I am from Iraq and this is an ancient vegetable that we've been using for centuries and the way we eat it we pickle it just like your normal cucumber pickle and it tastes amazing so crunchy
Grew these and they werent sweet straight out of the ground and i didnt understand how people were calling them sweet , but after sitting on the counter for about 2-3 months they became absolutely sweet and well worth the wait ,so as far as i have seen if you want it sweet let it sit for a while, i will be trying to propagate as much of these as possible they are so good
I'm convinced that gardening saved my husband's life. Every time I got mad at him I would go out and hoe the plants! True statement-- we did divorce 6 months later but it really helped with my anger issues toward him. It was a win/win situation really. Prettiest garden I ever had!
I think it'd be hilarious to talk about these with a French person :) "Would you like a ground apple?" "Are you making fun of me for how I say potato?"
This seems like a plant with some interesting possibilities... would it be suitable to turn into a kind of “applesauce”? Maybe blended up with some strawberries and canned. It would be pretty neat if it would work that way. Apple trees can take years to begin producing, and it seems like this thing only takes a season.
Hi hello 👋 from Florida here , been watching your videos and , love your videos , I am a Filipino also like your wife , I am trying to learn from and making videos hopefully I can inspire other people
My grandpa used to grow these - mostly for himself, as he was diabetic and he believed those were good for him. The thing is, this is the first time I see a ground apple tuber. I only remember digging up and eating rhizomes.
I have yacon growing at the moment, two are in pots and one in the garden. I found last year the ones in the pots grew more tubers than the one in the ground, guess that’s due to the soil type. I’m growing Jicama this year also which I have never grown before, it will be interesting to see what that tastes like.
Yacon, Peruvian Ground Apple. Cool beans. I guess like mexican Jicama. Looks tasty and very juicy. Thanks. Looking for another item to add to the garden. Keep up the great work.
I tried growing yacon in my backyard garden a few years ago. It didn't survive my zone 9b heatwave. I'd like to try it again in the future. Maybe I need more mulch and water to keep it going through the blast furnace here.
Yummii....The way You show us Harvesing thouse Healthy Food'its Really impress me🌸🌸🌸🎁🎁🎁🌸🌸🌸Will learning from you for sure ones I back to my MOTHERLAND💞💞💞💞
"singkamas" has white flesh while "yakon" is golden and much sweeter, has a crunch like on singkamas (they were probably close relatives), it think they grow it on Baguio :)
Hmm....Ground Apple, aka Yacon,....kinda like the Jicama, Mexican potato but I like the Yacon better, the little hint of sweetness whereas in the Jicama its just refreshing, no flavor, kinda like water, that's it crunchy water! lol...anyways, thanks to you buddy, you've stirred my curiosity and I'll be researching more about this AWESOME tuber, see if it can grow in a subtropical climate, btw so there are 2 kinds, the red one and this light brown skinned one? Uprated, thanks for sharing and here's to your health! :)
Way cool, seems like a lot taster Jerusalem artichoke. Could maybe overwinter in root cellar, zone 4. This is another reason to keep living, the search begins.
i thought it was jicama at first bc those are common here in indonesia, turns out i didnt know what that was but i know now. thanks for the great video!
The term “ground apple” reminds me of the French word for potato “pomme de terre” which directly translated means “apple of the ground”. On reading the title of the video, I definitely thought this would be about potatoes. Pleasantly surprised though.
Just discovered you channel, the ground apple title caught my interest - I had never heard of them before! I live in zone 5, Canada. Do they require a long growing season, and do I start with seeds, or rhizomes? I don't even know if they are available here. Thank you, subscribed!
i actually tried this recently! my horticulture professor said it's a very good grower, she forgot about it but we still got about 15 lbs of ground apples from it!

The digging at 2:14 and onward was very satisfying. Reminds me of why gardening is so exciting, comforting and addictive. 😊

"Would you like a ground apple?"
"Are you making fun of me for how I say potato?"
Oh, that is too funny....
Yes, in French we call this "ground pear" (for yacon)
Ground apple is the potatoe...
And potatoe can be understood as the sweet potato...
You seem like such a chill and humble dude.

That plant looks so good and satisfying, and it must be packed full of vitamins and minerals as well!

Heh.. "Ground apple" was my grandpa's euphemism for poop. Subscribed.
It is a name for horse poop in particular since that tends to have a rounded shape to it.
those stalks would make good baskets
We have that in the Philippines too, also called similarly like that "yakon, yacon". Farmers sometimes turn it into a wine bacause of its sweetness ☺
eson aguilar it's called "singkamas" in our region or maybe it's different?
"singkamas" has white flesh while "yakon" is golden and much sweeter, has a crunch like on singkamas (they were probably close relatives), it think they grow it on Baguio :)

Enter. Great looking kale. I would love some seeds for my new garden.
Do you ever water your plants,or is it just simply by rainfall?
Hahaha at first I thought you was talking about potatoes here in Idaho we eat spuds right out the ground just like an apple dash of salt mmm mmm
I really miss that 😍 here in Philippines we call that yacon 😋 I love the taste. It so sweet and chuncy 😊

Just subscribed. Interesting vid. Thanks! You learn something new everyday!
What is the best way to plant the small tubers? Eyes sticking out above the dirt? Put them completely under ground?
Is this fruit also called yacon?
Can you grow these in Fla? And where would you get the ground apple?
Just discovered you channel, the ground apple title caught my interest - I had never heard of them before! I live in zone 5, Canada. Do they require a long growing season, and do I start with seeds, or rhizomes? I don't even know if they are available here. Thank you, subscribed!

Great video. It really makes me want to try growing Yacón here in southwest florida zone 10.
Very Good!
Just wondering...does the flavor taste kind of similar to a sugar beet? Or closer to an apple?
