He is somewhat famous in Sweden where I live. He illustrated several anthologies with fairy tales for children. Great that more people are learning about his genius! He did a suite of illustrations depicting the apocolypse of Norse mythology called Ragnarøk that I was lucky enough to get my hands on about a year ago, recommend any illustration fan to check it out if you get the chance.

I began watching through this series last month, and I've taken to watching/listening to the series while working on assignments for a Graphic Design degree. I've watched them through to this point, and I am going to continue the entire way through and beyond. I want to tell you that as an aspiring Illustrator myself, these stories are all fascinating and inspiring. I returned to school as I entered my thirties after working in customer service for over a decade, and to this moment frequently find myself feeling like it's too late to really ever do what I love. Your videos in general, and especially this series in which you walk us through case, after case, after case of successfull artists from myriad of backgrounds, inspires and motivates me to keep drawing. Thank you!

Hello and thanks so much for your generous comments about the impact the channel has had on you. In terms of your possible future as an illustrator, in my experience teaching the subject (and my own professional experience as an illustrator) I can confidently state that those who succeed in this very precarious business are the ones who do not give up. Many people think being able to draw well is the most important thing but it really isn't. It's the determination to succeed and ability to persevere in the fae of the inevitable obstacles. I wish you the very best of luck. And look at it this way, you can always fall back on being a graphic designer in the short term. That's what I did in the early days and it's much easier to get a job in that area.

The work of Moe is quite entrancing,
    His charming pictures were enhancing
    Books, which he did illustrate,
    As one can now appreciate.
The Gibson Girls, demure and pretty,
    Like phantasies of Walter Mitty,
    Graced covers of some magazines,
    Regally, like fairy queens.
Reynolds (the younger, so to speak)
Delights, when one does take a peek
At Punch, where he did poke some fun
At war and at the German hun.
    Love’s strange phases - illustrated

    Delicate drawings, advertising,
And other things, some quite surprising.

  • @lukewalton6057
    @lukewalton6057 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Clichéd perhaps, but just when I think undiscovered gems are depleted you prove me wrong with another magnificent entry! Louis Moe was unknown to me--but his influence is very apparent, (though unacknowledged) in his heroic visions like the one at the 1:29 mark, where the worm's-eye view of the hero vanquishing his enemies has been (subconsciously?) cribbed by too many sword and sorcery artists in later decades to mention.
I normally would not have thought of Charles Dana Gibson as "unsung", but then I realized that I'm, well, old, and indeed, many younger artists have never been adequately introduced to his superlative pencraft. I humbly suggest that a comparable deeper look at Joseph Clement Coll might be considered in an upcoming episode.
Frank Reynolds was known to me in a very superficial way, but what an incredible overview of this man's towering skill! The brief sample of his sequential work convinces me he was also influential in the later European style of comic art, with its emphasis on elegant line and translucent shades, rather than the murkier toned or brashly colored fare more commonly found state-side.
Clara Elsene Peck was completely new to me and what a discovery! Her decorative, Art Nouveau-meets-Brandywine-tradition style is deceptively familiar, yet the approach to figures, lettering and expressions are uniquely hers. I dug around and was not surprised to read that she and her then-husband were associated with Harvey Dunn's (one of Pyle's pre-eminent pupils) illustration school in an artist's colony in Leonia, New Jersey. Sorry to ramble. Your joyous lessons are one of my greatest pleasures. Excellent choices, and your narration, as always, takes us on new journeys while instructing us effortlessly.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hello to you and particular thanks for your considered observations. That Moe image struck me in the same way it did you, and I think that cinematic approach to composition has been crucial in fantasy art. I had never heard of him until about a year ago. And I know there are some in the series who older viewers don't consider unsung, but you're right - I'm mindful that there are generations behind the likes of you and me who are fairly ignorant of the past.

Hello and it's very pleasing to know that you appreciate the channel. Regarding Patreon I really wouldn't be comfortable asking people to hand over money. I'm not rich but I really don't need it, and responses such as yours are all the reward I need from this. It really doesn't feel like work to me.

I doubt you would be interested in doing anything about underground punk and metal posters and the like, but having come from that background, it is something at least this person would enjoy, and I am sure would attract the eye of other lovers of the chaotic freeform style and what influences it might have had outside the medium, such as its impact on the movies, like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, or the stream of low budget movies in the 70's, and vice versa.

