- Car restoration has always been my passion and in this video i show you the process of buying a used car which the owner thought had a bad head gasket. In this case, the car is an abandoned BMW e39 5 series. I then show you how to test a car for a bad head gasket including how to do a combustion gas leak test, how to do a compression test and how to do a cylinder leak down test only to find that the car doesnt have a bad head gasket. However the car does have a misfire so i then show you how to diagnose a car misfire step by step including testing the short term fuel trims and how to use smoke to find a hidden vacuum leak in car, which is the cause of the misfire. After fixing the misfire, i then show you a few Satisfying Car Restoration sneak peeks of the upcoming restoration of the car.

bro respawned after 5 years!!!
Why you paused all this time?
Whoa you are right!
I couldn't figure out what you meant till I went to the video's page too see some more of his vids, and whoa! 1st video in 5 years? What the heck? Well I'd really like to see the follow up to this, install of all the additional parts, and cleanup.
With new and even used cars so unafforable, it's imperative to maintain your older car. I drive a 2002 Mercedes with 256K miles on it, and a head gasket leak on #4 out the side of the head. What else can I do? And yeah, I could do with a whole lot of the parts he mentions in restoration.
maybe it took 5 years to make this video?! ;)
@@savatagedude "you cant rush art!" xD
This is something that almost no one from my close friends understand. When I tell them that I want to buy old car, such as 90s bmw, I get responses like "but do you know, that you will end up paying three times as much as you bought it for because it will sit in service every week?" or "do you know that you can use this money to buy something reliable". But that's not the way I see things, they all expect me to think that I buy an old cheap car and be surprised when it breaks down, but that's opposite I think of. I can't wait to spend my time under the car and learn how to work on it and spend time with people who share the same passion as me!
This type of videos are really informative and I love that I learnt something new from them. Thank you!
If you were a dad ,this would be such a fantastic activity with your kids every weekend fixing the car /cars
Its not cool if you need a car to go to work but its broke down
Your smart
you're*@@wandameadows5736
@@qmh355 I used to have in the past 25 Years several BMW E30, an E34, some older VW and so on for use in daily commuting. In fact they broke down each 1-2 Months for several reasons - Coolant / Oil / Fuel line / Tank / Brake line leaks, leaky head gasket, Clutch, Differential issues, flexible disc of the cardan shaft, Fuel pump issues, Air flow Meter issues, Sensor issues, broken rocker arm, broken handbrake cables, ignition issues (distributor or iginition coils), shock absorber, as well as the usual parts of the undercarriage like wishbone, tie rods, not to mention the axle mount rubber bearing and so on. Not counting Rust issues.
In fact: If you buy an old car, you´ll have to exchange, at best immediately, all possible parts which can break down, in order to have at least peace for the next two/three years - and even that is not guaranteed. A car which is cheap and at the same time also in a good technical condition, is - very - seldom. An old, daily driven car is natually full of faults, they don´t get magically better by the time.
I watch a lot of these DIY car repair vids but the way this guy breaks down complex diagnosis and fixes is on a whole other level
This dude diagnosing and fixing his car as easy as watering his garden. And the brand is bmw.

What a legend.
Oh You Americans.... BMW is not that super-duper hard to work with.

