things played out, its from episode 50 "Best Laid Plans..." at the 25 minute mark.
Context if you want it: they had just left the Sphinxs lair and are about to take a rest before trekking back through the forest. When Grog uses Craven Edge his strength increases as he attacks things, but loses that bonus if he rests. At this time he had skipped a nights rest to keep the previous days bonus and so was tired, and now after reaching the max of the swords power while getting beat up by the sphinx, decides he really needs a rest....
In the campaign things went very differently. There was no splitting of the party, there was no dragon attack on the sphinx, the entire encounter with the sphinx was different, as was the circumstances around Pike getting impaled.
On the bright side that means that things happened in the campaign that didn't end up animated!
Little fun fact, the bird that was killed in the beginning of the episode was based on the bird Matt and Marisha had while the scene was being made. Halfway through the production, their bird, Dagon, sadly passed and now they will now remember their bird by this death scene. Which both Matt and Marisha were laughing so hard at this.

@@rainesrhapsody2934 thank you
Nerd-mode Percy is the best Percy, under all the trauma he's just a lil' dork at heart
So a fun note. Garmelie is voiced by the wonderful Billy Boyd aka Pippin in the Lord of the Rings movies. In season one we had Archibald voice by Dominic Monaghan who played Merry. So we are two for four on hobbits so far. Personally I’m hoping that going forward the Critical Role team will get Sean Astin and Elijah Wood to play roles so we can have all four actors spread throughout the series.
Did you recognize the voice actor cameo for Trinket? You're young enough that you might not know him from his most famous roles, but given the high bear, it was awesome.
Also, the song "Making my way" is more than just an excuse for showing off everyone's singing voices. In the D&D game several of the people had a verbal crutch of "we make our way to the ______" or "as you're making your way toward _____". Then someone repeated it as the intro to that song "A Thousand Miles" by Vanessa Carlton. Since then, whenever anyone says they are making their way somewhere, one or more cast mates sings that line really fast and/or high pitched. So to see a years long running joke, based on a song, be used as the basis for ANOTHER song, is hilarious on so many levels!
In terms of the animation quality, you've gotta remember that the entire cast of Critical Role are voice actors. They work in this industry and appreciate good animation. They're not going to half ass it for their own stuff.
I mean, I've seen better "animation", if you want to speak technically, and they're cranking these out pretty quick, so it often has an anime keyframe style.
I think it's more precisely the art direction that makes this so beautiful. They did sink a lot of money in to this but in relative terms they're working a lot into a small budget, and they're making it up with raw talent, good motivation, and titmouses experience making awesome with limited resources. Every single background is amazing and full of details. The lighting effects and post processing are top notch....
Sorry, I could go on. Don't get me started on voice direction and score.
Percy in the Fey Realm is like a young anime nerd visiting Japan for the first time. The reality may not _entirely_ live up to all his expectations and he may find he's not _quite_ as much of an expert as he thought he was based on the specific materials he had so carefully studied.
This metaphor courtesy of Percy's player/VA, Taliesin Jaffe, who did in fact get into Japanese pop culture as a kid himself in the eighties, and then later lived on and off in Japan for a few years.
I'm so glad that in the midst of all the heavy storylines, they found time to insert this lighter episode. The animation and lighting has been insane so far, and is honestly even better in the next episode.
Speaking of add you don't want to skip, Sam Riegel's from Critical Role episodes - will he turn a sponsored ad into a radio play satire roasting fellow cast? Will it be a dreamed up alternative hackerverse the sponsor enjoyed so much they wound up sponsoring an entire episode dedicated to a one shot set in the universe Sam made up for the ads, complete with Matt Lilliard guesting, reprising his role from Hackers and getting into the role he totally killed it and stole the show? That and much more, lol!
Favorite moment so far was absolutely Percy in the Feywild. He's such a nerd I love him. I adore No Mercy Percy but when he gets to be Giddy, Goofy Percy? I eat it up. We love a tragic white haired boy and love to see him happy.
10:02 I like your "Shipping Goggles: Equipped" expressions.
Appearantly the guy who was in charge of designing the trip scene has done extensive... 'research' on the topic😂😂 He was a guest in the cast watchalong for this episode.
Yeah, they talked about how hard to do the 'blob' monster in this episode b/c it's see through. It's awesome. My favorite moment so far has to be the fight between Vax and 'the Watcher.'
Garmelie is walking pun, himself. He’s a satyr satirist!
Ive been waiting for you to get to this one since it came out because of the trip scene!!!
In the original version, the sword was given a nastier, more sneaky curse. It'd raise your strength by 1 every time it drank blood, but if you went to sleep with a strength of 23 or more, it ate your soul.
In the campaign, Cravenedge wasn't actually destroyed, most magical items in D&D are indestructible. What they did instead was throw it into a little demiplane they could open up.
Ironically, I got a regular ad for raid shadow legends and skipped it as quickly as allowed, lol. I don't have something to advertise but I'm interested to check out who you pick.
Looking forward to both of your analysis after you finish the season, definitely appreciate both of your takes!
Garmelie's drawings are insane lmao
Trinket: Cheech Marin, you may recognice him as tito in oliver and the gang and as Banzai the hyena in The lion king, the satyr: Billy Boyd, you may recognice him as Pippin in The lord of the rings.
The Fae Realm is beautiful but I’m still emotionally destroyed from the end of last episode. Another one of God’s little tests
Well, live actions are created to 1. Make money 2. Make more money from original show 3. Make a little more money from the future projects of the Original show. Fans like it or not Live actions nails it.
