Great show - I'm working on a 2008 which has the same issue.

@@ScubaMoto I tried to carry out the replacement as seen in the video, but I ended up with a gap between the windshield and the lips of the cowl. I also bought a new alignment strip and somehow it pushes the cowl away from the windshield. I would be happy to post a picture about it but don't know how to insert the picture into my reply. What did I do wrong?
@@ffytgm The original alignment strips were glued on the edge of the windscreen at the factory. In the video you can see the glue has long failed and the strips simply fall off. I found gluing the alignment strip to the glass was not worth the effort in my case. So, what worked well for me was, while the nuts are all loose, be sure the alignment strip drops below the base of the glass so the rubber flap lays down on the glass. You can then gently or not at all press the strip against the bottom of the glass and re-tighten the nuts. Just be sure the strip doesn't jump back on top of the base of the glass as that is what will lift the rubber flap off the windshield. It's been two years now and our rubber strip is still laying flat on the glass and the alignment strip is just below the edge of the glass and all is well.
Great video going install a new one this week
Great video! Very helpful!
Can you make one showing the rear weather seals? Same issue… they dry rotted. 2015 mini conv.
Thank you so much for posting!
No problem, Thanks for the comment.
Very good demonstration
Thanks for the feedback.
New cowls and alignment strip for my 2009 S Hatchback, R56. I have fought and fought to get the channel on the alignment strip for the windshield to sit in that channel and STILL can't get it. I tried just using it like you did and the rubber on the cowls do not sit on the windshield...they stick up off of it. I'll try again, maybe the 18th time's a charm.
Understood and agreed. Gluing the alignment strip to the glass was not worth the effort in my case either. So, what worked well for me was loosen all the nuts, then let the alignment strip drop below the base of the glass so the rubber flap lays down on the glass. You can then gently or not at all press the strip against the bottom of the glass and re-tighten the nuts. Just be sure the strip doesn't jump back on top of the base of the glass as that is what will lift the rubber flap off the windshield. Our rubber strip is still laying flat on the glass and the alignment strip is just below the edge of the glass and all is well. I hope that helps.
@@ScubaMoto Thank You for your quick reply and further advice. I will try this.
What do you recommend to put on the rubber strip at the base of the windshield so it lasts longer before cracking and breaking?
Plenty of people have had good luck with Griot's Garage 10821 Ceramic Vinyl & Rubber and the reviews look pretty solid. A similar product, Marinamax Ultimate UV Protection, is also well reviewed. Up third would be MEGUIAR'S 15812 Ultimate Black Plastic Restorer as it boasts UV protection.
@@ScubaMoto Thank you for these tips and especiallyfor your help with this video. I just completed the task today. My Mini mechanic (non-dealer) quoted me $300 just for the parts, so was happy to save the dough. 🙂
You're welcome, I'm glad I could help. Congrats on the good savings and good repair. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
Great video thanks so much
Thanks for great video!
Glad you liked it. Thanks for the comment.
thanks for good video. seems that the plastic quality of this model is not durable as its expected.
I agree. These are not the best design and/or materials. The battery hatch hinge is designed to break with repetitive use. It probably has a design life of 90 openings before yielding to bend fatigue and breaking off. Directly beneath it is a direct opening into the heater air intake for water intrusion to cause damage to the control module electronics in the passenger foot well. A common issue with these vehicles. The rubber windshield lip cracked faster than I've seen on any vehicle. And the alignment strip that was originally designed to glue to the base of the windshield while also clipping to each half of the cowl to keep it aligned will likely never glue on the glass again properly while also aligning the two half's of the replacement cowl. My priority was cowl alignment and I put a note in the video description on dealing with that. We can only work with what exists and make the best repairs using it. Thanks for sharing and good luck with the replacement.
Thank you,,great help!
I'm glad it helped. Thanks for sharing.
Greatly appreciated.
Glad it helped.
thanks for the video! just about to do mine
You're welcome. It was well worth it for us. Good luck with it.
Can/will water leak from this? I have found water on my driver's side floorboard (streams from hood latch). It's definitely dry rotted and needs replacement. I've checked the sunroof drains and they seem to be working properly 😊
It sounds like you've isolated the leak to where the hood release cable comes through the firewall? If so, that should not be possible. So it's likely that the cable seal has failed where it passes through. A new cowl will not fix it. Water will always find it's way to that spot. If I knew I had a leak at that location, and my hood latch was working fine; I would simply re-seal the point where the cable passes through the firewall. You will need to remove the cowl as shown in the video to access the pass-through location and apply a sealant. I would likely use a windshield sealant but an RTB or even silicone could also work. Good luck with it.
Where can I purchase a new cowl with weather stripping
Search on the part numbers and you will find many sources to choose from. I also have the part numbers in the video description. Left Cowl: 51132751209 - Right Cowl: 51132751210 .