I love working on BMW's, everything (well almost everything) is so well thought out. One of the easiest brands to work on
Great to see you back! As a retired former mechanic with 28+ years in the trade, this is the most informative automotive channel I've seen.
M539 Restorations is another good one...from Germany
M539 is pretty meticulous, but props to this guy the edit is clean, and the video very well put together.
Yep totally agree, a great channel.
Indeed mate@@38skippers
@@38skippersWhy the « …. from Germany » ?
The man is not even German he comes from the states
My goodness--do you teach class anywhere? NEVER have I been subject to a more informative self repair channel! What’s higher than a master mechanic? This is God-level!
This is the greatest channel on TH-cam. I've been a mechanic for 32 years. It's nice to see useful information from an experienced mechanic as well. Thank you for putting this out here for the younger generation. They need to be more independent than just spending money wildly. Keep up the good work. 😃👍
Bruh, I am a diy mechanic who’s been working on cars for about 25 years now. I just learned so much from this video my mind is blown. This dude just filled in so many blanks I’ve had over the years. Crazy.
Wow... I'm 68 years old. Been maintaining my cars since I was 15. Super impressed. Best over all diagnostic video I've seen. Scotty Kilmer has nothing over you!!!!
Scotty doesn’t disappear for five years though? I was worried the ma had gone to jail (just worried 😟)
I thought Scotty is complaining all the time.
Scotty is using the same tools and the same methods. But hey, he does not do modern editing.
SCOTTY be like "money pit this, money pit that, bmw legendary inline 6 they are good but is just the cheap plastic they use that caused their downfall,, bmw used it to save money, plastic is crap🤣" and complain a bit more and would not explain things like he this man did
Scotty is always dropping click bait.
As a BMW technician and automotive engineer for 30 years, I came across this channel when he started. I knew immediately he knows what’s he’s doing and expected him to grow. I have no doubt he will hit over 1 million followers at some point in the near future. Well explained and excellent editing to deliver a meaningful and easy to follow and understand videos. Well done and good job 👏.
SO as a crazy BMW E46 (I own 2001 330 CI which was on my lifter for 6 months restoring) and also E39 enthusiast myself, I have to say that the way you film and cut this video and explain stuff is just very amazing. This is extremely high quality content. I just got this video suggested. I 100% waiting for more content and I hope you blow up - you deserve it. Good times friend!
Bro...I can't decide if I'm more impressed with your mechanical skills, or your video and editing skills. 👍👍
I wish all car flippers were like you. You literally fixed everything! Props to you and excellent video
I used do the same but the work goes unnoticed and unappreciated. And you still get low balled nonstop by potential buyers, so I stopped doing it. It's really only worth it if its your vehicle.
Dude I know!! Makes me wanna do this sorta thing just so I can restore cars that were once like 100k and now I can pick up for 1k... 99% of the value lost and I could restore to like new for 2k

What a way to return to TH-cam. If only every mechanic was as in depth and efficient as this legend
Brilliant. What a joy to see someone who can speak clearly, hold a camera in position, focus, edit and just really plan and deliver a classy and informative product. A little poignant for me as I had a lovely E39 528i - a couple of years older than this one but maybe cleaner. Started overheating. Had a bit of work done in one garage which cured it for a while. Overheated again and I left it at another place but he could never seem to get to it. Took it back home and went through some of the steps in the video. No oil in water, no combustion gas in water. Between first garage and home the radiator, water pump, thermostat etc. were replaced. Ultimately to no avail. Suspect some (many?) head studs were pulling from the block even though no detectable intermixing of gas/fluids. Diagnosis based on fact that it would run OK until warmed up then all hell would break loose. Now, the big problem was that I had sold the house and was working in a different city. So, the dear old thing went away on the back of a truck to who knows what fate. I can still smell the leather interior and hear that straight six twin-cam growl in my mind. Wouldn't it have been wonderful to have time, tools and space aplenty to keep her on the road.
I was expecting this to be someone buying a junker, doing some minor diagnosis, and slapping parts on it until it worked. I’ve never been so happy to be wrong, this video taught me so much, thank you, and keep up the good work man
This video may be hands down the best automotive DiY I’ve ever seen on TH-cam. Starting from the editing, explanation and the patience used setting up the props for demonstration purposes - very detailed and concise- subscription earned within first 5min of watching. ACE ! 👍
Your flag caught my eye ... then I had to totally agree with your comment
👍
This video was awesome. Very well edited, with tons of insights and tips like the smoke test, leak tests, calculating air flow, pulling the fuel pump fuse, etc. Really appreciated the extra mile of including the pulled engine to show the head gasket, and the editing to speed up certain portions while still keeping them to make sure you show every step is appreciated (removing & replacing all 6 ignition coils). Thanks for the great content!
This probably has to be the most informative and well put together mechanical/car video I’ve ever seen. Extremely impressive, following the journey!
French guy here. This video is extremely pleasant to watch as it is both informative and without any idle chat. The video montage is well made so that any described operation is very clear. Impressive stuff and very professional work done here. I will certainly come back. Congratulations!
A 2003 BMW is probably worth $1150 especially if it’s not working and running!
Hi french guy!
THIS IS THE BEST DIY CHANNEL I HAVE SEEN IN MY WHOLE LIFE….(and yes I am subscribed to M539) like I feel like shedding a tear as to how good this is! Doesn’t care about chasing clout or popularity! JUST THE BUSINESS OF FIXING CARS and EDUCATING US ABOUT HOW CARS WORK! I am an INSTANT FAN FOR EVER!
I love when somebody buys a cheap car and does simple maintenance to get it running like new. America is unresourceful. Keep up the videos man.👍
Truely amazing DIY video! I've watched MANY DIY vids in my day, and your format, presentation and absolute completeness of the subject is beyond compare.
Most DIY videos leave you with a stack of questions I hadn't thought of before watching, and no answers from the publisher.
But this video answers EVERY question anyone could ever think of, from troubleshooting procedures, to tools used, tool options for the DIY'er (I love your smoke machine!)
parts needed, cost, just EVERYTHING and all super well presented in a short period of time.
Your format should be the template for all DIY youtubers to follow.
Complete, no wasted screen time, completely understandable by almost anyone, and in the shortest time possible. Subscribed! And looking forward to more videos!
I love the way you explain things…
Not just how to, but precisely how the parts should work in a car.
I just found you a few months ago to help me start detailing headlights, thought I had missed out on the last 5 hears. Lo and behold… RETURN OF THE KING!
You do a GREAT job of not only explaining how things work and giving good info like torque specs, but also making it more like a enjoyable adventure we’re on with you and not like a boring mechanic school class (every minuscule step-by-step). I love how you go through all the pinpointing diagnoses (not just parts changing), keeping a relaxed/unworried vibe, and doing genuinely good work on the car even though you could “save time/money” by cutting corners. You’ve earned yourself a subscriber and I’m excited to get into your videos. I feel I could watch for entertainment or good info on a job equally and that’s rare! 👍👍
One of the best auto repair videos I have ever watched on TH-cam.
Wow, I have never seen your channel before.
I am so impressed with your skills, and no bs, everything clearly shown, video quality is top.
I hope you never quit doing this, its the passion holding everything alive.
Professional production values. Clear and concise repair filming--and sped up to keep viewer interest. Great job--you earned a subscription.
But running it--or even cranking--with 3-year-old gas is questionable. But I assumed you smelled it first.
I have NEVER seen a mechanic so thoroughly explain like this guy! Fantastic.
you've shown not only great mechanical knowledge but also presented it so professionally in this yt video format giving us all we wanted to see. perfect video!
As a previous owner of a 525i (2001) I just loved this video. The greatest car I ever owned, but had to sell when I emigrated. Mine still had original battery, but perished hoses to the oil vapor recycling unit, crankcase oil seal was leaking and a pin hole leak in the radiator - not the metal part but the plastic-.
Like seeing an old friend being revived.
i had a 98' 528i, those cars feel solid. even a small thing like the turning signal on felt very heavy and gave you a nice feeling of strong long lasting quality.
overpriced plastic nice
the level of professionality with which you operate and cut your videos together is beyond anything i have ever experienced before. never seen the channel before, instant sub.

