  • A home-made season review video of Liverpool's 1987/88 season - one of the best in the club's history. Official seaon review videos started the following season, so I have put this together from the available footage.
This video would not have been possible without help from Dave Chantry, distantvoices and William Gittons. It would have been infinitely harder to do without the amazing website that is www.lfchistory.net . I have also used footage from Newcastle United 1980 - 1994 Video's, Liverpool Supporterklubb, También Nos Robaron El Fútbol and itnsource.com (which sadly no longer exists). Thank you all.
If anyone knows where I can find footage of the missing goals please get in touch.
When I started this channel there wasn't a lot of footage of Liverpool's 87/88 season on here, so hopefully this video and this playlist of longer highlights goes some way to rectifying this (along with the videos that other people have uploaded in the meantime):

Even as a United fan I’d rather watch this than the crap that’s played today. Have to admit some of the football played by Liverpool that season was unbelievable. We finished runners up but 9 points behind and were never really in it. I think the goal against Arsenal stands out for me, the one where McMahon chases to keep the ball in play. Proper desire.

I meant modern football as a whole. A game where anyone with enough money can get their filthy hands on our clubs and sometimes strip them of their assets and other times chuck enough money at a club so they win virtually everything. Not about who’s playing crap now or anything like it.

ROBERT DEAN same here when you lot were finishing lower down than you were accustomed to. We are the 2 biggest clubs in England though so it’s always going to be us on top and then you on top. Football is cyclical. It’s your cycle of winning at the moment.

This was the most delightful season I have seen.
    Beardsley the magician
    Barnes the wizard
    Aldridge the hitman
    Kenny the maestro.
Only surpassed by our last 2 seasons under Klopp.

Was at loads of games that season (was right behind the Anfield Road goal for Beardsley’s wonder goal v Arsenal) but never seen some of that footage. Amazing to see again how McMahon bossed the midfield all season and Beardsley was a little magician. Barnes - different class all season - if he was playing today, analysts would be drooling over him every game. What a legendary team.

Now As a arsenal fan seeing Liverpool dominate in the 1980' s was difficult at times yes Liverpool dominated in the 1970's to but cant remember so much however Liverpool played quite brilliant football particularly during this season. Seeing Arsenal win there first title in 18 years On 26th of May 1989 at Anfield i was so happy and that was a brilliant title race the only time in league history which with division one and premier league is 121 seasons combined did that go down to the team with the most goals win the league. Since that time Liverpool have been my 2nd team and i felt sorry that they had never won the premier league after 4 times runners up 5 times 3rd and 7 times in 4th place in the premier league but finally after 30 years there going do it and deserve it despite whats going on with the corona virus and ill be so happy for them

No chance. 89', heartbreaking of course in many ways for LFC, that league title ending will surely never be beaten - or even come close to ? The top two teams, level on points, sepearated only on goals scored, going all out for the title, bettween each otherand the winning goal coming in the 92nd minute? Yeah, insane to see the number of 'meaningless' matches taking place during the season, that seemed to feature many first team players.
I think the more steady pace of the game back then helped. You could get through most of the season with a small squad, rarely changing players. It also looks crazy to only have two subs on the bench ... Considering these days it's common to have 1-2 minor injuries forcing players off the pitch most matches.

This 1987/88 Liverpool side was 1 of the greatest sides l ever seen in English football, and Liverpool had great sides before this season.

The football this team played was incredible. Such a shame we weren't able to compete in Europe as we'd have no doubt added to our European cup haul. Only the Klopp team of recent years has been anywhere near this level for us.

Labour of love - very impressive. From a United fan. This was a good season for us but that Liverpool team was so far ahead of everyone else it was a one-horse race. Do you know if any footage exists for some of the games (e.g. 34:53)? I think pretty much every first division game was recorded by this time but maybe there were still a few that weren't.

Thanks, I appreciate that. It took a lot of work, but hopefully it was worth it. As far as I know there were still games that season with no cameras. ITV's new TV deal the following season meant there were cameras at every game, but up to 87/88 it was patchy coverage dependent on the games TV companies decided to send cameras to, plus any club recordings (seemingly almost non-existent in Liverpool's case, sadly).

@@DaveWallerLFC we were lucky at United that we got a season review video every season starting in 1985/86. Club recording and only our goals for the first couple of seasons but it was amazing at the time!! I got my first season review video in the United club shop on the forecourt at the first home game of the 1986/87 season, maybe a bit later, 2nd or 3rd home game.

Hi Ivor. Thanks for your comment. This video has all the footage I have in terms in goals from that season. As far as I know, there were no cameras at the Oxford game or a number of other home games in 1987/88 which is a real shame.

This squad still hasn't won a league title, but some of the men of the 1988 side didn't get the chance to win the European cup, which hopefully the boys of 2019 bring home on Saturday. The official video for this season was called The Mighty Reds (th-cam.com/video/qxwYcid_uSM/w-d-xo.html) and had the full 90 minutes of the 5-0 against Nottingham Forest. I made this to include highlights from all the games where footage is available. The soundtrack of this video, taken from the BBC Official History of Liverpool from 1987 (th-cam.com/video/u4LZ3KSav9U/w-d-xo.html), is "Atmosphere" by Gaynor and Anthony Sadler. The video with a soundtrack by the Christians is Team of the Decade (th-cam.com/video/TvYLKiZm40U/w-d-xo.html).
