Well, I managed three or four weeks with my new Xantia Activa before the inevitable happened! For the record, I'm not unhappy with it at all. In fact, I'm actually still really pleased with it, as when I got it I knew it'd need lots of work, but I threw it into service anyway and it kept limping around in a broken state without an issue.
That is until now, of course. This wasn't even part of the original joblist, either...

When you began by so confidently (and accurately) predicting that of the three possible sizes of pipes, it would be the one you didn't have, I had a cultural realisation. Although I haven't lived in England for more than 50 years, I heard my own habitual pessimism, and knew where it came from. This explains a great deal about what it means to be an England cricket supporter; and why you could turn the footage you shot with the microphone off into the cinematic high point of the video.
Best recovery from missing audio I've ever seen!
I know it's become a headache for you, but the more I look at it I think it's quite an attractiva car!!
I really like it.
They've aged really well
These cars sir are a classic 💯
Balloon Dance......can't wait for that😀
Yup, going to be fun .... in an informative way 🤭
Another highly interesting and entertaining video. Don’t despair as you will sort it out soon. Self deprecating English humour at its very best.
It would be fault free Citroen with the right font number plates Rich. 😄 Great technical video Rich with surprising findings and discoveries such as the BX has two big bouncy balloons at the front. 😳
Another fantastic and informative Video, i do love watching the suspension on the Citroens and how it all works.
Same scenario as mine, good to see. At least it'll spur me on to fix her maybe. Been standing some 8 years now but I've just managed to push her 12 ft up the drive after watching this so at least the brakes aren't stuck on. C'mon get a move on! I'm waiting ....
Wow ,that is a leak , I had one HP leak on one off the loops in the back of the engine of my 89' BX TRD Turbo when a UFO passed under the car on the highway and nick it . but your leak is far worse , it's a sprayer :3 . I had to repair the tube with silver and a torch ...
I'm pretty sure both pipes to the regulator go to the anti sink valve, which (on a LHD car at least) is somewhere just beneath the LHM reservoir. You don't need a ramp to replace them, because I don't think you can reach them from underneath. You will have to take out the air filter box, battery including the battery tray and the LHM reservoir, but access to both ends of the pipes will be fairly decent then. Getting one out is a pig though. I had to cut mine in three pieces to get it out easily.
Or you could just cheat your way around it by getting a '99 or '00 regulator, which only needs one supply pipe. On your car it needs one for the suspension and one specifically to open the valve for the hydractive sphere. I think it's slightly easier to just replace the pipe though
Years ago I bought an Allegro with a hole in one of the Hydrogas pipes. I cut out the bit, joined it with some rubber hose and doubled up jubilee clips. I took it for a pump up then, tongue in cheek for an MoT. It passed!
When I was young a neighbor had one (non Activa) and I remember the car rising, I thought it was the coolest thing in the world, I still love Xantias.
Sorry your cars are turning against you! Must be Spring Exuberance! (No pun intended). Thanks for peeling away some if the mystery. Off topic, I always assumed your workshop was on old railway land, interesting to read up the actual background.
Loved the Pop Goes The Weasel segment, would have equally loved a voice over recreation or commentary too. Not complaints, just appreciations and thoughts.
I still love your videos, especially when you're wren.... no wait, I'm not an American, spannering on cars.
Please can we make "spannering" a verb?
That first part explains why the stiffness button does nothing in my Activa, my Hydractive sphere is ancient 🤣
Highly informative, as usual, but I got distracted by thinking about two big, bouncy balloons.
...and rigidity regulators...
I had the issue a few years back because of the Citroën mechanic, he pulls the hose part of the steering wheel supply pipe and... ta-daa :) Actually at the exact same spot like yours, at mine there was already a copper welding patch(former owner issues), that gives up when the mech pulls the whole pipe down. If you have the necessary materials for copper welding, you can probably fix it in 15-20 minutes (I am writing the comment by pausing the video at 42 seconds, holy number 👍 ). I was not that lucky, the Citroën service did not have the necessary tools for welding, and I escaped from that place by tightening that pipe as much as possible with several layers of fuel hose and 6 metal clamps.