Deal of the century! Well done. I have been working on BMWs for 30+ years as a DIYer and I learned things. Thank you.
That was very satisfying to see the direct results of fixing the engine and hearing the idle before vs. after. Thank you for also narrating all the items in the engine, makes it easy to learn!

This channel is superb for a home mechanic in training ;) Thanks for your logical problem solving and great teaching!
Love the fact you're so into every detail . Not missing a thing. Great job.
As a bimmer enthusiast (as an owner at various times an E36, E46, E90, G20 sorry about the last one), I was attracted to your channel by the "$100k-$725" caption, simply to see what you found, for the next 30:40, I never blinked. I agree with my fellow viewers that this is simply the most informative, most technically-brilliant and well-presented car restoration channel I've come across, nevermind the bs they have on network channels which disguise/rip off car "beautification" with "restoration". I know you don't even need to advertise it, but I'll defo CLS your channel. Oh, only one tiny suggestion, if you add "E39 530i" to your caption, you might increase your viewing figures substantially. Hats off to you, bro.
as an e39 owner, I cringed when he noted the blue coolant residue on the engine bay... then fills green coolant 😮
Dude, that's the best DIY video I've ever seen! I'm a huge fan of Streten, but your video has something special that I can't quite put into words. It's like you have a way of making the video so engaging that I don't want it to end. And your teaching style is so calming and easy to follow. Please keep making these videos!

Great diagnostic video and explaining! Awsome to see an old BMW get restored by you like this.
we always hear to stay away from the german brands due to expense of maintaining after warranty but you made it look so easy. The cost of water pump is practically nothing!
German brands can still be esoteric to mechanics, at least here in the US. Different yes, hence the reputation. Bad engineering, no. Too much plastic under the hood, yes, as is the case with every contemporary car.
@@ProjectFairmont The amount of plastic on that engine in a car with a 100k price tag is a crazy. I am afraid to look the amount they would charge to swap out the plastic for metal parts.
