Todd Gets Stuck and Dad Helps Him

- Todd asked to play Jingle Ball as I headed downstairs for a few minutes. I told him OI would play when I came back. He waited potentially for me and when I was coming upstairs again got very excited and ran to my recliner and started clawing it. He ended up getting his claw stuck in it and I helped free him and used to opportunity to model the word Help. Todd then asked for and received Cuddles.
Todd is a 6-year-old neutered male cat at the time of this video. Todd and his dad have been learning to communicate with each other since May of 2022 with the help of recordable buttons. We aim to let Todd express himself and tell me his wants and needs. Currently, Todd has 51 words on his soundboard. This channel is dedicated to Todd learning to “talk”. You guys had me a bit teary eyed this morning. I’m missing getting those cuddles from my boy Donnie right now, he just simply won’t give them. We lost his sister Marie very suddenly just over a week ago now, and I have never seen a kitty so obviously grieving. We had rescued them from a dumpster and they weren’t even on solid food, not even a whole pound each at the time! The 17th of this month will be their 4th birthday, but of course, she won’t make it. Donnie now HAS to be near me at all times, needs to see me and talk to me, and of course has looked Everywhere for Marie, but he just won’t cuddle me right now like he used to. Cats definitely grieve, just like we do. Enjoy every moment, especially since their lives are so much shorter than ours.

I am so sorry for your loss, and yes, they do grieve. The last group of cats I had a female , Callie, fell in love with a male, Oscar. They were about 8 years apart, and when Oscar died at 20, they had been together for about 10 years. Caliente was super spicy like Glamour, but she went to our bedroom and stayed there for almost a year, only coming out to eat and use the restroom. I would spend time with her every day, but she could not be consoled. Finally, she came out, no longer spicy and would just sit next, you wanting to be petted. She lived to be 21 and was like that the last 8 years of her life.

Thank you so much for sharing that. I know it can be really hard to talk about our fur babies that we’ve lost, but to me, I find it therapeutic, because they are still so much a part of me. Not that it makes it any easier, but at least I wasn’t so mad at the world when I lost my older kitties that made it to 24 and 26 years old. Donnie had known these kitties too, but they died peacefully at home, so maybe that was easier for him to understand. I just wish I could help poor Donnie, to make it a little easier for him, to soothe him somehow, and I guess for now only my presence and a normal routine will do.

I am so impressed by the ways you figure out how to teach Todd new words! I thought "help" would be a really hard one, but you already found two ways to show it to him!
I try to find as many ways to model the words for him as I can.

Awwww him loves you so much. Love the gums on your nose rub, you've been owned! I didn't hear Glamour, but my Abby-Lu grabs a soft toy every night and walks around making this pathetic meow and I usually wake up to the toy at my bedside? Why? Is it her baby? Is she just giving me a gift? Anyone?
I believe it is a gift from the hunt. Just like an outdoor kitty will leave you a mouse on the doorstep

Awww. But he couldn’t reach the button when stuck 😢. My male cat used to do that all the time. ( I haven’t seen him do it in awhile ). But he would just sit there. So I would come into the room and there he would be sitting by a chair he is arm completely up in the air hooked onto whatever piece of furniture he had stretched to looking like always completely fine and normal. 😂. I like how Todd requested cuddles after his ordeal. 😊.
I was wondering too what's going through his head. "Help" means "I'm stuck" but if I'm stuck how am I going to get to the board?

Laughing throughout _except_ at Todd getting stuck. I knew it was going to be ok, though he might have been recalling a time when he pulled so hard he pulled his claw out. But he calmed down when Dad came to the rescue. Todd trusts you so much ❤ Also, I imagined your wife's laugh when she ordered the poster. That made it all the more jolly. There is a very fine line between using an (almost-) emergency to teach a word and being a heartless bastard that would force any being to endure a painful experience just to model a word. And you threaded that needle masterfully. Bravo!

My cat gets stuck like that all the time! He used to start frantically pulling his arm away from whatever he was stuck on. Because of the way claws are shaped, it can actually help to push forward and up (kind of like pulling a rose thorn out of your skin, if you've ever had that happen), but it's not really intuitive so he didn't understand that. I eventually managed to teach him to jump up when he is stuck on a vertical surface, and most of the time he can get himself loose now! The side of a chair is a perfect example where Todd could possibly pull his claw out by jumping on top of the chair. Sometimes my baby will get himself tangled up in these contorted positions where he absolutely needs my help though. I once had to cut into an old rug with scissors to free him. Makes me afraid to leave him alone. He's not great with his claws.
I've never seen him stuck for a long time, at least not in person or on cameras. I think he can do it. He was excited for Jingle Ball, so he may have been panicking, afraid he'd miss it.
Rick and Morty are favs at our home as well.

That was helpful (!) to see how you modelled for Todd his new button Help. Probably none of us were surprised to see Todd quickly use his new Treat button. The lesson for him will be how often he gets a Treat, or will it be like Morning and Evening Mousey?
We will be interested in seeing when Todd first gets to use his Help button on his initiative and let’s hope it will not be for any emergency.
It will be a morning and evening thing like the mousey. So far he is using it just once a day.

Glamour obviously prefers the bug flavored kibble to the regular kind you offered her upstairs. 🦟🐜🪲
Most of the time, she doesn't eat them. I have to perform a mercy kill. She tends to pull their legs and wings off and leave them there. As I've said, she is spicy.
