In 98 Nintendo Power had a challenge to see who could get the fastest time on Greenwood Village. I spent a whole weekend mastering it and taking a picture of the time with a disposable film camera and going to a 1 hour photo to develope it, then go to the Post office to get a envelope and stamp to mail it away to Redmond, WA...... they never posted the results. I still think about that 26 years later.

Definitely one of my favorite games of all time! The game was overloaded with charm and had a lot of challenges and cheat codes to give it replayability. I loved the character designs, it even debuted Banjo and Conker who would go on to have their own beloved games. The soundtrack by David Wise is legendary, with Frosty Village, Pirate Lagoon and Hot Top Volcano being among my favorite video game tunes. I really enjoyed how there were different themed worlds to race in, how there were three different vehicles, the weapon power up system and boss character races, as well as a battle mode for when you didn't want to race. One of my favorite little bits about the game is how each character has their own personalized variation of the character select theme (like Banjo's being played with, well, a banjo!) and how the main game theme is a medley of all the character's unique instrumentals (as is the boss race theme).
My only real complaint about the game is just the fact that many of the tracks feel so short, especially with boost chaining. I enjoy the races so much but it's kind of like playing 200cc Mario Kart, where it's over so fast, you barely get to enjoy the track before you've already hit 3 laps and left the CPU in the dust. There doesn't seem to be as much CPU rubber banding in this game as there is in Mario Kart and the CPU doesn't seem to interact with you as much (they rarely upgrade and use the seeker missile when you're in the lead, for example, and there's no Blue Shell like item to heavily punish someone who's breaking out far ahead). Otherwise, I just wish there were a couple more battle mode maps, especially for the battle game that's like Balloon Battle in Mario Kart. I would kill for a remaster of this game on Switch. At the very least I hope it comes to NSO soon.

I was so disappointed by Mario Kart 64. I remember discussing with my friend what we expected after mastering Super Mario Kart, and of course we thought it would be even more chaotic with verticality added to the mix... More items, more short cuts, all the stuff we had loved discovering in SMK. Almost none of that was there... There are some good courses, sure, but it's so ... pedestrian compared to SMK.
But then came Diddy Kong Racing, and our wildest dreams came true. Creative course design, weapon upgrading, an adventure mode, bosses... It was absolutely the best.

Just a head's up, if you let go of the accelerator button as you go over a Zipper, you get a bigger boost (green). Also, after any boost, you can then time repressing the accelerator button when your vehicle's exhaust has cleared to extend your boost. You can also tap the accelerator button instead of holding it to make your kart go faster (only works on karts, though)!

    This game is a classic!
Despite some issues I had with it, I wish the series would continue!

Here's an idea for a final hovercraft stage in the final world: "Solar Slingshot" - You race in space but the craft behaves like it's on invisible water. You launch from Earth, past Mars, through the asteroid belt. You zoom past Jupiter--dodging countless moons--and the rings on planets act like waterfalls that zoom you up, down, or to the side. The section near Pluto is icy and ends in an abrupt hairpin turn with boosters pointing the opposite way, creating a slingshot of g-forces. You then rocket all the way to the sun and dodge flames, avoid the asteroid impacts on Mercury, and navigate the haze of Venus before dodging Earth's moon Luna to reach the finish line.

Played this so many times as a kid and adult and never noticed that if you are in a Airplane and use the ground/car boosters your landing gear comes out to touch the booster!

this is a game that deserved the same treatment as the crash bandicoot racing one, a complete remake / rermaster!
Also Ryu, consider taking a look at Baba is You, you recently played a mario maker episode based on it.

I think this and CTR were the best kart racers of the time, this definitely being the best Nintendo racer for me. I also grew up on this as a kid, but you seem to remember so much more. I think the only mechanic I really remember was the whole "release A before hitting zippers" thing, which I didn't even learn until AFTER Wizpig 1, where it's arguably the most useful.
EDIT: Also, they did give this game a remake with an online mode on the DS. I used to go to McDonald's after school and play multiplayer on their free Wi-Fi daily. I could go for another one though.

Perhaps on another day Ryu should tackle Adventure 2 - specifically its Silver Coin challenges. Not only is the world mirrored, its SCCs are considerably harder. They put some of them WAAY off course!

Ahh I remember playing this. Never owned it back then, but a friend did. Still this difficulty doesn't hold a candle to Mario kart (for the SNES). Still loved watching you crush this

Never had a 64, and only got to play a handful of games. This does look closer to CTR than Mario Kart though. CTR being my personal fav of the racing kart games.

The drifting in DKRacing is very similar to CTR and then there's the exploitable world with progression that's similar to Crash racing games too. CTR is sort of taking DKRacing and adding a sprinkle of Mario Kart back in.

11:30 I've been thinking about what if the next Mario Kart game is a bit like Diddy Kong Racing, but with the scale of something like Forza Horizon or Drive Club. Perhaps not a single big map, but a series of islands/zones that have 4 race tracks each. Each Island would have 4 tracks and a battle map in each that you're able to free roam around and collect things. Unlock different vehicles which have their own collectables around the zone. They could even add some "Pilotwings" type of challenges with the Power Glider/Gyrocopter/whatever flying vehicle(s) they include. After completing all the track and getting some of the collectables you unlock a boss race to unlock the next zone.

Great video - nostalgia on! I’d like to see you play it through in the “time to lose” -mode, though😎 (Type in “time to lose” or maybe it was written together “timetolose” as a code.
