Forging to shape is fine for mono steel but for a pattern welded steel the more grinding you do the more pattern you expose. Both are the right methods for their materials.
Love seeing creativity in cannisters. Lock washers are an interesting choice. There are so many possibilities to achieve unique patterns, even mosaics with a clever plan. New sub, looking forward to more. Keep going.
I think that is the most beautiful knife I’ve ever seen. I have the Internet, so obviously I’ve seen a lot of knives lol. Seriously though, it amazing.
Your commentary has vastly improved😊 I think your confidence level is awesome as well. I like that you love to challenge your skills! Im STILL dinking around with mono steel when i have time😂 Love your stuff Bro!!!
The twist sounds interesting. I feel if i fold it it would just end up minimizing the patter just like when you stack and fold for pattern welded billets the more you fold the tighter and smaller the pattern gets.
No. If i feel its too long and thin ill put a board underneath it before i clamp it for extra support. If the knife is on the thicker side i do without the board.
Looks great! Sometimes hard to keep that core centered with powdered steel jacket, I believe cause it moves easier under the press when forging. Hope you get your press fixed soon! 🔪❤️
@@JPsBladeworks that would be cool..i do really wondering to know if you combine all wastes into one blade with so much mosaics. I will waitin that video ✌️😂
I use an OBM 2x72 Grinder. Its definitely a bang for your buck. Its half the price of other brands and does the same thing. If you want to build one yourself id look into getting a revolution kit with house made. Ive wanted one but i dont have the space in my shop for another.
Glad this project worked out for you, and I assume when you said you were test-etching in muriatic you meant ferric! Personally, traditional random pattern has more appeal to me, but to each his own.
Yea i meant ferric. I caught it in the editing but decided to leave it in there for giggles. I like random as well but i really like to experiment and play with it
Hi! First of all, your knives are amazing! I really want to support your work, so as a graphic designer myself, I recommend that you work with a professional graphic designer on your logo. The current logo doesn't translate well onto metal surfaces like the knife. It seems it was designed with paper-based media in mind, which is why it's not quite effective on metallic surfaces. That´s all I have to say. I love what you do. 😊
I like the way the coffee made everything blend together, especially how the patern in the steel matched the micarta in the handle. It made the handle very interesting to look at.
@manuelrubio1957 i do but i dont upload them onto my website often. If you have instagram you could hit me up if you want this one in particular we could work something out.
It is a pretty hefty commitment. Even for me when i made mine and that was when materials where considerably cheaper than they are now. But it is great to have one around
Yeah, you shouldn’t of. Drove that many holes. It’s in the tang and that’s just gonna be way too easy to damage the tang and that’s hard to tell whenever inside my car and stuff so basically what could happen is you don’t realize what the tracking all the way through the tank from those holes and one day, you could swing it or chop something it breaks it flies back at you. What’s happened to me before knives like that and it’s not fun.
Yea a couple holes isnt going to do that plus its to small to use as a chopper. You might use it with a stick to club it but thats it. So i dont think there would be an issue
That yellowish coating on them at the start is Cadmium plating. Being a toxic heavy metal, I hope that it was disposed of properly. (and honestly, you could probably just let it alloy in with the steel)
@@MarkATrombleyyeah, the majority is zinc based. And yes, mil-std still requires cadmium. Just like we were some of the only ones still using halon fire extinguisher bui’s hers on the flightline. Super nasty shit to mess with for sure!
Curious I see a lot of TH-camrs who do blacksmithing and they always cut their shape out for the night they kind of defeats the purpose of forging don't you think I mean Forge that tip just saying
Your opinion is valid but thats a negative on my end. When i see forging is the right way to go i forge it. When stock removal is the best option i cut it out. Sometimes i cut then forge. The methods exist for a reason. My main reason is distortion of pattern.
Once the check clears lol but on a serious note i just ignore them and mock them back. I mean i could humor them and reply a long answer to why what they say makes no sense but its better to keep it short and sweet.
Cool idea, but I really prefer to watch smiths actually forge out the blades rather than cut and grind the shape, 3/10 looks good, though.
🍪
Iv always been a fan on full tang on anything
Pin of shame for you.
I love that this got pinned
Forging to shape is fine for mono steel but for a pattern welded steel the more grinding you do the more pattern you expose. Both are the right methods for their materials.
As an old guy, it's great seeing what can be done with power tools. Beat-up old blacksmiths would *love* a power press and metal saws.
The press is a life saver. I couldnt do half the things i do without it.
I've never seen someone pinch the can open and pull the billet out. That was so cool to see. That's a beautiful knife and you are a craftsman ❤️
Thank you. I try to get it out as easily as i can. Its not always that smooth unfortunately but i will better the skill.
Yeah that was cool😊
Your work with that cannister was amazing I've never seen something like that before. And the pattern was great excellent job.
When you do as many canisters as i have you learn a trick or 2. It doesnt alway work out though 😅

@@JPsBladeworks I can’t wait to see more of ur work buddy
I’m digging the contrast with the handle and pattern
Yea looks good
Man you're quickly becoming one of the most talented smiths on TH-cam!
You know man i take that to heart because im super mid compared to some of the makers ive met. Thank you for the kind words.
Have you experimented with having the core wider than your pattern to make sure you don't have any crossover?
Ive never done it. It would be interesting to try as long as i only weld the ends of the billet so i dont get any weld on my cutting edge.
I was thinking about/wondering the same
Does anyone else just want a hydraulic press? No reason why you need it just want one i your garage just in case?
Its fun to squish things

Id do more monosteel myself but unfortunately it doesnt pull numbers on youtube. People like the wacky stuff. Thank you for the compliments.
Fun project. Using washers is an interesting idea in a canister. I've never tried it but I think I will now!
Go for it. If you need any tips dont hesitate to ask.
There are 1000s of cool things to try canisters Damascus with. Nails, screws, bolts, staples, sewing needle, fishing hooks the list is endless!
Wonder what this would look like if it were folded or twisted on itself before doing the insert?
The twist sounds interesting. I feel if i fold it it would just end up minimizing the patter just like when you stack and fold for pattern welded billets the more you fold the tighter and smaller the pattern gets.
@@JPsBladeworks I can see that being a concern, still a very well made and nice looking piece. I'd be proud to wear it on my hip and show it off.

the first pattern looks like alot of skull from handle to the blade and it looks so cool.

It rarely is and if its possible to bookmark it i definitely don't have the skills to do that.
Wow, that turned out pretty fine blade!

hmmm could ask / request for a knife made from all the offcuts you probably have laying around?
Ill be making one soonish
Wow, love that knife, I’d spend good money on buying that. You’ve got yourself a sub!

have you ever snapped a blade hand sanding since it isnt fully support in your jib?
No. If i feel its too long and thin ill put a board underneath it before i clamp it for extra support. If the knife is on the thicker side i do without the board.

Which is the hardest type of steel to make a knife , sword etc ?
Not sure. All steels have their ups and downs. Straight ball bearings with no powder is really difficult. I havent been able to get that to work yet.

What grade of steel are the washers? Are they made from high carbon steel?
Everything i saw while researching leads to some kind of medium carbon alloy.

Did we can't use the westes of grinded/cutted billet to be another blade?
Im saving them to use for a grave yard damascus in the future.

Very nice, great vid. Why do you spray wd 40 on it?
It helps with keeping the steel oxygen free and it burns away and leaves a thin layer of carbon. Its the same as dipping it in kerosene.
