Maybe I was quite young and naïve back then but I really thought that Liverpool team under Houllier had a good chance to win the league in 01-02. Unfortunately we had a poor Dec-Jan and Arsenal put together a sensational run and were just too hard to catch. Still watching this vid and seeing Owen, Heskey, Gerrard, Anelka etc all firing brings back good memories of one of our better PL seasons in that era.
Great upload mate. From a Gooner that season was a special one for us, one of our greatest ever sides however that Liverpool team was a great side to watch, one to rival your team from 2 years ago. Thompson did a great job, season could of very easily derailed after that, however I reckon yous would of won the title that year if Houlliers health was in tact
Arsenal beating us at Anfield had a very big bearing on both sides for the rest of the season. Especially as Arsenal had a poor recent record at Liverpool. Ultimately we dropped a few points early/mid-season which were extremely costly; losing against Bolton and Villa in the first few games was more damaging than expected at the time. No shame in finishing 2nd behind that Arsenal team though. Just a shame we didn't get past Leverkusen and have a chance to play against that special Real Madrid side in the final.
@@WanderingChin Even if Liverpool would've got past Leverkusen in the quarters, they still would've had to beat Man Utd in the semis in order to play Real in the final. You did beat Utd home and away in the league that season though, so Liverpool probably would've been favourites. A shame we didn't see a modern Liverpool Utd clash in the Champions League, 2002 was the best chance of that imo.

Great upload. I have to ask though. What is the reason for certain goals being blocked whilst the other goals from the same match can be shown? Doesnt make much sense.
Thanks. It seems to be fairly random, which is a bit annoying. Sometimes the same goal gets blocked on one video and not another; sometimes the blocking happens automatically, sometimes it happens after a video has been here for a long time.
How do you watch Anelka tearing it up like he did and then NOT sign him ... to instead spend huge money on a relatively unknown player ... Houllier made some truly insane transfer decisions after his surgery ...
The decision not to sign Anelka wasn't based on what he did on the pitch. It was his agents using Liverpool's interest as a bargaining tool for negotiations with other clubs. Houllier wasn't convinced Anelka was 100% committed to staying at Liverpool. Signing Diouf was obviously a mistake in hindsight, seemingly explained by Houllier's illness meaning he couldn't do as thorough a check on him, as a player and person, as he would have previously done.
@@DaveWallerLFC Houllier's judgment not to sign Anelka was still the wrong one. Diouf was signed based on one match in the WC and he was bang average at Lens.

Should definitely have kept Anelka and was gutted when we didn't take up the option and he ended up at Bolton and scored against us then ended up at a great Chelsea team. Another mistake by the Hou that year. Fowler 1 Anelka 2 but still much love 💘 to Houllier no doubt he loved Liverpool. YNWA
Yes, it's copyright. As I put in my reply to your comment on another video, I think Houllier's role in improving the team and the club was massive. If you think he's good and Rafa is great, is this solely on account of winning the Champions League? On this basis was Shankly merely a good manager and Fagan great? What are your definitions?
There is something very funny and odd about middle aged men dressed in full football kits that i just cant quite explain.... Gary McAlister being the prime offender here... Also Danny Murphy despite him probably being about 20.
