    Thank you Peter for another marvellous presentation and in doing so , keeping alive the works of such wonderful artists . I find it incredible just how entwined with such historical events the lives of those featured truly are and I also find it fascinating , that the more closely studied , just how revealing history can truly be ….

      As a "youngster" who used to be stuck on drawing anime with frequent regularity at one time lol I’d suggest learning more about said manga’s artists, which more often than not admit in interviews that their styles were influenced by western illustration (eg Dragon Ball’s Akira Toriyama), classic Disney (eg Hayao Miyazaki), etc.
      Seeing that this sort of western art isn’t celebrated in any media directed towards us, anime will maintain its exciting and inspirational status -- building that bridge can do wonders.

    • @evanriddle1614
      @evanriddle1614 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Lydiaaah This may not continue to be the case and yes it appears anime is here to stay. The young generation is crazy about it. But for the present time it would seem to remain a genre of its own. Mr Beard's videos are fantastic aren't they?

    • @Lydiaaah
      @Lydiaaah 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@evanriddle1614 It does seem to be its own genre, yes, but that’s because western animation has been lacking for the longest, and western CGI animation rarely inspires draughtsmanship from teens. One simply has to watch a fight scene from your usual anime (eg One Punch Man) and put it side-by-side with celebrated hand-drawn western animation (say, Legend of Korra) and there’s simply no comparison -- anime is alive. Same for modern comics vs. manga.
      As for Mr. Beard’s channel, I’m new to it but it does seems great! I just wish he slowed down the pace a bit -- I think it’s a disservice to the artists making that many works go by so fast. There's no need to show that many imo.

      Hello and you may have noticed I try to steer as clear of societal issues and ills as much as possble, and stick to the less contentious subject of the work itself. But it must be conceded that racial inclusivity was on nobody's agenda on either side of the Atlantic in the period covered by the series. When I first starting working in the 1970s heer in Britain I had to ask the client if it was OK to have some black characters in my illustrations.

    What a wonderful, cozy channel! And you sound like a (much more) collected Alan Moore lol!
    Might I suggest that you reduce the amount of works displayed, slowing the pace down while zooming & panning as you did around @7:53 in order for us to revel in the piece? It’ll make our mouths water, driving us to search for more. As for Sewell’s current lack of recognition, seeing as he wasn’t a member of the Society of Illustrators nor part of their _Famous Artists School_ correspondence course, he simply faded away like so many in the same position.
    Finally, even though he wasn’t an illustrator, could you tell me *anything* about Mikhail Mikeshin's works? I can only find his _Coronation of Alexander III_ painting which looks like a mix of Moebius and Mucha before they were a thing. I simply refuse to believe that that was his only painting lol.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello and thanks for your response to the channel. The problem with slowing down the pace is that it means I either show less work or make the videos longer. As it is average viewing time is only around half of a typical video. So I feel obliged (reluctantly) to cater to the remarkably short attention spans of many viewers. I'm sorry if this is less suitable for more thoughtful viewers but at least you have the option to pause the video or better still from my perspective watch it again!
      Regarding Mikeshin's art I had never heard of him until your comment. I looked on google and there seems to be a reasonable amount of his work to view, but most of it seems to be sculpture.

    • @Lydiaaah
      @Lydiaaah 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@petebeard There are rapidly successful channels that only show only a few (or even just one) paintings for 15min-straight, such as _Great Art Explained._ Don’t cater to them, especially when you yourself feel reluctant about it.
      Lingering on just a few would have more staying power and would respect the artists’ works more. And constantly pausing the video breaks a nice flow. These are just my two cents, ofc.
      And thanks for taking the time to help me out with Mikeshin btw!

      Hello again and thanks as usual. I had never heard of freeman previously - I don't think he was that popular in Britain. And thanks a lot for leading me to David Catrow's illustration. Again, I had never previously seen his work.

    Being a newcomer to your series, I am still viewing some chapters. In case they have not Bernarda included yet, Would you consider these two artists: Alberto Breccia ( 1919-1993) and Dino Battaglia ( 1923-1983 ) .

      @petebeard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello and welcome to the channel. And a very big thankyou for those two names. Sadly they were both born too late to qualify for the unsung heroes series (only those born up to 1910 are eligible). But I am very impressed with both, and I had never heard of either. I have a video called 'between the lines' about black and white illustrators and I hope to make another one. When I do these two will be included. So thanks again - I always enjoy seeing the work of illustrators I was unaware of.

    I look forward to every video that you post! Thank you so much for the research and work that you do to produce them. I need to start over from the beginning as I have done some skipping around in sequence and may have missed some entries. In the past week I have been desperate to find more info on an American Illustrator named Gary Lund. He apparently illustrated Harry Nilsson's "The Point" storyboard, developing all of the characters based on Harry's acid tripping dreams. It all was then animated into the cartoon/program. There just isn't that much out there about Gary Lund after his work with Harry Nilsson. I imagine you have already covered him in one of your videos. If so, can you direct me to it? THank you so much Pete!!!

