Have the same ticking noise when my engine is cold. After 2-3 kilometres it slowly disappears and is not noticeable in the cabin anymore. The consumption is at 6,6 liters combined and after the engine reaches its optimal temperature the car works perfectly fine again. That ticking noise is the only thing that bothers me about my i30! I'll try to contact Hyundai and run a few tests to check if this sounds are really normal. U guys will be updated after I got my results!

It is normal behaviour; apparently caused by a misdesign from Hyundai engineers over the cylinder liner, which makes it rattle a bit like a diesel. However, this will not affect in any shape or form the reliability or the performances of the G4FA engine.

This is a great engine. Reliable and almost constant torque from 2000 rpm up to 6000 rpm.
my 1.4mpi from 2015 i30 (only 50.000km) sounds exactly the same. seems to get a bit noisier with age. Is this the lifters clicking?
Can you also hear the noise in the cabin too? Like a slight tick tick?

The car has a cam chain & not a belt, using the right viscosity oils can help