It was quite fun(!) that LHM leakage was not a big problem as long as I did not turn the steering wheel, but the "Stop+(!)" warning came on at the first turn.
ops I just remember that mine is a LHD 2000 Xantia Activa HDi, maybe the placement of the pipes may be different in RHD X1 Xantia's.
At least your Air Intake manifold looks like new 😊
Such a clever system, only the French could come up with it! Fantastic design and handling until this happens.. Hopefully you can sort it soon...
Very well explained sir.. You should teach at College. Do they still have Pollys?
Who's Polly?
@@UPnDOWN Sorry Polytechnic
@@scroggins100 No. They became universities.
Don't start removing the old pipe until you have the new one. That way nothing can possibly go wrong!!!
How's the balloon video coming along? Looking forward to that.
Automatic tyre shine applicator? Great invention.
Haha!
The Americans think the DS is complicated… little do they know 😉 Still one of my “one day” cars, the Xantia Activa.
Top mounts that fail and spear the bonnet - is it trying to identify as a Mk IV Zodiac?
Great to see the suspension lift your mood whilst trying to lower / level itself!
I hope you can get it back to working - it looks to me like it has all the makings of a decent daily driver.
Though my opinion might be suboptimal as, despite your advice, I'm still trying to keep a low mileage 55 plate Renault Scenic with rust rear sub frame, dodgy electrics and a 13.5 year old cambelt on the road ... whilst saving for a new cambelt my next 'small fix' will be to replace the wipers - I'm reliably informed that is the most critical part of a car (and almost certainly why Hilda is giving you grief) 😂😮😂
What a wonderful but complex system.
If it wasn't 6mm it wouldn't be part of the negative period with cars
It's not broken it only needs some tinkering. :)
Front discs could use a skim ?
Fingers crossed back on the road in June…..
I'd just buy new ones tbf
Activa becomes Stancetiva 😂
Hasn't been a video for a while, hope you're doing ok dude.
But what will you drive daily now?!
Thanks for the video Kitch, a bummer it didn't work out with the activa
The S-Max is due to return soon...😬
Now that's sods law for you, a one in three chance and it's the one you don't have.🤷♂️
Good job its not outside your SPHERE of knowledge , but at the same time putting you under some extreme pressure . Oh balls !! , yes , which one ??
Can i suggest we use shop latex gloves not balloons
Won't the fingers confuse the explanation?
:-P
@@tomwinch9107 ahh yes, I also think we need some white board diagrams as well.
@@grumpy2.0, a whiteboard is a good idea, though a glassboard looks more stylish and has the benefit of the extra reflection showing up well on camera, making simple diagrams twice as complex ...
Sod's law strikes again. Bummer.
It's more like a non-activa now.
!Nice video, likes from me!
These things are sent to try us.
This is why I will never own one of these. Ever.
Fancy not sticking your mic on you nob ha ha the pop goes the weasel was funny though, I'm sure you'll get it sorted out though.
I'd swap that for my 25 Yr old car that's gearbox solenoids are unobtainium...
isnt the hydraulic pipe steel as at the huge hydraulic pressures copper can just tear open.....
Nope, copper can take it (but can fracture after a while). Cunifer is fine - fit & forget.
@@UPnDOWN I remember having the pump output pipe fail at the pump end, miles from home.....
Also had the stupid crankshaft pulley disintegrate it's rubber damper 5ml from home loosening the belts, so had no pressure to 'keep it up' but the brakes still worked, talk about uncomfortable...
Is LHM benign to paintwork?
Thankfully, yes.
Subtitles are always welcome... I'm an English learner since 1978! 🇬🇧🤡🇩🇪
They should be automatic?
@@UPnDOWN I meant: YOUR subtitles (because UpnDown)… 🤩🚗💨🇫🇷
😎😎😎😎👍👍👍👍
Prefer "where do we go from here" by Agnetha Fältskog.
You lost me at sphere
It's a car with loads of balls!
10 in fact ...