      Hello and I think I was in my early 20s when I first saw The Point and I loved it and immediately bought the album. I had no idea that gary Lund had any involvement (in fact i can't even remember who made the animation). But thanks for jogging my memory. And the good news is that as well as an entry and filmography on IMDb there is a website - www.gary-lund-artwork.com with all kinds of work and a biography. He is also featured at illustratornate.wordpress.com/tag/gary-lund/ with images from the booklet that came with the album.

    Great Series! Hoping for more to come … Have you considered to include Horst Lemke who illustrated Erich Kästner's works after Walter Trier's death?

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello and thanks for your positive response. And thanks for suggesting Horst Lemke. I was completely unaware of his existence so I'm grateful for the chance to admire his work. Sadly it seems he was born too late to be included in the unsung series, as I had to stop somewhere in history or I would have been completely overwhelmed. And 1910 is the cutoff point. A pity but I will be surprised if I live long enough to finish the names I already have waiting to be featured.

      @@petebeard Hello Pete. I wasn't aware of 1910 being your cutoff point. Since you can't include Horst Lemke, here's another of my childhood heroes: Fritz Koch-Gotha, who was born at the end of the 19th century, so he might fit. And I definitely hope that you will outlive your list by many years.

      @@norbertpautner377 Hi again. It was somewhat of an oversight on my part not to set that out from the beginning of the series, and why I assumed viewers would somehow know this I have no idea. But thanks for this new offering and I can tell you he's included. A real discovery for me and he will make an ideal subject down the line. No idea when he will appear - there are still hundreds waiting their turn. but I mix them up for balance so he may well feature sooner rather than later. Thanks again.

    When do we see the Peter Beard unsung illustrator video?

      @petebeard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi again, and I've no plans to detail the ups and (more) downs of my own career, but there is already a video on the channel of some of my work from when I was still earning a living from pictures. Pete Beard portfolio will take you to a brief compilation.

    Hi Pete,
    Just wondering if you have done a video on Norman Thelwell. I've had a search through but can't find one. I'm trying to find out more about his work/method etc. I'm an aspiring illustrator who loves Thelwell's work.
    Thanks very much.

      Hello and I'm fairly sure I mentioned him briefly in my British illustration in the 1950s video, but it was insultingly brief. He is one of my favourite illustrators and one of the reasons I wanted to be a humorous illustrator in the first place. Unfortunately he was born too late to qualify for the unsung heroes series (1910 is my cutoff point). That might seem arbitrary but I had to stop myself somewhere. As it is I'll be lucky to live long enough to finish the series. But with this prompting from you I will explore whether I can get enough information and visual material to justify a solo video about him.

      @@petebeard Hi Pete, thanks very much for replying.
      I didn't realise the series was only going up to 1910. But I am grateful you are making them. As I am planning on entering the industry, it is very useful to me to understand more about its history. I'm sure I would have hundreds of questions for you about the industry and its practice. No doubt it has changed a lot in recent decades. And as for living long enough - I hope you are well.
      Very best wishes,
      Adam

      @@adamthorntonillustration9281 Hello again, and I didn't mean to indicate my days are numbered - at least I hope not. But I recently turned 70 so I'm well aware of the ticking of the celestial clock. And yes the world of illustration is fairly unrecognisable from how it was when I first entered the profession in 1973. But despite my officially retired status I do still create the occasional picture. Feel free to ask questions about what you might expect in the shark tank. Not sure about 'hundreds' but if I can be of any help I'd be glad to do so.

      @@petebeard Thanks again, Pete. That is very kind of you to offer to help.
      I did wonder whether you were hinting that you're unwell or something, so thank you for clarifying. I was actually born in 1973! So am seeking to enter the industry a bit later in life, perhaps after having quite a life so far.
      I guess the main questions I have about the industry would revolve around something I hear Holly Exley (an illustrator who posts quite candid videos on TH-cam) says about how illustrators are being valued less and less as the years go on. Holly believes it's partly to do with illustrators undervaluing themselves and accepting too little fee for their skills, thus pushing fees down quite considerably. While I am certainly not in it for the money (and am planning on being a children's book illustrator, which Holly does not do, although we would both be freelance), I am hoping that it will be a viable profession.
      One more question would be if you feel it is important to keep up with the current fashion in style. While I do only paint digitally, I'm seeing a lot of illustrators these days in the very clean digital style of Ross Tran (from Ross Draws), whereas my inspiration and the syle I am seeking lies with Marco Bucci and his green monster illustrations.
      Do you have any comment on either of these issues?
      Thanks very much again.

    What Programme/App do you use for your Videos, Pete?

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Tony and I'll try to keep this as brief as I can.
      The images are either scanned from books or downloaded from the web and formtted/cleaned up and all the rest using Affinity photo. They are then dragged into imovie (I'm on a mac) where all the transitions, framings and camera moves are done. The sound track and vocals are recorded in garageband and that's dragged into the imovie timeline so it can all be synchronised. I hope that's helpful.
