Growing Cherries in the Desert? These Varieties Work!

After many years of experimenting with cherries in the arid Sonoran Desert, I have found two that successfully grow and fruit. They are not the ideal image of a cherry, but the Nanking and Sand Cherry are two viable options for those that want to grow and eat cherries. Let me know in the comments if you've grown and had success with cherries in other arid, hot locations.

Acerola or Barbados Cherry can work in hot climates, but I believe they are rated for zone 9b or above as they are semi tropical and can not take freezing temps. Great info!

I do grow Acerola cherries, but they are in the greenhouse. I've tried Barbados inground, but it didn't survive the winter. I'm right on the cusp of being able to grow it. I might try to plant one of my potted ones next to my house, maybe on the south facing side and see if it makes it. Never know unless you try. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Thank you for subscribing! You should do fine with the Acerola in Surprise. We are right on the cusp down here in 9a, and a microclimate is needed to get it to survive winters. I've killed a few. Lol. I have a handful in my nursery and plan to plant one near my home and see how it does!
