"So it would seem." Honestly I prefer the Santisima Trinidad. But that's for personal reasons. And the Santa Ana is indeed quite beautiful. Spanish first rates may not have been the most efficient ships out there but they were some beautiful behemoths. And if you take into account that the reason they were designed that was was because their primary function was as defensive patrols on the relatively populated mediterranean and caribean seas it makes sense that they'd ignore speed and maneuverability in exchange for raw firepower and imposing size. Not many pirates would have the balls to get close to, much less try to attack, a massive 112 cannons floating castle like Santa Ana, much less the 140 cannons biggest-and-most-heavily-armed-ship-of-its-era that was the Santisima Trinidad. Only Horatio (motherloving) Nelson would be crazy enough to try his luck against that! And he did... and won... somehow. Fucking Nelson. He was either insane or a genius. I still don't think anyone knows which for sure. But he did make it work!
When I look at this all I can think about is the real ship, it's great to have a scale model to really see how amazing they were, imagine having to learn what all those ropes do, and the names of the sails, and going up those masts, what a hard life they lived. Thanks for letting us see it.

Oliver Badstieber indeed there is a mistake at the drawings. I checked the hight in each one and I changed the order. Check out the picture that I have them all in place. If you can't make out the parts I have the original photo that I can send you so you can pick them up by eye.
Hi Oliver, i've just send you the photos. If you need any help just let me know. My kit wasn't complete. It was missing several hooks , some wood (i manage to cover those from spare parts form previous models)and it was missing the metal cover for the bell. It took Artesania some Facebook bad comments (they erased them) and a few mails to send it to me after 3 months!!! Also you won't find a single picture in the manual to tell you where to put the 2 "toilets". When you get there let me know.
I built the Swift 10 years ago, then bought the Enterprise. It took me 3 years to build Swift, I cannot imagine how long Enterprise would take. These ships are really nice to build and do eat up time. Because I deal with chronic pain, I have to limit my time I work on such projects.
Mr. Aliprantis, your ships are totally gorgeous. They show that not only do you have an intense interest in your craft but have the skill, dexterity and incredible patience over most of a year to complete the project. I am currently near the end of building the Artesania 1/16 scale Sopwith Pup aircraft. I am into WW I aircraft and love the art of their structure. But I have learned over 75 years of model building that patience is something that can make or break getting to the end of a long project without messing up something along the way with the quality of the result. Doing smaller projects gives a new builder the opportunity to learn about whether he has sufficient patience to complete a particular size project. I am not sure I have your patience for a single project of that complexity so I pick my projects such that I have confidence I can complete them with adequate satisfaction with the results. Congratulations.
Thank you very much for your kind words Joe!!! True, i have a lot of patience. I love complex and detailed models because i enjoy very much the result. I believe that from the moment you are a modeler you can try something more difficult. I started making plastic models when i was a teenager ,over 30 years ago. At a moment of my life (back on 2001) i wanted to make something really difficult and i bought my first wooden model ship. I still remember all the wrong things i did, all the mistakes. The result was close enough to the picture of the box but not as good as it should be to make me satisfied. So i bought another more complex and another and another ,until i made it to be better than the picture of the box! And now i am still learning new and better ways to make the models more beautiful! Try it, you will love the result!!!
As you point out, every project is a learning experience, not only learning about materials and tools but learning about one's self. In 2010 I finished a full size airplane that took a quick 6 full time years. During large projects where patience wanes or life gets in the way you have to walk away from the work until the right attitude and patience returns, not too much different than having to finally get some sleep at the end of a long day. So many experimental airplanes don't get finished because of ones misunderstanding about what they are capable of, need to learn and the obstacles that have to be overcome like job change or divorce or many other life experiences that affect ones priorities and mindset. Short of getting to the finish line I find moments when I just stop, step back and enjoy looking at the completion of a particular phase of the project. The satisfaction of enjoying this partial success fuels my ambition for going on. I feel you experience the same thing through your photos. So many satisfying experiences.
@@joefriend6720 I understand absolutely what you are describing. Life has ups and downs either we want it or not. That why after a difficult day or week or time, we have the luxury to make a model and look back and see how gorgeous it becomes! @@gladius881 I believe ZHL Models makes it. I do not know if there are other companies as well. The ZHL is a Chinese company. I personally believe that the best companies in making wooden ship kit are Spanish.
Great build John! i would like to comment to those people asking if they can build this or other large sailing ships with no experience. the answer is not simple, if you have confidence in your own skills, or maybe experience in other model building and am willing to research methods then i would say yes quite possibly. From my own experience my first model is a 1/84 scale hms victory that i am still working on after 2 years BUT the instructions are step by step with colour photos, if i had attempted the Santa Ana it would have been a much bigger challenge. look for a model with superb instructions or where there are good video build logs[like johns] which really help if you get stuck. It can be done but most ship modellers would correctly suggest making a smaller less complicated model to build confidence and skill. Its a really satisfying hobby if you love ships. best of luck.
Thank you Andre!!! You said it all, exactly my opinion :) You do not begin with a model of this type. It is very difficult and expensive so the outcome won't be as good as you want it if it is your 1st.
Those are some buitifull ships. Great video. I just listened to an old Paul Harvey radio story. The hull to the Santa Maria is being used as the rafters in a 300 year old barn in Great Britian. When the ship was decomishioned it was bought by a farmer. One of the main supports from the ship has its number still readable stamped in the would.
Thank you very much! Those were great ships, i wish that they could save them up to our days like the USS Constitution (Boston harbor) ,or the HMS Victory (Portsmouth harbor).
A great model, sir! I make only shallops and braceras cause I've got a 4 and a 9 year old and all three of us like to play with them in the sea eventually! Functionality above the aesthetics, as the saying goes...😀
These ships are great to build. I'm building the U.S.S. Constitution (Old Ironsides) it has taken me a while to finish, what with family obligations first thing then another. Started it in 1999 still working on it here and there. My kit was a storm flood kit from hurricane Floyd and had many destroyed pieces but enough to see the boat slip one day. Your model looks great like the cannons. And brass hardware. Somehow mine disappeared.
These ships indeed are great to build! I have made the USS Constitution back on 2002-3. The model was from Constructo. Unfortunately i did not take any pictures during the procedure...It is a very beautiful vessel and i hope one day to be able to see it live at Boston harbor. You have to finish your model, it is a part of history and the most important thing, it is still among us!

