"We will win the Champions League one day, if the players here stay" - Gerard's words turned out to be correct, many of the players who came through under him won the final in Istanbul. What a manager and what a person.
Sadly, Owen already left the team for Madrid whereas Liverpool finally won UCL in 2005. Very unlucky for Owen. Also, Gerard was no longer a manager for Liverpool in 2004-2005. He's been replaced by Rafa
@@DaveWallerLFC Can u really blame him for wanting to go to THAT Real Madrid side of Casillas, Bobby Carlos, Zidane, Figo, Raul and Ronaldo? I think not!
I understand why he thought that team was a better option but he didn't handle his departure that well from a Liverpool point of view, running down his contract, meaning we didn't get a fee that reflected his value. So I don't have sympathy that it didn't work out for him in terms of us winning the CL the following year. A feeling compounded by him joining Man Utd later, showing that he wasn't bothered about his Liverpool legacy.
Rafa won the CL with his tactics and signings like Alonso and Garcia and placing Carra at CB. The side Gerard created that season 2000/01 was a mirror of itself in 2004/05, it was rubbish really.

Houllier never got enough credit for what he achieved as Liverpool manager he should be in the banner along with Shankly Paisley Fagan Kenny Rafa and Klopp
Houllier built a brilliant team here, solid defence if not goalkeeper, balanced midfield and 4 brilliant strikers who were all different. It was his signings and some questionable decisions that stopped taking us to that next level.
Cheers Dave. I had the DVD originally and watched it many, many, many times! I was in my first year at uni this season and that run-in, in the spring, on the ale most days was absolutely glorious!!!

RIP Gérard Houllier a real gentleman. Former French teacher at Alsop High school an adopted scouser. A fantastic season, rode their luck a bit, didn't have the team to topple Man U especially the defence but still a great squad.
Being a scout from LFC and finish your career over ere itself, that's called loyal heart & soul from a player for this club, such as Stevie G and Jamie Carra. If I miss some others, please mention wivout hesitation.
These era of LFC was underrated & very unlucky. Based on paper, I still think this LFC squad had much better side than the 04-05 one. Kinda like 2007 line up. It's a travesty how this LFC era couldn't win some CL trophy in early 2000s before the 04-05 season where they finally won, without Houlier, Owen, Heskey and Fowler. Nonetheless, the 2005 LFC got the better goalkeeper, Dudek, making the team went any further with the inferior line up on paper
Good Liverpool side unfortunately went down the pan in 2003 , won the European cup in 2005, then Benitez produced a very good Liverpool team in 2008 and 9
No disrespect to these lfc generation but I still think the 1983/84 LFC was a better treble achievement as they won European cup(UCL), League cup & 1st division league title(EPL's predecessor). To think the 83-84 was the first treble in LFC history before this one but easily forgotten, under appreciated & overshadowed by this 2000/01 season histories..😐
Dave have you got any of the season reviews from 1993 to 1999? I've particularly wanted to see the FA Cup final journey in 1996 and the Cup Winners Cup in 1997.
@@DaveWallerLFC They may be dodgy but I still appreciate watching some of the old seasons. So if you could upload any of them soon I would much appreciate it.
I became a Liverpool fan in 1999 but still interested in the good and not so good seasons before that. I enjoy football history and seeing the ups and downs over a long period. While Liverpool had many frustrating and disappointing seasons, those seasons are still better than what most clubs have.
Yeah, we actually had two seasons were we won three trophies, but United fans say they don't count, well, they would have been more than delighted to have won three trophies during their lean years.
Houllier's reign turned sour after 2002, he made some horrible errors in the transfer market and his judgement was off, who starts Biscan at centre back alongside Hyypia ahead of Carragher if Henchoz was injured?. He basically destroyed his own creation with terrible signings post 2002. He should have sacked for signing Diouf and not Anelka. Sold Ziege, Barmby, Berger, Fowler and we ended up with Cheyrou, Diao and Diouf. Initially I think Heskey was a poor signings as well for £11 million in 2000, which would be something like 60-70 million today and his average in the league was 6 goals per season.
Maybe cut him some slack for what happened after 2002 given that he nearly died in 2001 and came back to work much too quickly after that. Heskey was great in 2000/01 season but sadly coudn't maintain that level.
@@DaveWallerLFC I will forever be fond of him and grateful for the fact that he brought professionalism back and European success to the club after the party boy era. It's just a shame that he thought after 2002 he had to make so many any changes to a side that didn't need much repair, he could have carried on with the same side with a few more signings here and there. If we only signed Anelka and Duff and kept a hold of Fowler and Berger for a couple of more seasons, even Barmby as well.
The players we had in 00/01 should have been the basis for a title winning side The names we had like Babbel , hyypia, henchoz - Murphy and barmby and Gary Mac were in great form ,ziege was demonised a bit for the Leeds 4-3 game , hamann , gerrard, Owen , fowler Smicer had improved from a dodgy season the season before But his lack of faith in litmanen and not playing him as an Attacking midfielder was baffling As was not signing anelka He made bad errors in 2002 as we all know
Hi... I've just found this channel and I look forward to looking through everything. Is there any chance you have the full season reviews from 96/97 97/98 and if there was one 98/99? I have the first two on VCR but no way to play them, and have never had the third in any form. I'm desperate to watch through every season I've been supporting the club back to back... so if you could help with these three seasons I would be forever grateful. Thankyou (if not, having 99/00 has got me a quarter of the way to ticking off the ones I need!)
Hi Martyn. I do have those 3 videos, but no plans to upload them at the moment. The 98/99 video was a shambles, in keeping with the quality of that season, from memory. You can get them all on DVD from this website footballontap.webs.com/seasonreviews.htm (the website is nothing to do with me, but I've used it many times and it's great).
This is gonna sound really bad, but personally I didn't rate houllier as a manager made some really poor signings deuf ect not keeping anelka letting fowler go to Leeds, not building on that treble cup success of 2000/01 ok we finished 2nd to a great arsenal side the next season, but never really built on it , however that treble winning season was brilliant so can't take anything away from houllier for that respect! & ime a die hard liverpool fan YNWA 👊❤
He came back much too soon after his heart operation - putting the club ahead of his own health - and things were never the same. He was great before that and was responsible for much-needed modernisation of the club. And even the weaker squad he left was the basis for the 2005 European Cup win.
I know dave maybe thommo should've taken over because he's record over the time when gerard was ill was pretty impressive, respect to houllier though because he nearly died for the club , maybe he did come back too soon YNWA 👍
Thommo did very well, but I think that was probably partly because everyone was so motivated to do well for Gerard. I think the medical advice is to have a month's rest for every hour of heart surgery, but after an 11 hour operation Gerard was back attending matches at Anfield in 5 months, and it seems as though he was involved behind the scenes from very early on. If he had taken a proper break, I think it's possible he could have carried on at the level he was at before. Your original comment said you didn't rate him as a manager. I can only assume this was based on his last 2 seasons in charge, which were poor admittedly, but no one would have held that view in 2001 before he got ill.
It was dave them last two seasons were terrible like I said before made some really bad sighnings just weren't liverpool players ime afraid itwasa shame how it ended