Hello again and there is one (one of the first I made) about the graphics of the second half of the suxties. So it isn't just posters, but they are covered. And I'm currently working in a video devoted to Rick Griffin which will be up in a few weeks. Anyway the one that's up - and for some baffling reason it's one of the least viewed on the channel - is called Purple Haze - Psychedelic Era Illustration. It doesn't get into other aspects of pop culture such as films but maybe you'll enjoy it anyway.

@@petebeard Yeah, I'm just getting to that now. Right after I posted that comment, I saw a video where you gave a brief, but respectful nod to the punk and metal posters I spoke of, or rather showed a couple of the very best of them. I will enjoy any content you do on that genre. Though I do enjoy all your content.

Thanks a lot for all these delightful presentations! I enjoyed each one of them! I watched all the episodes in little more than one week...and discovered many many illustrators that I didn’t knew( the majority of them...) I am glad that you mentioned Kupka’s illustrations, I was impatient to see if you would do so. There is an illustrator that I like a lot but I don’t know much about him other than that he was born in Italy(?)in the 1930’s to Hungarian parents as his name suggest to me: Pintér Ferenc. Do you know him and do you think he could fit in one of your future episodes? Thanks again for your great work!

Hello to you and thanks a lot for your generous positive response to the channel. I'm glad you find it rewarding. I know and like Pinter's work but sadly he was born too late to qualify for the unsung series. My cut off date of birth is 1910. And even with that I've still got over 200 more illustrators to cover. And at my age I might not finish them.

What's the name of that Mr. Punch illustration at 8:45? I can't find it on Google.

Hello and as far as I know it doesn't have a name I can't remember where it came from but if googling Frank Reynolds doesn't find it try the Punch cartoon archive and enter his name.

Love your videos. Should you ever update this one please use the Frank Reynolds plate of David meeting Dora from his David Copperfield at gerd.smugmug.com/BookArt/Frank-Reynolds/i-f7LvtcZ/A He illustrated 3 editions of Dickens and the original watercolours on paper are small and beautiful - roughly A4. I have seen many go through the rooms since the 1960's but have never managed to buy one - sadly. A collection of 14 of them owned by the whiskey distillers were published in 1935 as a promotional gift: THE BUCHANAN PORTFOLIO OF CHARACTERS FROM DICKENS, Glasgow and London, J Buchanan & Co [1935]. I managed to obtain a near mint copy and the plates are large and wonderful to look at.

Hello and thanks a lot for your appreciative comment. It's a funny thing but I've been an admirer of Reynold's work for the best part of half a century and I thought he would attract more than usual favourable comment. But yours is the only one so far. In a fair world his originals would be on display in the non-existent Museum of British Illustration. Thanks again and I'll check out the link.

Hello again. I'm afraid not. I detest both facebook and twitter and particularly the zombies who own them. I only tolerate youtube because it gives me a platform. But I'm genuinely sorry if that means I'm missing something of interest from you.

@@petebeardPerhaps you can visit my page again? It was an original issue of 'The Studio', winter number A.D. 1900-1901 'Modern Pen Drawings: European and American' listing Artists British, American, French, German, Belgian, Danish, Dutch, Finnish & Swiss with some artwork either been made expressly for this publication or appearing for the first time. You have possibly covered all these artists. On a personal note I have been a keen fan of the 'Punch Magazine' and have a reasonable collection, my favorites being the '30s. Keep up the excellent work...Thank you

Hello again Peter. I would very much like to be able to see the work you mention. It seems there's always another illustrator who has got under the radar. But other than making pictures, music and videos I'm clueless. Do you mean your facebook page? If so as I'm not registered I can't get in there. Or is there another page you refer to? Please advise...

How can you put Gibson as 'unknown'? The term 'Gibson Girl' is still a byword.

I didn't. I said 'unsung'. And you are speaking as an American about an American illustrator and a purely American phenomenon. The channel is for the whole world. p.s. Try asking an American teenager what the name means.

Hey Pete, fellow artist here (mostly collage). If you're interested in doing a video on modern illustrators, particularly some very popular folk artists that have taken over children's books and female magazines in the last 5 years, I'll be happy to point you to the most successful bunch.

Hello and thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately the present is something I steer clear of in my videos. I'll leave the present to others to examine. But it sounds like a good idea for someone.