My husband makes ships like these, he does not buy a kit, he makes everything himself. Starts with gluing two pieces of wood together, then secures it when dry, starts to make the body,, by hollowing out a hole in the middle. That ends up as the inside of the ship. This is how he starts. My husband has golden hands !
Aye, matey, but will she float? Just kidding. Your skills and patience are uncanny, resulting in an absolutely beautiful masterpiece. Exceptionally well done and you have my respect and admiration!
I would hide the electronics in the display cases behind some thin Mahogany wood panels. Apply the wood on all edges and the whole thing would look much nicer :) One could also make the wood panels curvy and engrave some details (with solder iron e.g.).
You are probably referring to these display cases : th-cam.com/video/79bLUZnBUbo/w-d-xo.html I was making them like these for years and i had 3 problems. 1) the ship was going in from the top because all the electric wiring and spot lights where at the sides, 2) the top cover did not seal the display case as i wanted it to seal 3) because the ship was getting in from the top, it was big problem with the heavy models. The Santa Ana weights around 14-16 kilos (28-32 pounds), this means that there is NO way to get it inside from the top, only from side. By doing that you have to attach all the electric staff to the top and not to the side covers. Also by doing the display case like this i have a more steady construction and the side cover is screwed so the sealing is better. It took me many years of trying to achieve the best display case for my needs and this one is.
I have the Mississipi, my father built it for me when I was young, now that my first son is on the way I'll build him Santa Ana! I wish I had the chance to help my father back in the day, my son might have this chance I didn't.

What a wonderful piece of art, congratulations.
Thank you very much!!!
Many thanks. I've just started building this kit. The English instructions are sometimes enigmatic, so your close-ups will prove very helpful.
Brian Kelty Thank you for your kind words. If you will need any help just let me know.
Well that was thoroughly therapeutic! Many thanks for the upload, and great job.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you very much!!! :)
I built the Swift 10 years ago, then bought the Enterprise. It took me 3 years to build Swift, I cannot imagine how long Enterprise would take. These ships are really nice to build and do eat up time. Because I deal with chronic pain, I have to limit my time I work on such projects.
It's a great way to pass your time. I make a song playlist and i get lost in the wood job! Great way to relax and always pays you at the end!
Beautiful ship, great job !!!
Thank you very much!!!
This is one of the most satisfying video I ever seen
Thank you very much for your kind words!
wow its a beautiful ship and your job is amazing
Thank you very much!!!
I love to see any photos of your work, i am pretty sure that the models of your are works of art :)
Great part of history.. nice ship good job !
Thank you very much!!!
Beautiful model! I greatly admire your amazing modelling skills! Well done!
Thank you very much for your kind words!!!
WOW! Very impressively beautiful!😎👍
Thank you very much!!!
What a beauty ! Years before, i got the 'S.Juan de Nepomuceno' and the 'Santissima Trinidad'. At the moment i'm still at Work with the 'Bounty'. But not in this perfection.
Compliment and Respect !
Thank you very much for your kind words!!! First of all let me wish to you Happy new year! At the moment i am building the San Juan Nepomuceno and i have already made some videos, feel free to watch them!

I watched this for two minutes and ended up in the foetal position...No way in hell could I undertake a build like that...hats off.

