It was a weekend course 25 years ago so I thing it’s Torbjörn’s own hard work and willingness to acquire new skills in the craft that have made the difference.

Grandpa had a pair of 2 cm and 2.5 cm that came from his great great grandfather who forged them for his leather working wife. So yes, they last and they are indeed heirloom grade.

Wow! That is just great craftsmanship. I only used the drill press. Locked a bolt in the drill press and drilled a hole the size needed. then ground the bolt down to sharp, size to cut the hole in gasket material, that I needed. Either way is tedious, no matter which way chosen. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Amazing work as always. Your video quality is amazing too. I like that you add in the text letting us know what you're doing and why. Side note. I had no idea birch bark was that dang durable.

The entire workbench is on four vises mounted to the floor, too. And the shop, well, you ought to see how big the vise is that holds the foundation...

A vise with a rotating head isn't expensive.

У нас это называется выколотка. Есть у каждого в семье,вырубали из резины прокладки на водопроводные краны. Это как изобрести колесо. Не ново.
А раньше этим инструментом вырубали пыжи для дробовиков! Сейчас делают картины!! Прогресс!!!

Всё отлично. Рубить нужно на пеньке в срез волокна, тогда работа чище, быстрее и инструмент дольше остаётся острым. Успехов.👍

I liked every bit of that video. Had it been me, I would have maybe done something slightly different. I would have drilled the hole for the clearance of chips and then used a jig with a dowel pin inserted to "roll the tool" against the belt sander to make it perfectly round externally. Maybe that would be better suited for repeat production rather than a 1-piece.

That lathe is really nice, that hole punch looked amazing, EXCELLENT CRAFTSMANSHIP, and GREAT ATTENTION TO DETAIL. I WISH I KNEW SOME 1 LIKE THIS THAT COULD TEACH ME THE CRAFT HANDS ON.

I did. The title says "Blacksmithing - Making a hollow hole punch" but in the end, it's machined. Could have made it out of billet and saved a whole lot of time. I wanted to know....how did a blacksmith back in the day make tools for a leather worker?
You do have a point; we don't get to see how an old timer would forge it start-to-finish, but I never would have given it a thumbs down just on that basis. He showed good forging technique and heat treatment knowledge, and I believe you are mistaken about simply machining from a billet to save time. Forging the blank gives the tool a much tougher grain structure, and it will be more durable in use. Overall I think it was a beautiful video.

Very nice, but your punch will work much better if you punch out on end grain wood, it will give a much better cut.

Welders and grinders are not the really tools of blacksmiths grinders were uncommon in the late 60s and welding was refined by that famous Swede Oska Karlson who worked in a lime quarry.. His welds had less porosity than most and it was due to the lime that inadvertently stuck to the bare wire ESAB the worlds largest welding company that own even Lincoln still honour old Oska by designating all their stick rods with the OK prefix, eg OK 48.00 one of the best allround stick rods available.. I was taught this at the Swedish Adult Learning Centre AMU Lulea Sweden 1996

Ну, вообще-то я тоже кузнец по-профессии, и кузнечное дело мне близко к сердцу, как и любое другое ремесло. Но это и искусство - это две большие разницы. Не все что в Гуггейме мне нравится, конечно, и многое я просто не понимаю. Но сам факт что я не понимаю какое-то произведение искусства не является его автоматическим осуждением. Мой вкус и понимание не составляют высший культурный авторитет - как и ваш.

Att det lägger sig ett lugn i kroppen samtidigt gör det ännu bättre:) jag kikar efter en bra slipmaskin (Knivslip) och är nyfiken på va din maskin heter? Smart med en (antar jag) gradskiva på ”plattan” delen å verkar stabil! Tack igen å sluta aldrig göra fina filmer💪💪💪
