Some artistic license was taken 😉 I wanted to share the story of saving the worst condition Commodore C64C I've seen. Perhaps it was used to play a lot of "Dig Dug"... The fact that one more beloved C64 isn't lying is a landfill is the point I hope people will ultimately be left with.

It was like saving a half-dead, skinny, hungry puppy with all kind of parasites and letting it grow into a beautiful, loyal and happy dog.
Well... I've actually turned it into that sort of story with my new character, Kama-Dore. (Which is a computer-wolf based on a C64.)
Clearly this C64 was only used to play Dig Dug...

This reminds me of the oil soaked VIC-20 the 8-bit-guy restored. Have to wonder how on earth these systems get like this.
If I had to guess on the oiled one, due to the amount and the evidence it had been in use during, and after, I'd guess something involving a mechanics shop, parts list look ups and data logging. Because the modern laptopsI sometimes service at the local Chevy dealership suffer the same issue. They do replace the keyboards when they turn black. I've been gifted (by a service manager telling me, get this shut out of here, when you go) a bunch of serviceable ancient mechanical keyboards that I repaired and sold off for some pocket money.
I think this is worse. lol
I think it's because it was a cheap versatile machine that served a good bit of industrial purpose. Crazy the variety of mishaps these things have survived.
That was a brilliant archeological rescue. That poor machine must have been in a landfill, for sure. What an amazing resurrection. Well done, Pete. Thanks for sharing.

I wasn't too surprised to see it power on. When I was growing up we were poor. But some how my parents manage to get me one. It was very expensive. But it was the only computer I had for a full 13 years. Once one of the keys stuck, but was just dirty. No other problems(physically) ever.

What a versatile machine. The more of these videos I watch, the more I wanna get my hands on one even just to restore and tinker with the fm synth chips (with sid2sid) and circuit bend a bit. I know this isn't even an audio type video but that's where my head is right now lol. Love the videos man, keep up the awesome content.
I've seen worse. I work with old electronic organs and it continues to baffle me where people put their once impressive and expensive instruments when they don't like them anymore: Damp atticks, garden sheds, garages, cellars that occationally flood, pighouses (true story), sometimes even outdoor. I guess it's the same with computers: When people consider it a piece of trash it will usually be treated like trash and will often become trash if it isn't saved.
OMG you have discovered the only modern computer that is likely to survive WWIII other than the Russian Valve based computers!

Catching up on a lot of your old videos and always enjoy the restoration of these commodore computers. It makes me want to buy a C64
This guy needs to do voice narrations for documentaries.
By the way it's possible to run circuit boards through dish washers without soap for cleaning without damaging them, I've done it myself, you just have to make sure you thoroughly dry them afterwards. I'm a collector and restorer of coin operated video arcade games and you see a lot of extreme restores like this in that community, check out the forums on KLOV.com if you want to see some, there's a lot of techniques that are good for both hobbies.
Maybe he does 😊 If you rent Avengers: Infinity War and turn on "Audio Description", you might recognize the voice.

Wow that was amazing!! I couldn't believe that it fired up as is! I fell out of me chair too! LOL🤣🤣 I was wondering in the shot near the end I noticed that the pin in the joystick port were bent a little. Did everything work on the 64? All the ports and slots? I am blown away by this! just goes to show how tough these old machines were!! Thank you for keeping them alive!!!!!
Was pleased to see it boot, I have seen C64's go through extreme situations and still soldier on. One of my old old machines was urinated on by a "supposed" friend while it had no top case and was powered on and running a disco traffic light controller, it just didn't seem to notice even though it was controlling 12 channels of 240v A/C. So I know under certain circumstances a good c64 may as well seem bulletproof. Nice resurrection job :)

Unfortunately not, mores the pity. But that little machine soldiered on for four more years running that traffic light rig despite once spending a night sitting in a puddle of piss with it's main board open for the world to see. So I can't complain too much. :)
Luckily for that machine, your supposed friend obviously has a lack of electrolytes.
Anyways you should have rubbed his face into that puddle, so he won't do it again...

Man, I really need to look into getting this guy to help me with my C64, the thing is caked in dust, and needs a new power supply, but I can possibly replace that easily. Oh and, yeah, the part where the 64 was turned on and was working just fine shocked me too. It’s an Australian, German, English, American Christmas bloody miracle!

Thanks again for an amazing restoration ! btw, the acronym you are searching for is "FCC-CESD" - "Federal Communications Compliance - Consumer Electronics Standards Division", at least, thats the case in the US. The laws govern safety standards and design certifications for consumer electronics, like our badgerized friend, here.

Something I've found that works really well for protecting old traces, or just keeping contacts on the bottom of boards from shorting out in general is nail varnish. It goes on so thin that you barely see it, but it's an amazing insulator.

Holy shit, I've seen some horrorshow PCBs before, and fixed a few myself, but this one is a whole new level of scary. The fact that it actually worked in that state is just amazing.

I love how you do Jan Beta and Retro Man Cave... Jan I have communicated with on many occasions and is a nice guy.. I'm a Commodore 64 owner that has had many Commodores over the years, more so in the 80's.. Had a Commodore 16 and a 128 back in the day and would love to own again "Nostalgia" The C64 I have I refurbed, I got it from a shop in Canterbury in Kent called Level Up Games.. It looks so nice sitting here in front of me, the SD2IEC is a god send but I still like booting up the old cassette tapes "Nostalgia" .. Anyway I enjoy your videos and good job on a very beaten up C64C.

FCC,
aluminized carboard is acceptable for blocking RF, it has the benefit of one side not conducting and being a little more rigid.
I could ask a cow-orker, he worked on them I think ^^!

RF interference has never been a real issue for these old machines (or new ones) though. Losing these RF shields is fine, especially when they're often in such terrible shape. Often they're thin papery things that you can't easily remove intact, as well. I've ripped out a few doing restoration work on old computers. Never felt very bad about it. Also threw out the fragmenting rubber keyboard mat on my Apple IIc. I think it was for spill protection. I'll just not drink overtop the machine.

when i come across rusty parts in my refurb consoles i soaked them in evaporust remover it works great and its pcb safe meaning you can put the hole pcb in this stuff and it does not damage it just removes the rust.

Really neat!! Thanks for the video and the cool refurbish! I just would like to know how many chips you had to replace? Since there was no blinking cursor after first startup (or was it a photo 😁?) I assume, that you at minimum had to replace a CIA chip? What about the SID? Did it still work well? All channels?

here in argentina there is a group of people called MePeS who loves this computers. even there are old are really expensive the C64 kind. also it is a region of the world when x86 PC clones reing supreme.

How do people spraypaint cases? I spraypainted my pc case once and at corners it started to wear off and get "chips and dips"... looked ugly. How do you prevent wearing off?

I've used such neon paint, but it fades quickly when exposed to sunlight. After a year or so it doesn't look good anymore.

That paint won't last long with much use, but it does look neat.
Where did you get that Power Supply mate?. It seems to me that since I made my own one, everybody is adding my leds panel screen to show current and volts. I started making this kind of PSU's with the A1200's ones, but back then it was a volts meter that I used. It wasn't my idea either, it was Gibs in France. He was the first ever but with an original PSU. I made the first one ever with a new PSU.

You could have just immersed the whole thing in warm soapy water and brushed it clean there. Then a quick rinse in the sink and let it dry.

Not really a fan of that key paint color, but otherwise nicely done. I think it's fine to do some mods to cases when it's a machine that was dumpster bound to begin with. If you hadn't taken up this task, it would have just remained dead. Now there's one more C64C out there.