Great presentation! After building a wooden replica of the constitution can really appreciate the work done on your model. Feel that anything other then a slide show would take forever to show and view. Thanks for sharing!

@@JohnsWoodenShips holy cow man im a huge history buff especially the golden age of sail. the black pearl is simply fantastic my lady and i enjoyed watching that. my fiance and i work on the same model kits together, ive wanted to make youtube videos of our "projects" lol. can you tell me what company that Black pearl came from?
@@gladius881 I believe ZHL Models makes it. I do not know if there are other companies as well. The ZHL is a Chinese company. I personally believe that the best companies in making wooden ship kit are Spanish.
Stunning feels like an understatement, bravo and thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much for your kind words!!!
Beautiful. Simply beautiful.
Thank you very much for your kind words!!!
Honestly that’s incredible
Thank you very much!!!
I never have to worry about building one ,I shake a little to much for all of those little pieces, thank God. Great job.

Incredibly well done! Amazing.
Thank you very much!!!
Really a stunning model, looks great, man. It's too bad it was discontinued
Thank you very much!!! Indeed it's gorgeous!
Thank you very much!!!
You have to finish your model, it is a part of history and the most important thing, it is still among us!
unbelievable...congratulations...what patience
Thank you very much!!!
perfection. as kid i dreamed to have ship like this as toy :))
Thank you very much!!! As a kid a wanted the pirate playmobil ship, never got it though so now i am making ships on my own :)

i plan on making my own Galleon using wood and matchsticks and got some good tips from the video so thanks for the upload and i now know how to make my Hull and after that i got lots of research and model making for all the parts,, am hoping to get it done within 2 years,,, inbetween making my other Models,, everyone should have a Hobby or Interest,, nothing better than matchstick modelling,, each to their own,,
If you believe that i can assist you in your project fell free to ask me anything!
@@JohnsWoodenShips Thanks John i appreciate the offer and just keep making great video's bro,, i have used some wood and cardboard to make the hull shape but i would like a Fibre Glass Mould shape so i can paper over that to make the hull shape then matchstick the paper and then remove from the mould ect,, if i could get someone to make me a fibre glass hull that would make Hull building much easier and then re use the Fibre glass hull for other ship hull building,, i make battery cases for Vapers the same way, i cover a battery with paper that has a 5mm section in the middle that has no paper so i match just the paper and it is what i call the Turret shape Holder as it looks like the top of a castle tower and i mark the ends of the matches so it can be pulled apart and put together as it only has one correct way ect,, i use to cut them but it cuts into the battery so doing it this way saves cutting into a battery and they look great when done then i re use the battery for the next Battery case,, i live in the UK but i am sure i can find someone who could make the Hull but as a one off piece i would have to pay!! and it would not be cheap! anyway i am now looking for the right paper to cover the hull,, can you recommend a paper i can cut into strips to make the shape so i can match it without the paper bowing or going out of shape?, if you can recommend a paper i would be grateful as i don't want a mis shaped hull ,,,
@@freefromthematrix7323 From what i am reading you must be a great model maker! I'd love to see some of your work! I haven't use any paper for my projects so i do not know a good type to recommend to you.I believe the type of wrapping paper (the brown one you use for boxes you wrap for mail) must be appropriate.

You Have Patience , Time , Skills , Money .
Yes, lots of patience, time, i believe skills also, but not a lot of money.
Found a unopened 1/50 model of the HMS bounty at a garage sale for $30 and it took about $50 to get the tools, glues, stain, and other stuff I needed to complete it's . So it really not that expensive, but the time you put into it is
My husband makes ships like these, he does not buy a kit, he makes everything himself. Starts with gluing two pieces of wood together, then secures it when dry, starts to make the body,, by hollowing out a hole in the middle. That ends up as the inside of the ship. This is how he starts. My husband has golden hands !
I am pretty sure that he is artist, i respect that :)
Great work
Thank you very much!!!
Aye, matey, but will she float?
Just kidding. Your skills and patience are uncanny, resulting in an absolutely beautiful masterpiece. Exceptionally well done and you have my respect and admiration!
Thank you very much for your kind words!!! Building it was a lifetime experience!
I would hide the electronics in the display cases behind some thin Mahogany wood panels. Apply the wood on all edges and the whole thing would look much nicer :) One could also make the wood panels curvy and engrave some details (with solder iron e.g.).
You are probably referring to these display cases : th-cam.com/video/79bLUZnBUbo/w-d-xo.html
I was making them like these for years and i had 3 problems.
Santa Ana is the most beautiful and at the same time the most difficult model i ever made! You will enjoy building her :)
What a great project! very nicely done! Congratulations!! Just one question ...how long it took to build it? :-)
Thank you very much for your kind words! It took me 8 and a half months. I worked every day for about 2-3 hours and on weekends about 8-12 hours.
